Is the whole horcrux thing with the amulet and Flemeth directly related to this incident in WoT2?

Spoiler

Is she so adamant about Merrill not playing with ancient forces because of this incident, or what?

Fascinating, was this in her lore entry? If so it would certainly explain why Marethari would drag her clan so far away from its normal camping grounds and sit in one place for so long. You know, besides the terrible plot contrivances in DA2 of course.

I think Maretharis dislike for the mirror is more tied to the fact that the thing cost her two good hunters and perhaps more, if the tainted elves in Witch Hunt belonged to her clan. Like you wouldn't want to restore the cellphone that fried your kids brain, even if the phone itself is super good and it was just a faulty software (that had been removed) that caused the frying.

I think the story is just to set the debt between Flemmeth and Marethari. Like if you saved the life of an antique dealer you might ask them to value an artifact for you in the future. I don't think Flemmeth was counting on Marethari to deal with the horcrux at that time, just that now she had a person who knew ancient magic in her debt.

Yep, it's her lore entry. It says the clan originally kept camp in the Frostbacks. It doesn't say why, exactly, the Avvar attacked... just that Marethari responded by taking the clan to the lowlands. And apparently exacting bloody revenge LOL.

Ha! Good analogy. Makes sense to me, considering Marethari's responses in DA2.

She apparently knew (somehow??) that you were bringing the genie in the bottle: "I listened. To the wind. To the birds, as the hunters do. To my dreams. I watched the stars. There is great wisdom to be found all around us, if you know how to listen for it. But I was not certain. Nothing is certain."

If you ask her what the amulet is, she says that it's a promise "made by one whose word still has weight, and therefore it has terrible power. There are few things in this world stronger than a promise kept. Remember that."

It's just what they do. The Avvar raid the lowlands to get supplies they can't acquire otherwise. The occasional raid keeps both sides sharp, as Chief Sun-Hair puts it.

War is an entirely different matter, which is why she doesn't support the Jaws of Hakkon.

I see. I guess the lowlands were too far, this time? :P

To be clear, the Avvar are also pretty territorial. And they have no love for elves.

Dwarves, on the other hand, they're pretty cool with.

Who is the Keeper that died in that story? Wasn't Daddy Mahariel killed by humans in an ambush when he was alone with Mommy Mahariel?

You know what's funny? DAO Marethari criticises Duncan for destroying the eluvian, as she wanted to study it and find a cure for the Taint.

DA2 Marethari and DA2 Merril are almost entirely new characters.

^ Oooh, good one, I didn't catch that. The WoT2 blurb doesn't mention Mahariel, but the wiki tells me that Papa Mahariel was indeed the Keeper prior to Marethari. And since they both died of wounds from skirmishes with humans, I'm betting they're supposed to be the same guy. The book says the whole clan was attacked though, not just ma and pa.
