Early last year, I played DAI for PS4 -- the vanilla game, not GOTY.  It got to the point that through leveling up, the late game would become boring even on Nightmare.

Now with GOTY for PC, I'm playing on Hard with most of the Trials set to "on" so that I can get the special shipments.  I'm now finding the first part of the game extraordinarily tough!  All of sudden, many of those lame apostates in the Hinterlands have become mini-bosses whose protective barriers are pain to knock out.  I've finally begun to appreciate the Spirit Tree in a big way!

I also noticed in the boss fight against Widris in the Fallow Mire that Widris and the wisps guarding her were all Level 12 while my IQ was only a level 8.  As a result, I had to fight this battle mostly in tactical mode.  Just curious if it remains this tough all the way to the final battle?  Or do you ultimately level up over the trials?

It definitely gets easier, especially once everyone gets their specializations. The big thing early, as you've noted, is Dispel and more Dispel. Also carry different staff types with you in case you run into promoted barriers blocking access (like to the mage hideout). While normal ones can be taken out with any type of damage, the promoted ones will only take damage if you use the correct staff type against them (ie fire against ice, etc). And it still takes forever!

Ah yes, I always carry extra!  That's why increasing the number items I can carry becomes very important!  Prior to encountering Widris, my mage IQ was a DPS monster using both the Storm and Inferno trees while I kept Solas around as a support mage focused on the Spirit Tree and on the Ice/Frost tree.  Then I saw that Widris was resistant to both Fire and Electricity...   I had to respect my IQ; I also had to craft armor or armor limbs for Spirit Resistance.  "Trials" has definitely added a new dimension to the game!  The only trials I don't do are the ones that impact health potions.  Any fight in real time uses up potions quickly!

For me, JoH and Trespasser still have difficult fights. The other battles do get easier, even though they are still difficult (I play on Nightmare). I currently have Even Ground and Take It Slow on, oh and the Bear one. My mistake was, even though some of the battles are challenging, is that many are not as tough as they would be if I had been more prudent in my choice of armor and weapons. I crafted Tier 3 or 4 level items. I should have stayed with Tier 2 until I was level 12 or ready for Wicked . . . Hearts. I won't make that mistake next time. Heck, I probably could have done Hushed Whispers without any supply caches even though I was only level 4/5.

I really hate the Poisonous Spiders in JoH, just sayin' . . . .
