Doesn't matter. Just no DLC squadmates.
How many squadmates do you want?

7 sounds about right.
2 - Human
1 - Krogan
1 - Asari
1 - Salarian
1 - (insert milky way race)
1 - Andromedan race

Agree seven feels about right.
My main hope is that squadmates all have a nice mix of powers. I preferred DA2’s approach, where NPC’s had their own unique skill trees that the hero couldn’t have. Each squad mate had their own speciality and that helped give them personality on the battlefield as well as off it.

I'd like to see as many as possible. And if there will be expansions, few more from those.

Six squadmates (maybe seven if there's a secret character or a couple of mutually exclusive ones).
Then two or three important crewmates who are ship-based but are still well developed and contribute to the plot.
So pretty much like ME3's format, but nobody is dlc.

More the merrier I guess, I mean as long as they are still complex characters. At least 6 I think, there needs to be some variety in squad when you go to missions and there needs to be some options for romances as well. Not over 10 though, I don't think BW can write more than that well- it would easily go to what Skyrim has- tons of possible followers who have minimal content.

Nine. Five or six is too few for a BioWare game and with a larger number you have better odds of getting some squadmates you really like. Take Inquisition, for instance. Nine companions. I really like Cassandra, Dorian, Vivienne, Varric and Bull so I have lots of options. The rest I can take or leave, but every companion in the game has a large fanbase so there's something for everyone.

Agree, in me3 i found my options very limited as the squadmates i ideally wanted weren't present and i wasn't particularly fond of many of those on offer. I hate to think if that 7/8 had become a 5/6, what team i would have been left to fashion.

6-7. With none of them mandatory for missions.

I think ME2 had way too many squadmates, I'd prefer less than that.

I would rather have 5. I also feel like ME2 had too many squadmates. I want a smaller number of them so they can be much more in depth in terms of development and conversations.
Too many and it runs the risk of being watered down.
Someone earlier said it will be 7, that's 2 too many.

I agree with this. I'm betting a lot of people here who are calling for low numbers like five would change their tune if it actually turned out that none of that number actually grabs their interest.
Relatedly, the frequent assertion that more companions axiomatically means less content seems specious to me. DA:I has nine companions and all of them have a number of cutscenes, at least one quest, a variable degree of main plot entanglement, tons of non-cutscene conversations, generally strong writing and ideological positions, voluminous banter. DA:I has fifty percent more banter than DA:O, even with Shale's DLC content taken into account. By the time of its release ME:A will have been in development for more than four years. The resources are definitely there to support nine companions to the same extent as DA:I.

I hope for 7
1 male human
1 female human
1 turian m/f
1 asari
1 krogan m/f
1 salarian m/f
1 andromedan race
This seems a quite balanced squad to make ourself feel at home with the old races but introducing the new ones.
I expect that the next games will have more andromedan companions taking over a bigger chunk of the squad. Though for the first game I think BW will play safe.

For missions and assignments, never less than two.
Edit: Meaning: the PC + 1 NPC in certain scenarios.
In ME-2's Normandy SR-1 Crashed Ship DLC, I would really have liked to have Garrus and/or Tali accompany me as we toured the crash site and picked up dog tags. Dialog with them at that moment could have been priceless.
For the game, up to 6, but only if every character is given real depth in personality and has the right loadouts and powers to be really effective. I never used Jacob except for his loyalty mission. And I wish I hadn't done his loyalty mission. Miranda's skills over Jacob's, every time.

I would actually like if we could have some story missions where we could only take one companion with us. As long as we could choose who we want to take.
