That's pretty much why they do it.

It's a vicious cycle.

Ah, Nintendo Power. It was a simpler time, a better time.

Back when video games were made with words like "entertain" and "enjoyment" in mind.

We have words like "mainstreaming" and "commercial success" now to replace those.

The power of Nintendo is no longer relevant.

Perhaps we need another thread to discuss Nintendo.

Yeah, but they also had those Cheat/900 Hotlines back in the day too. We don't need to go back to that at least.

They can't even get bacon right.  Can ya blame them?

We have the same bacon as the states.  What you call Canadian Bacon we call Ham (or maybe Back Bacon in some places).

It's kind of a misconception that Nintendo was ever like, the biggest thing ever and all gamers revolved around them.

In fact I remember quite clearly playing like, I don't know, Pilotwings or something and really enjoying it, and I still don't really know anyone else that ever played that game, for example.

And nowadays the situation is similar, people don't really talk about Pikmin 3 but there it is..

Outside of Super Mario, and maybe Zelda, big huge one offs like Tetris on Game boy or Arcade Donkey Kong, Nintendo games sold really about the same then as they did now, and oftentimes less than many other games around them.

The most disappointing period in Nintendo's history was honestly the Wii generation (when it was hugely popular)

The point is, no one I I know ever seriously played Nintendo games for any other reason than that they really enjoyed them and wanted to play them, being at the absolutely zeitgeist forefront of whatever was never their game.

If you wanted to play the huge massively major thing that rolled in bazillions of people playing and was the focus of attention, you were better off playing Doom or World of Warcraft or something.

The present is no different.

Nintendo was big. But Sega was huge and the more popular brand as I remember. At one point they had games for three consoles out on the shelves to Nintendo's one and even Atari had a stake in the hand held market. But overall who wound up surviving?

Yeah... I'm not like a fan that just says oh it's all good and it's always good just because, but like, they certainly still exist and stuff like Skyward Sword was as amazing an experience you could find anywhere in gaming and that came out just last generation.

Are all the departures by US citizens? Cameron Harris stated that she was returning to Seatlle. People outside Canada may not know that our dollar has fallen a lot in the past 2 years, from par or better with the US buck to about .75. (The governor of our central bank has stated that this is around the expected exchange rate in the abscence of an oil investment boom.) If Harris was working out of Montreal, she would also be subject to some of the highest income taxes in Canada.

Could be just other opportunities with better income prospects.

The corollary of this could be that if you are a Canadian writer or other gamee'(?) or someone just starting out, opportunities may be better at this time. Start working on your portfolios.

I don't even know what a hostess pie is and the only kind I can think of involves three bottles of ryncol and a trip to the mile high club.

Green custard however I thoroughly approve of. I can work with that.

So a hostess pie is basically a Cornish pasty, full of jam instead of meat? You learn something new every day.
