the majority of people who play this game dont find the lack of afro-texture an issue because they dont care.

This thread spawned a thought in my head. How many black people or people of afro descent play or will play this series in contrast to white people or people who dont care about afro texture hairstyles? Probably not much.

It's impossible to know, but I wouldn't assume that "not many black people" are playing Mass Effect. Some frequent posters here have identified their ethnicity as such; and I'm sure others simply haven't felt the need or relevance of doing so.

I think many people want more variety. I definitely was frustrated I couldn't easily model "black" characters. I was also frustrated, though, that most Asian ethnicities were nearly impossible. For reference, I am a 37yo white dude. I love variety, both in real life and in gaming. I can tell I'm not alone.

As creepy-weird as the BSN often is, the collective love for variety is something I share.

Dutch, I find there's often a sort of overly blunt truth to your posts. In this case, though, I think you're wrong. The "Afro hair" phenomenon is huge, right now. I doubt gamers are unaffected, beyond the general desire for variety that I already discussed above.

This topic has been discussed to death.

Still, Ryder's ponytail seems to be moving when she moved hear head. This implies either some hair physics or hair/hair style improvements. Either way, the next video should put this to rest.

Until then, I'm moving on.

Black is a beautiful color of our hair.

Tell me, have you ever served in the military? Because, the PC in Mass Effect has always had some sort of military background. Therefore, it makes no sense for the PC in Mass Effect to have dreadlocks or an afro.

Just because our current military is sorta racist and bans black hairstyles doesn't mean the future military would be, too. I highly doubt you're allowed to have pink/purple hair in the military atm either, but it was an option in me3.

Actually, the Ryder that we see at the end is wearing white, and looks like the same woman wearing white armor in an earlier clip, which shows 'AI' on her helmet. For all we know the Ark/Andromeda Initiative or whatever it's called is funded through cerberus, or something else.

"Sorta racist"? You do realize they hold everyone to the same strict guidelines? Uniformity, not racial oppression, is the goal.

Much like school dress codes, military codes seem to more heavily restrict one group over another. And while it's not just /black/ hairstyles being banned, they've literally had black women who were told they needed to relax or straighten their hair because their natural hair texture, even in a super short cut that didn't interfere in any way, wasn't allowed.

That sounds more like a case of racist ass officers/sergeants than a problem with the policy itself. It's a shame stuff like that flies, but I'd imagine the military will be the last place it gets fixed. It will likely be perceived as a minor issue in which simple compliance and "don't rock the boat" is preferable to making a big issue. Eventually, as society shifts first, institutions like the military will change as well.

The reason why they don't want us with afros or dreadlocks simply because it offends them because we embraced our nappy hair and it represents that we are proud of our culture and heritage. But they don't want us to have our hair and they feel better if women's hair were straight and men's hair cut. That is weird they are offended by our hair.

Seriously Dutch, why even bother commenting on this thread? There's nothing wrong with adding more Afro textures, variety is the spice of life.

I've seen women in the army with mini afros. They could also add more braided hairstyles to the cc- you can often see black women in the military with those.

I'm always down for more variety in CC options. Sure, why not? I don't understand the big deal that some folks are making. Let's replace a couple of those shaved headstyles with something different. It isn't like we need that many varieties of a shaved hairstyle.

Also, I'm once again chuckling at folks applying 21st century (or earlier) standards to a science-fantasy game. The writers can do whatever they want with the hair regulations. The game stopped being sci-fi when ME2 started in my opinon.

I have a question actually. Is there anything at all in the lore that statest that short hair is mandatory for military service?

We can make guesses based upon the practicality of a hair style in combat (such as having long hair unbounded could be a problem,) as well as the standards for the various militaries of today. However, unless I'm mistaken (which I very could be) there is nothing in the Codex talking about that nor have the devs said anything about it.

So I say bring on more hairstyles and textures, so long as they can keep the clipping to a bare minimum.

The suggestion that only people of a certain descent care/want Afrotexture is completely false. I'm Asian and have created several characters who I would portray to have been of African, Jamaican or other ethnicities where Afrotexture would have been lovely to have. I'm all for all type of diversity in game and all the photos here where beautiful examples!

I am certainly not up in arms about this, nor would I say I would be necessarily disappointed if they weren't included... But I would be very pleased and 100% behind their inclusion.

Seems I am far more satisfied with Bioware's CC on their non-SP games.

I agree. POC get the short end of the stick in video gaming. For what it is worth I would like to see it too.

I didn't see that particular argument rehashed in this thread, though I only skimmed and admired the pics, to be honest.

I would love to see the series return to the military science fiction vibe of ME, in lieu of the space opera we got later. (Find Chris l'Etoile. Hire him. Put him in charge of "writing Quality Control".) Still, I don't think that precludes hair styles. As long as the devs don't go crazy, bedecking Alliance officers or important dignitaries with pink or purple locks, I'm okay with those being in the CC.

But I do admit I would love it if Bioware would add better African and Longer hair styles. At this rate, their slightly better then Bethesda  ^_^

Which country's military are you referring to?

If you're referring to the United States, you couldn't be more wrong. As far as race goes, the military is probably the most successfully integrated and color blind part of the country.

Good afro texture is the hair type we've never actually had. Any color.

Hmm...I could make a character after myself if this kind of hair was in the game c;

Well...actually, the first hair texture is mine. That wouldn't be so hard to pull off, yeah?
