You know what? I'm just going to say it, even though I know it will never happen. I want to breed my own mounts. There.

I hope that will never happen.

To be honest, if they can't make it so that we can have banter whilst travelling per mount, then I'd rather they spend their resources elsewhere.

That's a deal breaker for me regarding mounts. If it stops me from hearing banter, then I won't use it. I don't even use them in the Hissing Wastes cus that was where I was trying out some new party configurations and wanted to hear the banter.

Yeah horses don't match the design of the game, the companions banter, but also the sophisticated areas design, and the good exploration tricks designs, and more. I don't think horses can match if they are in DA4 the reason will probably be to be in features list not to be a good gameplay element well integrated to the game. And please no Mount&Blade I gave up try learn the complex controls.

I don't use the mounts, I'd rather have the banter.

Fist add artifact gathering for artifacts that can be collected, sold or, broken down into useful crafting materials. Second, isolate mobs to OFF the trails so that there are primary roads or trails through each region that you can ride and know you won't be attacked. Third, make mounts earn- able by completing special quests or completing a zone more than they are now and, make premium mounts purchasable as DLC.

Finally give the whole party mounts, it is possible for a mounted group of even as many as 100 riders ride together in a video game, getting 3 NPCs to do so cannot be that difficult. Now we could have banter while mounted and, be free of attacks while getting form one place to another.

As for fast travel, two or three for large zones, portals would suffice if mounts were actually useful. We would not need so much fast travel since we could quickly ride form camp to camp.

Hinterlands need a portal in Red Cliff and one where the Forest Camp is. Storm Coast just one at the Hessarian camp. Hissing wasts needs 3, Wesern Apprach two, one inside and one outside the gates., etc...

Mostly, mounts need to be faster than walking, and the areas would need to be big enough where the missing banter would be a small price to pay to get across the area.

It's an MMO mechanic, not a traditional RPG mechanic, and it doesn't work as well where areas are more visually dense or packed with banter/resources.

I never use mounts the areas are not that big anyway and i would really miss the party banter ( although my companions do not speak much anyway ) and i have to get of my horse every time i want to pick up stuff and fight enemies really irritating. I only do that quest thing in the Hinterlands and that is the only time i spent on a horseback or another rideable animal.

Let my companions either ride thier own mounts, or try and run to keep up. I don't like missing out on potential banter time every time I have to ride.

Allow mounts to act as storage in some form or fashion. They don't have to have alot of space, but a little bit of reason to summon it would be nice. They have packs.

Companion/ambient dialogue responding to either my being on the mount, or the mount itself. "Is that a....horse with a sword in its head?!" "Ah, a dracolisk....never much cared for them myself."

Maybe a bit of mount customization? I know some people like summoning what they have customized.

Have them run faster and allow party banter and companion comments to play while mounted.

Otherwise, they don't move fast enough to warrant missing out on your companions' dialogue.

Adding mounts for all party members would be the ideal for including banter and...well, realism. My party vanishing into puffs of smoke is off-putting, to say the least. Also, allowing your mount to carry items in its saddlebags would be useful, as well as, being able to outrun enemies (or just...being faster in general). I don't like having to ditch my horse just because a group of Venatori or what-have-you decided it would be a nice day to heck up my party.

That being said, I feel as if mounts would be more useful if the world were larger. Many areas are not well-equipped to handle mounts (e.g. too rocky, too cliff-y, etc.) like Emprise du Lion, and also not large enough to make it worth the player's while to get on a horse or a nug to shave maybe a minute or two off of travel time.

I don't really use the mount that much if I am honest but having said that, I think it works out alright.

For me, I don't ever fast travel, so occasionally whilst backtracking or what have you it's quite useful to use a mount instead. I think it's good addition, again it's not like you HAVE to use one.

Let mounts get you to places you can't get to otherwise.  This would rankle a whole bunch of people no doubt.  Tough!

The thing about having mounts is that they demand an awful lot of work to feel fun to use, to have the necessary levels of mobility and agility to not frustrate players in combat, and you have to make sure they can accomodate all play styles without it looking silly.

Which is complicated enough quite frankly (as in Fromsoft have never tried to do it in their Soulsborne games for example and the RPGs which do have never really made it work as anything beyond a mode of transportation that frankly is completely pointless with the existence of Fast Travel). Add in the problems of having to have your party around and the chaos that could ensue (log jams, inconsistent pathfinding etc which whilst already present would be magnified the bigger the mount is). Also, many characters simply don;t suit riding about on mounts, and would would look very awkward on them and possibly quite silly fighting from them.

And of course all this on a mechanic would would only apply to outdoor locations. So basically, forget mounts - its a lot of hassle for something the game doesn't need. Most RPGs big enough and open world enough to require mounts to at least be mentioned, usually do so in a fairly grudging, 'We included these because they needed to exist - feel free to look at them once and forget they ever existed' kind of way. Only RPGs where you play as a single character or the combat takes place in a seperate battle screen (like JRPGs for example) have any real truck with this.

Horses were totally useful in DAI. You could use them to drop down cliffs without taking damage.

Kidding.

But that was the main problem. With only some exceptions, environments were mostly vertical and busy, so it was easier to maneuver corners on foot. And the spaces where horses would be useful, like the Hissing Wastes, it still seemed to take forever to get anywhere.

So, yeah, make them faster to traverse bigger, less cluttered spaces.

You know what, I would be totally fine with mounts becoming nothing more than cutscene dressing.  I just really don't want them to vanish from the world completely.

I'd be good with this, too.

Seven things to improve mounts in Dragon Age:

  • Make then faster
  • Make mount/dismount quicker
  • Have a charge mechanic which can knock back/stagger enemies
  • Make mounts more customisable - let players be able pick/unlock/buy different skins, saddles, and armors
  • Have mounts have their own inventory
  • Have some super rare mounts that drop from bosses/obtained through a difficult achievement
  • Flying mounts?

One thing that could guarantee players would use them is if all companions also had mounts, and then there were banters which only occurred when on horseback. E.g. sera has never ridden a horse before and Vivienne mocks her for clinging for dear life to the saddle. Or Varric talks about how it's not right for a dwarf to be seated on a nuggalope and look even smaller in comparison.

I think they should get rid of mounts in future, unless they are used in cinematics, as they really don't work in a party based system.
Smaller areas to be traversed by foot please, which would likely help with complaints of empty areas filled with fetch.

My thoughts exactly....

And unfortunately, I love mounts. But it's mostly the party based gameplay that works against it.

Games like TES are more suited to all the quiet exploration and meandering around... often at a slower, investigative sort of pace. And mounts can fit into that.

I dunno, in both the DA and TES franchise I tend to walk everywhere because the mounts are often more trouble than they were worth. DAI at least has sturdier ones than the ridiculously fragile mounts in Skyrim though, so that's one point in their favour.

But yeah, most of my time in DAI and Skyrim was spent abusing the Fade Step and Whirlwind Sprint ability when travelling across country, the latter especially since I was so frequently over-encumbered by looting everything in sight. Since you cannot be over-encumbered in DA unlike in TES, it makes requiring a mount less useful because you don't need that option to help you get to somewhere to unload or sell your gear.

I do like the idea some have suggested to have the mounts serve as ad hoc storage and pack mules, as it would be useful to be able to summon a travelling storage chest if we hit our carry limit in the field. Perhaps we could upgrade the storage capacity of our mounts, or have certain mounts (such as Brontos) with larger storage but reduced speed, when compared to other mounts (such as horses) who can carry less but move faster?

I'd rather see them make the party camps more useful, somewhere you can speak to companions, restock and have an actual story-based function. Sort of similar to the home bases they had in DA2, as well as how in Descent, the first two camps were locations you helped the Legion take back control over. The Keeps were obviously meant to have been this in DAI, based on what the devs have said and the early PAX demo footage that implied both missions and customisation, but they had to cut it from the final game.

Mounts are cool, but I'd rather they'd improve the campsites instead.

I use mounts all the time TW3 - great way to travel through areas that I have already explored.

The problem with mounts in DA:I is that they feel slow and sluggish. The controller use on the PS4 is awkward,... feels heavy and it feels like I might break the controller by pressing too hard....

fix the speed and fluidity and find a different controller option and tada!...

1. I want to be able to name them. (My nuggalope will always be Ser Nuggington, Arl of Nugsleigh in my heart.)

2. As others have said, we should be able to harvest resources and listen to companion banter while riding.

3. They could go a little faster.

I think the system needs a little refinement, but I hope they don't get rid of it. Galumphing through the Hissing Wastes on the back of Tiddles Majoris was one of the joys of the game for me.

My purple halla moose thing with the stripy butt is called Pinky :P

Making them feel faster than riding a segway would be a good start. Yes, I'm looking at you, Inquisition.

I'm sure it's hard to do, but in stead of having companions disappear in a puff of smoke it would be nice to have them riding along. That way we won't have our immersion broken or miss out on precious banter.

They're useful as they are. I'm not hard to please when it comes to mounts since I only use them to travel in boring places and at times when I feel the need to run the enemy over. I just wish the enemies would take damage when they get run over.

Have them move faster and allow party banter. Have I said that yet? It's true. I'd use them if they did that.

I like all these suggestions a lot, although I think flying mounts is probably out of the question because that would add an entire new element to the design that would have to be accommodated and shaped around, and unless they wanted to make the mounts mechanic essential to the game, probably wouldn't be worth the effort.  It would be cool though if there was maybe one mission concerning the Grey Wardens that took place in a special story level where we had to temporarily control a griffon!
