After playing Trespasser as a Rift with Walk Softly on I realized what a pain in the ass it is to confront the Qunari shock troopers, who are invulnerable to to fire and ice, without a proper lightning spell.

Surely I could pound them with Stonefist but it was a boring and repetitive process which took too long to accomplish results.

Using a lightning staff with Energy Barrage worked well against the Sha-Brytol earthshakers who had the same characteristics but it barred me from taking advantage of Restorative Veil so I started looking for alternative methods which didn't make me choose between mana and the Stonefist cooldown.

After doing some research on lightning spells I found out that Lightning Bolt caused paralysis but didn't leave enemies shocked and that it's upgrade Exploding Bolt worked remarkably well against commanding type enemies which tend to come surrounded by underlings crumpled by Pull of the Abyss.

Long story short, Lightning Bolt turns out to be the ideal complement for the usually fire and ice focused Rift Mage build when it comes to damaging and restraining annoying dual immunity enemies but many of us overlook it's potential because we most often avoid the Storm Tree altogether.

Pros: Can deal significant eletricity damage without leaving enemies shocked, Exploding Bolt Synergizes well with Pull of the Abyss and can set up Discharge combos with Stonefist.

Cons: Costs a lot of mana to cast and has a somewhat long cooldown (24 seconds).

So pretty much when lighting bolt is discharged, there's no aoe shocked status applied to any enemies nearby?

No, the purpose of discharge is to shock enemies to set up a sleep combo but the point here is that Lightning Bold doesn't do that on it's own.

If you use Chain Lightning, Static Cage or Energy Barrage with an electricity staff your enemies always get shocked and you can't inflict weakened on them but if you use Lightning Bolt they just get paralyzed and you can choose whether you want to discharge them with Stonefist, combo with Immolate (if he is vulnerable to fire) or simply enjoy the time your enemy remains paralyzed while the rest of your abilities cooldown. It gives ample room for flexibility.

More importantly, there are enemies who are immune not just to fire and ice but to physical effects aswell. Since this kind of enemy, like the aforementioned Qunari Shock Trooper, cannot be paralyzed at all at you wind up armed with a potent electricity damage spell which can be used alongside your weakening spells.

Nice. I had given up hope of ever finding a use for Lightning Bolt, with or without the Weakness/Sleep problem. Good to know that it finally has a good application.

So in order to get the most out of Lightning Bolt..

1) Use Pull of the Abyss with Shaken Veil upgrade.

2) Plant a Fire Mine that has Searing Glyph upgrade at the center of Pull of the Abyss.

3) When the enemies are clustered, use Lightning Bolt with Exploding Bolt upgrade.

Profit...Well, for you anyway...The enemies would be dead...

You say that like there is some other way to use those two abilities. ;)
