I think the new IP is going to be a shooter (third person) or Andromeda will be getting a gameplay boost for guns.

As someone who plays and enjoys all classes, but prefers shooting I like the sound of this.

As a Senior Gameplay Designer you will:

  • Work with a team of gameplay designers and design leadership through all stages of development to own and implement large systems and gameplay features that improve content and functionality of the game.
  • Set and maintain the gold standard for 3rd person shooting and cover mechanics.
  • Set the gold standard for controller input and camera movement and by constantly tuning and proactively chasing down tasks needed for improvement.
  • Tune and maintain game systems that involve physical impact reactions against characters using AI driven behaviors.
  • Collaborate with other key stakeholders to identify and implement the priorities and objectives.
  • Be proactive in communicating progress and resolution of problems
  • Create documentation and prototypes for specific and exploratory game systems.

The next great BioWare Senior Gameplay Designer also needs:

This is nothing. It's corporate ra-ra jargon. Why would the Mass Effect team be looking for people for the new IP? Why wouldn't the Mass Effect team want to make the best game they can?

This application is pretty standard when it comes to AAA studios. It's also a general application for all three of BioWare's studios (Edmonton, Montreal, Austin). The only IP BioWare currently has that's a 3rd person shooter with cover mechanics is Mass Effect (unless the new IP goes a similar direction, which I doubt). I wouldn't get your hopes up too much as this role is just senior management. He/She actually wouldn't be implementing or improving the gameplay in any meaningful way. This job is to just make sure the gameplay department is remaining productive and providing quality results.

If there is one thing the gaming industry desperately needs, it is more third person shooters.

Vacancy advertisements are just placeholders or there because of redtape. They'll talk to whoever they want for the job or they probably have someone in mind.

I hope you're being serious.  Because this is actually true.  I would like an actual Third Person Shooter too and not Over The Shoulder.  I would say TPS is the smallest represented genre.  FPS being the most ran into the ground and RPGs taking the #2 spot for saturation.  Sports/fighting games taking 3rd.

Shooter? It doesn't need to be true, because I had a concept art job interview recently and I remember something about dark fantasy rpg in the career description, but during the interview it turned out that the concept side of that project is done/on hold and they're looking for people to work on something completely new.

I'm talking about Shooters in general here.

But let's see
The Division
Fallout 4 (idc what anyone says, it's a shooter. Also, I play it in 3rd Person)
Quantum Break
Lego Jurassic World*
Crackdown
GTA
Just Cause
Hitman
Battlefront
And so on...

I know that some of these may be arguable depending on perspective (ha!) but that's just a few in my own opinion.

Should have put a star beside Battefront too.  I think a game that offers BOTH views is a good thing (Including Fallout).  I hope to see this happen more moving forward.

I wouldn't call GTA a shooter. Especially because when you do shoot its a lame auto lock system.  GTA is action/adventure with times you happen to shoot stuff.  It's like calling GTA a driving game.

Hardly any of these are actually shooters. Calling GTA a shooter is like calling Lawrence of Arabia "a fun romp." Quantum Break isn't even out yet. Crackdown and Just Cause are shooters like Battlefront is a deep, content-rich game for the ages. Uncharted is an action-platformer with occasional shooting. And Tomb Raider is just not a shooter, in any way, shape or form.

I think they need people who are better with gameplay and combat design as well,
because BioWare obviously is really weak at those two components that are important to any game.

I think combat has typically been a strength of BioWare's. Their pause-and-play combat is industry leading.

Trust me it's not their combat design is so sub par, cheap, and primitive. Look @ Ubisoft for instance, their combat design is far superior than BW look @ Assassin's Creed series & Splinter Cell: Blacklist and even TW3 combat system makes Skyrim and Dragon Age series primitive in comparison. If their combat design is their strength they'll either outmatch or equal to devs who are excellent with combat.

I can't stand Ubisoft.  I think they release the most broken and unfinished games in the entire industry.  I play ACIV, but after that game I have never bought any of their titles.  I absolutely agree with Phantom though.  It's true.

Depends on what you're after - I prefer TWs twitchy hack 'n' slash style combat to the pause-able combat in NWN or DA ... but I wouldn't want to manage an entire party with TWs system. You can't really compare the mechanics BioWare use to manage a party in combat with AC or TW - a better comparison would be Pillars of Eternity or Divinity: Original Sin... and they're more similar.
