I would rather have the Inquisitor return for DA4

I continue to fail to see the appeal of the Inquisitor coming back as a playable protagonist.

I like the idea of having a protagonist and antagonist with a personal connection and a strong sense of betrayal. I want the story to finish with the same protagonist it started with (as David Gaider said, DA:I was only half the story), I love the idea of playing a character who has fallen from power and the missing arm gives the potential for a lot of physical and emotional struggle which would be my ideal. I want to see how the inquisitor could cope with the loss and defeat Solas despite expectations. It would also be an excuse to be able to solve problems in a variety of ways (misdirection, strategy, stealth, alliances, etc...)rather than constant brute force.

If the story had truly ended with the inquisition defeating Corypheus and having a party as it did in the base game, no Solas shennanagins, no return of the ancient elven kingdom, etc...then there would be no reason for the Inquisitor to return, their story would be over. What Trespasser did was tear everything back open and give the inquisitor personal motivation to continue.

Have Trevinter blood mages regrow his hand and be the main character in DA4 to stop Solas, don't pull another Hawke.

Here are my thoughts:

We know that half the story was cut for DA:I, and we know that they want to continue that story in the next main DA game. So it stands to reason that we will in fact get to play as the inquisitor. However, BW has a history with DA games to get a new protagonist every game; that's really the only thing I can think of as to why BW would go with a new Protagonist.

I like to have femquisitor back for the next game. I'm sure AWR would like to voice her again

If the Inquisitor romanced Solas, I feel she should be a must for DA4, but not as the hero. I think working for the Inquisition and becoming the new hero would be a lot of fun. The Inquisitor would be like Cullen, Josie or Leliana and we would update them and they would come with us when we face Solas, etc...

I had a strange feeling while studying Japanese. It must be the fact yet another thread such as this appeared.

Well, i'm with you in wanting the Inquisitor back. I just don't feel like their story was finished. Before Trespasser i couldn't have cared either way, but after it i just can reconcile a new PC with Solas' story. I feel it would be a disadvantage to it. I want the Inquisitor to come back and deal with Solas.

I think a Magister/Tevinter slave would be a better PC for a game where the major threat is not the psyco bonkers bald elf, but the psyco bonkers crazy horned dudes.

If Bioware wants a new PC every game, they REALLY need to stop using one hero's emotional entanglement as another's gimmick. Not that i don't trust them to find a way to make it work either way, but i won't buy the next game right away if the Inquisitor is not the PC. I'll have to see if others believe the choice they made was the right one.

Well, we can only wait and see. If they believe the Inquisitor should be PC in the next game for -insert comprehensive list of reasons- i will be happy. If they decide to make that-one-dude-no-one-has-ever-heard-of because of -insert comprehensive list of reasons- then fine. If they decided to have the "new guy" because "well, we did say that every game will have a new hero, so now we're kinda stuck making games that have new hero's that make absolutely no sense" i will not be impressed.

Honestly, i don't hold out much hope for the Inquisitor to come back. I have a bad feeling they will give us a new PC, reduce Solas to the trite level of Corypheus, bring in a new antagonist that is deeply intertwined with the DA4 PC then have the DA5 PC deal with part way through the game. It seems like it could become a bad habit.

They don't need to push one antagonist on to a new PC to keep the stories linked. Hawke and the Warden were still linked even though DA2 had nothing to do with the Warden's journey. The Characters, the places, the names we've heard but have no face to put with them. Those are more than enough to link the games AND let us have a new PC every time.

Ended up being a bit of a rant, but i don;t like loose ends. And i dislike them even more when i don;t get to solve the problem with the person who was knee deep in the problem since it started.

EDIT: And if i'm not the Inquisitor, i don't want to spend the next game working for the Inquisitor. I mean, we just spent a game doing odd jobs to a massive organisation, why go through that again?

I can't see us as a background worker, but more or less the one to spy on Solas and I can see us running into him in tight spots like with Flemeth and him helping us as we try and gather as much as we can in Tevinter while doing odd jobs, so we can find another way to fix things instead of let Solas kill everyone. We would probably live in Tevinter and end up in this whole mess by chance as always and then play a vital role in saving Thedas and maybe even seeing the other side of the story since we are now in the place that we heard nothing but bad things about mostly.

Yep I really don't the new protagonist working for inquisitor or any remnants of the foul inquisition structure.

Pass. I spent enough time with the Inquisitor that I'm willing to let them go. I'd like to try a new race and a new class, and perhaps a new romance.

My ideal solution would be dual protagonists - we spend most of our time playing as a new character, but the Inquisitor is playable in a few key scenes.

Failing that, I'd prefer a new character to playing as the Inquisitor again. I think there are more cons than pros to bringing them back.

But to work with them would still make the new PC a subordinate, which won't work since the PC's are supposed to be "the most important person in Thedas".

As well as that, most people who want a new PC also don't care about Solas, so having the next game revolve around him and a new PC would be a mistake. People will always use the "find people he doesn't know" line to try and completely detach from Inquisition. That won't happen

A final note, why would Solas listen to what a new PC has to say? If he wouldn't listen when the Inquisitor tells him there are other way, there's no way he will even flinch if someone he doesn't know smacks him in the face with the most ultra-super-perfect plan ever.

The whole "get mixed up in things by chance" doesn't always work well with the narrative. In this case, it will most likely make Solas a black and white bad guy who is trying to kill everyone. Unless you run into him at every turn, there won't be a chance to see the depth of his character that we did in Inquisition. Even seeing him in every mission will only show him as a "bad guy". Having the Inquisitor back would give the option for a much deeper conflict between PC and Antagonist

The tricky thing with Solas is he thinks nothing else can be done to fix things, but he does tell the Inquisitor he would like to be proven wrong again by them, therefore it seems we will most likely be trying to find other ways to fix things and then have to choose based on Trespasser whether we kill him or not. Solas is not a bad guy, he's just a making a very big mistake and if the Inqusitor chose to help him, and needed new allies from Tevinter, we won't be able to just kill him and judge him a bad guy. Choosing to make Solas your enemy might be the most interesting way to play it imo. Seems Bull's live or die choice is also going to play a part in DA4.

I agree with what you're saying. I don't think Solas is a bad person, per se. But he is stubborn, vain and narcissistic. But my point is that, even if the Inquisitor was crying to the new PC to save Solas from himself, the new PC would have no reason to do so. They would have no motivation, because they don't know Solas like the Inquisitor does. They don't know him like we do.

Solas cares about the Inquisitor and the friends he made in the Inquisition, but to him other people are a necessary sacrifice. He might not want to kill the Inquisitor if they came after him, and would likely talk to them and listen and converse. He would do so because of what they have been through together, to see their growth, to be proven wrong from someone he cares for and/or respects. IF he hates you, he would probably enjoy provoking you and taunting you, rubbing your futile attempts to stop him in your face. If he is in love with you, he would probably show how heart broken he is every step of the way, he may even help you and protect you sometimes.

A new PC would be nothing more than a small obstacle that he would fight against. You won't have the chance to want to save him from himself. He will just be a mad man who wants to destroy the world. That is a story in and of itself, but not nearly as exciting or enticing as it could be if the Inquisitor was back.

I would also like more of an opportunity to show how i truly saw my Inquisitor. I played her as someone who was very dutiful and caring, so she acted as a leader and a friend. I never truly got to see how she is, how she was before she became leader. I would love to see how everything she has been through has affected her, sullied her. Maybe it made her stronger, maybe it made her paranoid. Maybe she is still the kind girl she was at the start, or maybe she has gone insane. I just think the Inquisitor themselves have a lot more to offer.

I hope not.   Keeping the same protagonist means keeping the rest of their baggage along for the next game too.   I want new characters and companions.   While DA:I's characters were all interesting and believeable, most of them were not very likeable or 'iconic'.    So in other words, I won't miss them when they are gone.

I would love to be able to go against the Inquisitor and choose to kill him or however I feel my PC should view him. Or if our Inquisitor romanced him and he finds out our new PC knows the Inquisitor, his reaction is more stronger than if they were a friend or hated. Especially since Solas is so in love with the Inquisitor he haunts her dreams and nearly gave up all his plans to be with her.

I am also hoping our new PC is not directly involved, but Trespasser made many of us feel like it's not over for the Inquisition and we will be involved again solely because the Inquisitor is seeking allies.

If they returned Origin options, it would be cool to play a PC who hates what they learn of Solas and won't help the Inquisitor and ends up doing their own thing.

It would be great if based on how we played, we find out if we led well with a good rep (my Inquisitor saved everyone, helped everyone and romanced Bull) or got a bad rep for being ruthless and have become a big threat.

With a new PC, i can't help but feel the only option will be to kill him. There is really no reason why a new pc would want to save him, no matter how involved they become with the Inquisitor. And the Inquisitors feelings on the matter will be reduced to nothing, because they will just be an NPC who tells you things now and again. He will probably not show any true feelings to someone he doesn't know. Hell, he never even shows the woman he loves how much he loves her until he basically tells her he's going to kill her.

Weekes has said Solas' story is going to come to head in DA4, so a new PC will have to be directly involved with the Inquisiton and Solas no matter what. Friend or enemy, i doubt the story would change much, you'd still have to work with the Inquisitor to find out what they know. And the only way to even get a glimpse of who Solas is is to talk to the people he once called friend.

If the Inquisitor is not PC or a major character, i doubt who they were will really be mentioned. Mostly a brief mention here and there. But they will likely try to keep the last "most important person" and current "most important person" as separate as possible.

I don;t think we will see the origins again. Likely you will make up your mind on Solas during the story of the game and confront him at some point. Most likely killing him because i don't see how any middle ground will be found between two strangers.

Solas baggage is coming along for the ride regardless. But even if they did decide to bring back the Inquisitor (which is not even likely to happen) there is no reason for them to bring back anyone else other than a cameo. Even romances don't need more than a brief cameo.

I'm curious. Why the interest for the Inquisitor as a PC for DA4, other than the Solas connection/closure?

I'm curious. Why the interest for the Inquisitor as a PC for DA4, other than the Solas connection/closure?

I'm sure you'll get 100 different answers in regards to that. For me, off the top of my head:

- I think the story will be stronger due to an already established connection between Inquisitor and Solas (which you mentioned, but i think the story will benefit immensely)

- I would love to play a protagonist with an actual, physical challenge. I would love to see how they are affected by it

- More chance to characterise the Inquisitor now they are not forced to be the leader

- I don't want the previous choices (disband/keep inquisition.....kill/save Solas) to be made redundant

- I don't want the next game to be as weak as Inquisition was because of a boss that people felt "belonged" to another hero. Even though Cory was only briefly in DA2, it sort of felt like they were relying on what was established there to make us care about who he is through a hero who had nothing to do with him. Magister darkspawn monster was all i thought he was. I worry they will do the same thing with Solas, even though a new PC has no reason to care about who Solas is. They only need to worry about what he is doing.

- We now know the game was "split in half" as it were, so i think the Inquisitor should finish the story designed for them

There's a bunch more, but i can't think right now. Others will likely answer you too, soon.

I would agree too if there wasn't an option to try and save him. I know many Solasmancers will scream (me included) if we can't get the chance to at least save him from himself and not cut him down as a final boss fight. Having the option to save him might not be our PC's choice though. If we chose to redeem him, we might get a cutscene we can't affect and watch as the Inquisitor does whatever they are supposed to do to save him. I hope not tbh, but since the PC is not involved personally, it will have to be based on our Inquisitor I'd imagine. I'm not really sure how they'll pull this off since they gave the option to try and save him and he's become very beloved by his fans.

Which is why i think the Inquisitor should be PC one last time. Solas' story is going to be a big part of the next game if they don't turn him into Cory 2.0

They can't let the Inquisitor decide his fate when the character we are playing may not agree with what the Inquisitor wants. The new PC would have no reason to care about the relationship between Solas and the Inquisitor. Taking control of the Inquisitor while our current PC is in the same room would be complex and immersion breaking.

So it really comes down to new PC with no connection and thus (most likely, in my opinion) a weaker story, or Inquisitor as PC and a strong story. Even if Trespasser had been handled differently, i don;t think this would be as big an issue, but they set up the next game giving the player character a reason and motive to pursue Solas. They gave them a personal investment, and no choice to not chase him. I just can't make sense of a new PC

You spoke of one of my biggest concerns when Trespasser ended. Unlike ME where you played as Shepard through 3 games and saw their story end, we have always had a new protagonist for each DA game. If we are playing the Inquisitor again, it would break immersion and though I'm not complaining, many don't want to be the Inquisitor again. I'm starting to think DA4 will be a part 2 of DAI and DA5 (if made) will be a new start with a new character, unless players don't mind being a PC with no attachment to the story (I highly doubt that). Then we have to wonder how the Inquisitor can be in it as the main PC if they lost their arm and said their adventuring days we're over. Either they wrote themselves into a corner or they have some great idea planned to connect it all and satisfy every side.

I doubt this will be the case. Aside from the new PC route for each new game, not everyone is invested nor interested with the Solas arc. Also, you will need to consider that Bioware may want to attract another set of new players/gamers. Thus, the baggage that was dealt with in DAI may confuse them even more.

I do think the Inquisitor will make an appearance (similar to Hawke) as an NPC. The only ones who want the Inquisitor back are the Solasmancers.

Trespasser gave out mixed signals. I take it as a sign that they are keeping their option open. And the arm is not as big a deal as people are making it out to be. I think that having a prosthetic arm that can be used to buff the Inquisitor would be really cool.

And it's very true that not everyone was invested in the Inquisitor or Solas, but that doesn't take away the fact Solas is going to be in the next game. Love it or hate it, it's there. I'm not in love with my Inquisitor, but i AM in love with the story that could be told with the Inquisitor and Solas.

But not every side will be satisfied. Those who don;t want to play the Inquisitor will not be happy of they are back, and those who do will not be happy with a no name newbie who takes their place.

If they really want to invite new players, they really need to stop passing character baggage from one PC to the next. New players won;t know who Solas is and i don;t see why the story should suffer because people didn't bother to play inquisition. Again, we have been told that Solas' story is in the next game, so invested or not it's there. New players will be confused regardless, since the next game is very likely going to be the second half of what was planned for Inquisition. Or at least a great deal of that content will be in there.

That is entirely untrue. There are many who want the Inquisitor to deal with Solas because that's what the Inquisitor said they would do. It's not just people who romanced Solas. And i've not spoken to anyone who loved the Hawke cameo. Most can't even say the liked it. Why make the same mistake twice?

An artificial replacement for the lost limb is not only cool, but makes sense (given that they are a very well-connected individual with access to a genius arcanist among others) and would justify the Inquisitor starting back at level 1 as they have to learn all their skills back. Replace the Mark powers with abilities based on the arm if it is some sort of technomagical thingading.

I think Bioware were keeping their options open when they removed the arm. So that both a new protagonist and a returning one make sense. I'm kinda hoping for a well-implemented dual protagonist idea myself.

I'd like it if the Inquisitor got some Jaime Lannister type hand. I think they removed the arm because they wanted to get rid of the mark. I honestly couldn't see anyone else deal with Solas. Besides he did say he was going to save the world again in one of the speechs.

I hope not.   Keeping the same protagonist means keeping the rest of their baggage along for the next game too.   I want new characters and companions.   While DA:I's characters were all interesting and believeable, most of them were not very likeable or 'iconic'.    So in other words, I won't miss them when they are gone.

The baggage is being carried over regardless, however it makes for a much better story for someone to deal with their own baggage than for that baggage to be passed on to some random new person with no reason to care. Solas is carrying over as the antagonist as is his plot to tear down the veil. You can bet Dorian is coming back and there will almost certainly be returning characters as companions. Probably a parade of cameos as usual too.
