According to press start com au David Gaider released an interview at Q&A at GX Australia some days ago where he revealed and discussed details of the cancelled expansion for Dragon Age 2.

David Gaider revealed that it would have ended with Varric's death. According to him the project was deleted because they needed all the resources for Inquisition.

Other details he revelaed:

Just a little bit of the material of the expansion was reworked into Inquisition because it was entirely focused on Hawke so they had to scrap allmost everything for Inquisition.

His last revelation was about the size of DA:I which in their original plans was more or less the double than the final content

Is it odd that I still wish they had gone through with Exalted March? Losing Varric would have been one of those legendarily agonizing RPG moments, and it would have been a nice capper to the Hawke story.

Oh no I don't find it odd at all. I still hold a grudge against them for the cancellation of Exalted March (and against all that caused it) I really wish they could have gone with the story they had in mind no matter what. Sadly it was impossibile because of  marketing/budget/whatever reason...

And I still wonder how Inquisition story would have been if they could have properly finished Hawke's story in the previous installation.

I'm more sad for the fact that the exalted march was deleted rather than this Varric death option included in it.
It would have made DA2 a better game  because the well of sorrow and the Mythal temple were completely out of place in the DAI main plot.

Varric is one of my favorite alltime companions and I still would have loved to play Exalted March. So I don't think it's odd

Just remember, kids: if Varric died, we would've never gotten the chance to read All This **** Is Weird.

I'm glad they didn't kill Varric! I like him very much in Inquisition and especially Trespasser DLC.

I would be more than okay with this trade off.

Heck, if it went through, then the events of Trespasser might have been the mid point of DAI and the rest of the content being reserved for DA4 been included.

Well, I think becoming Viscount essentially eliminates him as a playable character, thus lowering the chance he will be killed off for drama.

He'll die of natural causes someday, of course.

I vaguely remember reading the expansion was supposed to end badly for Hawke and co , meaning a few companions death.

I'm not sure who thought this was a good idea.I'm not against companions dying , but come on Hawke already lost half his familly to violent death , then his friends die , just go ahead and kill the mabari while you're at it.

A bit too much tragedy .

Funny how things just changed completly with the Inqui , you had to wait for a DLC to get some drama.

Hopefully now people will stop complaining about how much they wish they'd made that DA2 expansion.

I wouldn't be surprised if the ending was intended to help narrow down the world state options for the next game, after the controversy with Leliana's resurrection and fans clamoring for the HOF's return.

I'm both happy and sad it didn't happen. I can headcanon a happy ending for Hawke (less so now with their appearance in DAI), but I also don't get any resolution to the story. And Hawke's story really is one of tragedy, so it would have been fitting if the end of their story was more tragedy. I don't know if it would have been well received after the rail road plot to tragedy station in the main game, though.

I feel fairly certain that besides Varric, the surviving sibling (if they still were alive at the end of the game) and Anders would also die by the end of the DLC. Since those characters are only conditionally alive, it would be easier to canonically make them all dead so Bioware doesn't need to maintain multiple world states.

I like to think that Anders could have either had his redemption or final step into the abyss in the DLC. He could have lost all humanity and had to be fought as a boss or else come to regret his actions and seek to make amends through sacrifice. His story feels unfinished as it is.

I mean, cut content is the norm, isn't it?

Yes, but not usually half the plot.

I would have loved to have been a fly on the wall for that meeting.

I've always liked this from BioWare's wall o' wisdom...

Yes, but not usually half the plot.

I really wish I could pop in on the universe where Exalted March wasn't cancelled and Inquisition got all the plot that was initially planned...

I seem to remember him saying in a different interview that the scope was originally twice as big, but the depth was much more superficial because the total resources able to be devoted to the game was the same. So twice the plot, half the depth. And since Inquisition already seems... not as deep as most would prefer, the smaller scope is incredibly beneficial.

That would've been excellent. Varric dead. Maybe him being dead, Harding might've been a companion in DAI and have another dwarf play the scout. hahahaha

So we could have had a Dragon Age: Inquisition without Varric? That would have been great.
