When is the best time to do this one?  I know that a lot of people do this after the Suicide Mission for story purposes, but doing it earlier can help build up your character.  Is there any consensus on when to do this mission?

You realise you can just google it right?  No need for new threads for every question.....

I like to do it early so I can keep going back to the base later on in the game and explore some of it's contents, others like to do it after the SM.  It's really personal choice.  :)

Do it after TIM deceives you on the Collector Ship. Explain it away to yourself that it's an attempt by Shepard to get alternate means of information.

ArcadiaGray,  I know I could and I do, but I wanted to get some opinions from the community here.  I have found everyone here to be super helpful and friendly and I value their input.

If I do decide to play it, its usually  before the collector ship mission

I typically play it after the Disabled Collector Ship (DCS). I play the DCS as soon as possible to get my bonus weapon for as long as possible. Then I play Lair of the Shadow Broker so I can get access to the squadmate power reset terminal (so I can respec squadmates) and for the extra weapon damage upgrades you can get.

Note that the "do it after" part of LotSB is the part where you can invite Liara back to your cabin. You do not have to do that immediately after completing the main LotSB missions. Rather, after completing LotSB, you can talk to Liara (you have to manually go up and speak with her). and after the conversation she will say it would be nice to go back to the Normandy with you for a bit. You have three choices: go up right away, tell her to come up the next time you drop by to speak to her, or reject her.

In the Normandy meet-up with Liara, there are differences between whether you completed the suicide mission or have not done it yet.

If you wait until after, she will comment about how you were successful in your mission; if people died during the mission Shepard can tell her that it was not much of a victory since they lost people. If you are in a romance with an ME2 squadmate, she will ask if you are fighting for him/her (you can say yes). If you are in a romance with Liara since ME1 you can have a somewhat tender moment with Liara... unless you are cheating on her with an ME2 squadmate in which case she will get a little angry.

If you do the Normandy meet-up before, Liara will instead comment on Horizon. If you romanced Liara in ME2, you will not share a moment with her (not sure if she will get mad if you locked in a ME2 romance to cheat on her; probably?). She asks you about your mission to stop the Collectors.

So i like to do the Lair of the Shadow Broker missions early, typically right after the Disabled Collector Ship, but I usually hold off meeting with Liara aboard the Normandy until after I have completed the suicide mission.

I hope that answers your questions.

Thank you.  Very helpful.  I am just starting Thane recruitment mission and that should trigger the collector ship.  I think I will do part one of the Shadow Broker and then the loyalty missions.  I will see her after the SM.

I usually do it as one of the five missions between Horizon and the Collector Ship, along with the other missions on Illium, and one (or two) others.  It gives a lot of credits, which enables me to buy the better upgrades on Ilium before the Collector Ship mission.  It also gives a substantial amount of XP, so I can make my Shep stronger.  I also have a chance at a pretty decent upgrade from the Deliveries Terminal.  Beyond that, if I'm feeling cheesy, I can get 6 missions in during that 5-mission space just by working the order of the missions on Illium.

I was trying to get the extra mission.  If I don't get the Collector ship next I may try Miranda's loyalty mission.  I did the Anomalous Weather Detected N7 mission after Horizon, recruited Tali and I have been parked at Illium doing all those missions.  If assignments are counted as missions for the Collector ship countdown then I am way beyond 5.  It's a shame the completion of a mission puts you back on Normandy instead of returning you to Illium.

Two things the player needs to activate the collector ship mission.

1) 8 squadmates have to be recruited

2) 5 missions completed after Horizon. Its possible to complete 6 missions before the collector ship.

The trick to getting that extra mission is to do the two together that don't put you back on your ship at the end but return you to Illium.  If you don't go back to your ship between Mission 5 and Mission 6, the game can't trigger the Collector Ship since you don't access the Galaxy Map or the QEC until after you're finished with the 6th mission.

So, if I'm doing this, my sequence after Horizon could look like this:

Recruit Tali

Jacob Loyalty

Recruit Thane

LOTSB

Miranda Loyalty (#5a) - returns you to Eternity Bar on Illium - then without leaving Illium

Recruit Samara (#5b)

Of course, you can sub in other missions for 1 through 4.  However, I'm careful not to do Jack's loyalty mission until after the Collector Ship, since that would put me back on the Normandy after Miranda's loyalty mission rather than returning me to the bar on Illium.  The little quests on Illium (e.g. Hacking Terminals for Liara) don't count as missions.  You can also visit Omega and the Citadel to shop or do any unfinished quests there (e.g. The Patriarch) without adding to the mission count.

You can also do this by doing both Tuchanka loyalty missions at #5a and #5b, but this requires activating Grunt right away so he tells you about his loyalty quest in time.  You can also do it by putting together Garrus' and Thane's loyalty quests on the Citadel back to back, but you have to be careful to not activate Grunt too early and Thane's recruitment mission should be the first you undertake after Horizon so that both Garrus and Thane will tell you about their loyalty quests in time to do them as #5a and #5b.

I don't always do this cause it can work against the story arc, but doing it does yield a stronger, more resilient Shepard overall which can make surviving the Collector Ship mission a lot easier on the higher difficulties.  Even without doing the 6-mission thing though, I like doing LOTSB within that 5-mission sequence for the extra credits to buy upgrades and extra XP it provides over any other mission available (e.g. LOTSB earns over 90,000 credits (with investments); Side Missions like  Anomalous Weather average 7,500; Loyalty Missions, 30,000; and Recruitment Missions, 60,000.

If you've done more that 5 missions but still haven't recruited 8 squadmates, this will also delay the Collector Ship, but means that if you've recruited both Zaeed and Kasumi, you cannot untank Grunt (or he will be your 8th squadmate).

If you don't recruit 8 squadmates, all missions that can be done, can be done before the collector ship. I did that one time. I did all dlc's and loyalty missions before the collector ship. Once I let the Krogan out of the tank, the collector ship mission became availble

I've never had the patience to grind all the side missions before the Collector Ship. :)

To me, it is not about patience. It is about the bonus weapon I can get on the Collector Ship. Which is why I usually complete small secondary missions to unlock the Collector Ship as soon as possible. This is especially important if you plan to get the Revenant, Claymore, or Widow as a Soldier, Vanguard, or Infiltrator. Even for Adept, Sentinel, or Engineer, having access to that third weapon is pretty good, especially if you playstyle revolves around it (Assault Sentinel with shotgun comes to mind).

I think someone calculated that if you go to the Collector Ship in as few recruitment+loyalty missions as possible, you can use your bonus weapon for about 80% of the game. Some side missions do not even involve combat (like the Firewalker missions).

I hear ya.  It doesn't really bother me to do 4 or 5 recruitment and loyalty missions before the Collector Ship and I do find being able to purchase an extra Biotic or Tech Damage upgrade and an extra weapon upgrade to be quite useful at keeping me alive during the Collector Ship mission.

I should also say that  I also often use an ME2 import for an insanity run rather than an ME1 import.  ME2 imports do have the advantage of having the bonus weapon from the start... and the disadvantage of having fewer credits in the bank to start with. :)

I always used to do the LotSB after the DCS mission, but on my last few playthroughs I started to do it before the Collector ship, Mostly for the extra Upgrades, XP, Repec Terminal and credits.

That way I'm really 'buffed' to take on the Collector ship. Besides that, it's a fun DLC to play.

Thank you all for the input.  I have done the Collector ship and I will either do the LOSB or a bunch of N7 missions.  Probably I will do the LOSB.mission.  Kelly is feeding my fish.

I always do LotSB after I recruit everyone and do their loyalty missions. I see LotSB as Liara's loyalty mission, just like I see the Normandy DLC as Shepard's loyalty mission.

Well I did LOSB and it was quite interesting.  The final boss fight was tense, but I didn't die too often.  And I am playing in story mode.  I lift my glass of wine to those who beat this on hardcore and insanity.  To you noble warriors.  TOAST!!  I think it fits well where I did it.  My Shepard is totally disgusted with the Illusive Man.  I expected him to be less than honest, but he sent my crew into harms way without warning.  He is totally ends justifies the means.  It is well that I have a friendly Shadow Broker who is loyal to me.  By the way I took Tali with me so it was like old times.  Nothing beats the old crew,

Glad you enjoyed it.  It's still my favorite DLC.  If you do another playthrough (and I'm sure you will do a few), I recommend romancing Liara and then playing around with LOTSB to see how the dialogue shifts the impression you can get about her relationship with Shepard.  Do a run through where Shep is faithful, then a few where Shep is not faithful with different members of the crew.  Of course, that means doing it later in the game.  The easiest way to muck about with it is to do a playthrough up to the point where Shepard is about to lock into a romance, leaving all the romance options open right up to that point.  Then make a save, then lock in the romance and make another save (but don't overwrite the previous one).  That way, you can play LOTSB and then go back to the earlier save and lock in a different romance.

... as for getting through it on Insanity.  Thanks for the Toast :) I think though it's just a matter of, if one does anything enough times, one eventually does get a little better at it... but I still die A LOT.

From a metagaming perspective, you want to do it as soon as possible since it is the most lucrative mission in terms of upgrades, even considering it is more like two missions, each with two parts.

That said, it feels more like it should be an epilogue given that the Shadow Broker doesn't really have any bearing on the Collector plot, nor does it have anything to do with recruiting team members for the mission.

The only differences was some dialogues in the end.

I treat LotSB like Liara's loyalty quest.. so I do it before Reaper IFF since Liara wouldn't be like "you're right all along, you defeat the collectors, everyone who don't trust you are idiots ."
