What if the Citadel and the ‘Ark’ are linked?
It seems that the jury is still out on if there is an actual mass relay hiding out in Dark Space, just waiting for the Citadels relay to be activated to let the Reapers through, but no one has really given any concrete proof that there is one out there. The Citadel obviously plays a huge role in the Reaper invasion as we saw in what Sovereign was trying to accomplish, opening and closing the passage to and from Dark Space, but where is the relay on the receiving end? Relays do work in pair’s right? This is where my mind started to wonder; What if there is a mass relay out in Dark Space, but being it has to connect to the Citadel from such a distance, it would have to be big, Citadel size big. This is what I believe to be ‘The Ark’. ‘The Ark’ is actually the Dark Space relay.
The Dark Space relay could be a sister ship to the Citadel, created by the Reapers as their main link into the Milky Way galaxy from Dark Space, as the other mass relay connecting to the Citadel. The Dark Space relay could be built alongside the Citadel and then sent out into Dark Space once both are complete. The Reapers could then follow the relay as it is escorted out of the galaxy once they have finished harvesting from their current cycle, and go beyond the edge of the galaxy into Dark Space. Giving each cycle lasts 50,000 years, this would give the Reapers more than enough time for them and the relay to find a good parking spot. Once far enough out from the galaxy, and without the risk of being found, they went dormant alongside the relay. Having the Citadel and the Dark Space relay work in tangent, this would be their main way of entering and exiting the galaxy at a moment’s notice, and ravaging the galaxy for millennia. (Moving to the events of ME1) When Sovereign is defeated at the battle for the Citadel, the Reapers are left without their conventional way of getting into the galaxy, so they leave the relay and head for the edge of the galaxy, and the nearest mass relay. This can obviously be seen in the end of ME2. (Skipping ME2 and the events of ME3) Once the Citadel and the mass relay network are repaired following the end of the Reaper war, which would obviously be far in the future, they no doubt ably would have to move around the galaxy and have a central location to converge, being the Citadel, they in time could grow curious of the Citadels relay. Wondering on where it leads, they activate it, and with no threat of any remaining Reapers coming through the relays connection, they investigate, and eventually venture through. Discovering the Dark Space relay on the other side, they soon realise the scale of the relay, being very proportionate to the Citadel in size and design but with some obvious differences such as large and prominent engines, but also discovering it’s just a relay, but another Citadel style station. From here, the station could then be retro fitted to accommodate life as on the Citadel, and being that it could house life outside of the Milky Way galaxy, and being it’s in the galactic void of other galaxies, it could be coined ‘The Ark’, for sustaining life in a sea of emptiness.
Now this was just a speculation to what the Ark really is. I find in this kind of scenario there’s no need for any secret mission to build an intergalactic Ark in the middle of the Reaper war to flee in case the Crucible fails, being they were too busy with the war itself, or is then affected by the many different outcomes of the end of ME3, being it is discovered far in the future, and once the Citadel is repaired, as it is seen exploding once the Crucible is fired. Regarding the voyage to Andromeda itself, with the discovery of the ‘Ark’, ARKCON or the ARK CONtingency could be formed as an exploration group to use the Ark as an exploration tool, and could possibly be used as a generation ship to get to Andromeda. The Pathfinder Initiative could then be a task force at the head of ARKCON, at the forefront of exploration within the systems of Andromeda.
I based a lot of the speculation of the Ark from the N7 day trailer, as it seems that will be our ship, so when I say there are similarities and differences, I’m looking at both ships/stations simultaneously.
On a side note, If I had to give the Dark Space relay a true name like ‘Alpha’ or ‘Mu’ Relay, not just a regular cannon name like ‘Dark Space Relay’, it would be ‘The Void Relay ‘ being it’s in the empty void between galaxies, and kind of fits in with the Reapers doom and gloom name game. This would obviously be the case if the Ark was not the relay, so who knows we may pass the Void Relay when traveling to Andromeda on the actual Ark?
