reminder:
afro-texture =/= afro.
that said i want dreads too, so playing a character who isn't military/or who works for a military with less strict hair maintenance rules would be fine by me.

Considering N7 is a military organization in the Mass Effect universe, good luck with that...

yeah we'll see. so far as i know it isn't confirmed that the protag is N7 yet.

I guess these screenshots weren't enough for you:

Not exactly true. N7 is a vocational status. It's more like a rank within the organization than the organization itself.
We might be a former alliance marine, like Kai Leng (hopefully without the dishonorable discharge) who was chosen for the pathfinder program, which might have less enforced hair regulations.

N7 is a vocational code in the Systems Alliance military. The "N" designates special forces and the "7" refers to the highest level of proficiency. It applies to Alliance personnel who have graduated from the Interplanetary Combatives Training (ICT) program.
In other words, it's a military designation in a similar way to how one can become a Army Ranger or a Navy Seal.
This is all confirmed in the in-game lore, btw.

My phrasing came directly from the wikipedia article you linked. I definitely know what it says.

Then you apparently didn't understand what "vocational code" means in military terms...
Tell me, have you ever served in the military? Because, the PC in Mass Effect has always had some sort of military background. Therefore, it makes no sense for the PC in Mass Effect to have dreadlocks or an afro.

That N7 is military doesn't much matter, given that the operation in question is a colonial one. The player character could belong to any number of services, civilian or otherwise. In addition, the military organization is fictional, and does not necessarily follow the rules that you, personally, feel that it should.
And I'm curious as to which military organization it is that you believe bans the texture of African hair.
The old rules & regs might not matter anymore once the ark sets out for Andromeda. The Alliance, for any Alliance Marines aboard, might as well have ceased to exist. Andromeda is so distant that the colonists would be on their own and no longer part of whatever parent organizations they originally belonged to.
A shift in military culture wouldn't be too far fetched, given the backdrop.
During the 19th and first half of the 20th Century, U.S. Marines who had spent a long time in Asia and the Pacific were often said to have 'gone Asiatic.' They were seen as somewhat peculiar by their stateside counterparts, as they often picked up local customs during the years abroad. I believe the British military had similar experiences with their officers in India, whether or not they had a term for it. One of the Roman writers, I forget which now (probably Tacitus or Vegetius), also mentioned that Roman troops stationed in the provinces for extended periods went partially native. The Roman troops who served under Sertorius for example, often fought just the local Spanish tribesmen, using ambushes and guerrilla tactics. All those people were only cut off from higher command or their government by the weeks or months it took for word to reach them by horse, mule, or boat.
I've rambled a bit, but given how distant Andromeda is from the Milky Way, and with the colonists being completely on their own, it wouldn't be too far fetched for old customs to fall away. It wouldn't necessarily be too far-fetched that a lot of the old military regulations end up being abandoned or ignored.
so when do we get a thread asking for blonde afros with red highlights?
lol all of these damn hair threads are proof that we are starved for news. Give us something substantial to talk about bioware. Gameplay footage, show the mako in action, maybe a squadmate bio/reveal, something anything.
Because they can't change the rules in the future military?
Maybe, but that's not the question. The question is, is it sensible to have longer/larger hairstyles when one is going to be wearing an airtight helmet?
There's no objective reason our military currently prohibits dreadlocks or afros
Um, no, I already covered that. Dreadlocks and afros would prevent a tight seal if a soldier needed to put on a gas mask. If the seal is not tight, the soldier could be severely injured or possibly dead. It's basically the same concept with wearing an airtight helmet for space.
It has zero to do with culture.

We have already seen pictures of the protagonist in N7 armor, so...yeah...

This is a possibility. And if MEA is set far enough in the "future" to justify this having happened, cool. If not, then well...it'd be stupid. 3 years (or however long), where most of the crew was asleep or in suspended animation or something similar, that's not long enough. It has to be a significant time period.
She can just go bare headed with a breather mask like Jack and Liara and Miranda.

again for the record: afro-texture =/=afro.

Wow some really attractive people here...
What is it with the thread necros today? Sheesh!
This thread spawned a thought in my head. How many black people or people of afro descent play or will play this series in contrast to white people or people who dont care about afro texture hairstyles? Probably not much.

You don't need to be black to care about afro texture hairstyles. One of my biggest frustrations with ME3 was I couldn't give my blacks Shepards an afro hairstyle so I went with the shortcut
(I couldn't with the crewcut. The crewcut was fine for women in ME1 and 2 but in ME3 that cut was a no-no).

the majority of people who play this game dont find the lack of afro-texture an issue because they dont care.
