So I just unlocked the Cabal Vanguard

It's almost like RNGesus read my mind. I've been hoping to get the Cabal for some time now.
My Vanguard class was level 8, so I went for a simple 3/0/3/3/3 build and took the Cabal into a Bronze game. It went fairly smoothly. I'm liking the melee attacks and Biotic Charge replacement, and being able to dodge doesn't hurt. That said, I have concerns about the viability of a melee build on Gold or Platinum. Since the Cabal doesn't regain shields when she uses Poison Strike, it seems to me that it's substantially more difficult to survive at close range.
What are some strategies for dealing with this? Is there an optimal tradeoff between damage and survivability (specifically looking at the Biotic Focus damage resistance and the Fitness health/shields upgrades)? I'd like to run a melee build at higher difficulties.

I've managed to do okay with her in Gold as a melee character, but I have never managed to develop the kind of confidence that I get with a Shadow or a KroLord.
Her best survival attributes are her ability to make quick escapes and the barrier generation evolution of Biotic Focus. When using her melee, I tend to use the strike for escape more than offence.
When I do use it for offence, I go "Toro Toro" as per Dragonracer's technique. You have invulnerability frames as any other Vanguard does, so the trick is to keep the refresh low enough to repeat as necessary (if going that way with the build.)
For melee, though, it interferes with Biotic Focus, which is the more beneficial ability to a melee character, so I go with weapon/blades/Melee for offense, and I only put 3 points in Strike (choq!
Sacrilege!) To really make strike an escape ability, the distance evolution opens up the map considerably for tactical relocation and escape.

Her melee sucks : most of the damage is damage over time, even though the total damage is very good. So targets will not die right away when you'll melee them and kill you very fast (especially collectors, phantoms, maraudeurs...)

Her light melee is better than her heavy melee, since it is fast and it staggers, and gives you DR. She's one of the few characters who can take on two marauders with light melee and win.

Reference build. Wraith, Arc Pistol or Talon also work very well. Just ve aware of stairs, because the dodge is buggy and you'll often dodge in place, meaning the dodge animation will play out, but you'll stay were you are.

I wish the Slayer's LM tracked as well as the Shadow's does.

Not sure if it was ever tested thoroughly, but it's quite a lot of DR actually, tho not as much as the Slayer's for sure.
Peddro even made a video about her using a melee build, back in the days. I'll see if I can find it.
Oh and OP, congratulations, and good luck not getting frustrated as all hell with her and her buggy dodge

46664, spam biotic focus for barriers, blades for cc, prime with incendiary ammo, use poison strike for detonating, full weapon passives.
This. Plus PS detonates everything. So use her with biotics like those with Reave. Crazy damage output.

PS for mobility and to get out of hairy situations or to short cut through the level
Blades to stagger enemies that get too close
Zoomed Javelin + Biotic Focus = enjoy the free, level wide increased range Hunter Vision

You mean there are still people who don't run double dash?
I don't. No real point.
