Eh, Patrick Weekes is like most writers for games. Sometimes, he has moments of brilliance like with the character Mordin. Sometimes, he misses.
For the topic: I felt Felicia Day did a fine job as Tallis. She can act pretty well, although I'm not a huge fan. My problem was not only the Mary Sue factor (imho Bianca was far worse,) it was that it looked like a face scan. When a DLC character is better detailed than the PC, down to little details like freckles, that's an issue for me. I think I would have liked Ms. Day's performance a lot more if she didn't play such a favored character.
Ms. Chobot is not a professional voice actor and it really shows. She may be very nice and a fan, but I wanted to punch Allers far more than Khalisa. I'm not trying to come down on her, but she can't act her way out of a paper bag. Or maybe she could do better, but the VA director was guiding her to voice Allers in a specific way. Bland, dry, and a little airheaded. Also, it doesn't help that Allers' design looks like an Uncanny Valley character with an allergy to bees (seriously, what is up with those cheeks?)
Give me Khalisa any day of the week. She at least had her heart in the right place and I never hit her. I don't believe, either as Shep or in real life, for committing violence against the press just because they dared say something that someone didn't like. It also doesn't help that I had to ask fans what happened to Emily. When I was told that they killed her off in a real world tweet, it made resent Allers that much more.
The point is that it's been a very mixed bag over the years. We've had replacement characters with horrible design and worse voice acting. There has also been good characters with great voice acting that turned out to be Mary Sues, something these games need like a hole in the head.
I also think that the whole "gamer girl/guy" needs to just go away. It doesn't matter what you may or may not have swinging between your legs. If someone enjoys games, then who cares? In fact, I think the whole mentality is creating yet another unnecessary division in gamer culture. Which is just silly, and frankly, juvenile.
Anyway, no creating roles for non-professional VA's just to fill space, or because they might be a "friend". No more favors from IGN, and if they have someone like Felicia doing another character, don't make them into Mary Sues. If a fan of the series that is an actor like Seth Green comes on, that's fine. He's at least a professional actor and imho, Joker wasn't a Mary Sue. Felicia Day was fine by me; in fact, the only thing I liked about her character was the voice acting. However, the ME and DA teams need to stop adding people from the gaming culture just because someone might like the either series.
