I think DA:2 combat is much better than DA:O, although I have only spent a few hours on both games. i thought DA:O combat was hard to control, everyone just ended up in a bunch hacking away. Did I miss something? DA:2 certainly was easier for me to get into.

Depends on what you mean? I think the tactics system is alot better, easier to set up etc. I Like how the game isn't swarming with spells. But if i think the animation and flow of combat is better? Not really. I prefer the slowed paced combat from DA:O.

Every DA game essentially amounts to hacking away at a life bar.

But as someone who prefers playing Rogues, I much prefer the mobility and array of tricks and skills they got in DA2 than DAO.

Some of the bosses are decent too (at least higher difficulties). I remember you agreed once on that. It's not Demon Souls or anything, but I don't think DAO even has anything like that.

I did say that :D

Although I did also say that Bioware in general didn't do very good boss fights but some, notably Malvernis, at least forced me to switch up my tactics rather than just DPSing the crap out of everything a la DAO.

I much refer DA2's combat, it flows better and is much more enjoyable for me. DAO's is just one long, slow, awkward headache.

I have to use those faster combat mods now just to get through the slogfest.

And the end fight mod that destroys everything on the screeen, when I'm truly lazy.

I don't really like doing that, but after 5 years of owning the game, I think I've earned it.

I like the pace of combat better in DA2. That was more due to the engine. DAO is a vastly superior game overall, but DA2 has grown on me quite a bit.

Agreed I prefer DA2's combat over DAO as well. Story wise I think DAO has the edge as DAO) probably has the best story overall DAI does get pretty close to it though. But in pretty much every other area I think both DA2 and DAI supercede DAO.

I think the version of DA2 that was patched with auto-attack is better.

I really disliked DA2's combat the first time I played the game (I think it was balanced to include Dog, and I didn't want to install it), but I played it about 3 times last year with Dog, and really got to like the flow and all the tricks to beat the tougher fights - well, everything except the high level enemy rogues, those are just ridiculous and annoying.

I liked the faster pace. I felt much more mobile as mage and twirling my staff around made it seem more dynamic. The ability trees came across more organized than the extensive skills in DA:O. Though I at first I did think there was a lockpick skill somewhere I simply could not find x)

I found DAO combat to be stiff and awkward compared tp DA2 & DAI. I think DA2 was my favorite for combat but I liked the jumping ability in DAI.

(Thread not dead yet.)

I felt DA2 was a refined Origin combat, generally speaking -- and I prefer DA2 overall. I favor playing as a mage, and even though some of the spell changes from Origins are kind of UGH (Cone of Cold whyyy) I still feel like I can live up to the title of Champion. DAI is... fun. Felt too amputated. (Yes, I'm talking about the absent power wheel rawr.)

Jumping to save my life is a natural reflex since... forever. I just wish we didn't slow down in combat.

Actually what few attempts I made at playing DA:2 I found the battle system the same in each game and easy to use. I don't use that stupid technical cam in any game because it slows the battle down.

I really hate Hawke's yelling during battle. Sheese. It sounds so retarded.

I preferred archers in DAO, but I muuuuuch prefer playing a mage in DA2 compared to DAO. Your movements are more dynamic and you can fight in close quarters instead of just standing still and shooting tiny zaps out of your staff like a potato gun.

2H Warrior is way better in DA2 than in any other DA game. Other than that? Nah. It has some good things though, but for mage I prefer DAO and DAI. I have never tried rogue Hawke.

I do prefer the faster pace of combat to the "slog fest" (like someone put it) of DAO. That game was only fun to play as a mage, in my opinion. Mage had better skill trees in DAO and way better specializations. I only like the blood mage specialization in DA2. DAI was much better in this regard, I really enjoyed combat in that game, my only complaint is that I wish we could use more skills and have more than one specialization (though the trainers coming to Skyhold to give us quest to earn our specialization was really cool and special, I liked that. It was part of the story and the companions commented it too, that was something I want to see in the future games as well).

In DA2 I don't like how fast health drops or the potion system. Some fights seem to go on forever with you just hacking the foes whose health bar goes down painfully slowly... it's like chopping wood or something, not creatures made of flesh and bone. Works for Golems I guess... Also I don't like enemy hoards spawning out of nowhere when you're already in middle of fight. It gets tiresome.

All in all combat wise I think DA2 is the weakest game so far. DAO and DAI are really different, but I enjoyed them both! For future games I hope they continue improving what they did with DAI.

I thought the Combat was great in both DAO and DA2 but I can see how someone could like DA2 because of how your team works together to make class cross combos or whatever it's called. :)

Pros and cons.

I loved the abilities and spells in DA2 the most (more interesting trees than DA:O and more variety of abilities than DA:I) , as well as the sophisticated companion tactics (WHY WHY WHY did Inquisition abandon these? Such a disappointment!). The flashy, OTT animations took a bit of getting used to, but once I swallowed the whole 'It's just Varric's narrative' thing I found myself enjoying it.

That said, DA2 also has the most frustrating encounters. The wave system of enemies popping up hamstrings your ability to plan tactically, the lack of overhead camera means you frequently can't place AOE spells/abilities where you want, and numerous big bosses are simply an exercise in health-bar grind. Combat often ends up feeling like a chore, which saps the fun right out of it.

Like a lot of DA2, the combat has a lot of good points which are overshadowed by the flaws.

Dragon Age 2 combat system was extremely satisfying after the first. I just wasn't a fan of the combat system of origins even tho they have given you more variety on the first, with duel wielding swords and arcane warrior & endless abilities... With that said, the combat system was extremely dull & just not enjoyable even with all the extra abilities you had at your disposal. I found myself playing 2 more than I ever did the original. Hawke was a total bad*ss, who instead of getting smack around as a Mage, could literally beat you with the staff if you got too close. Idk I enjoyed DA2 combat system way more than the original, just more satisfying when slaughtering enemies. Hawke felt like an absolute killing machine.

As a update,I finally stayed interested in the game and just finished the Deep Roads expedition and I can justly say for me there's no difference between the three games battle systems. I found all three easy to use.

I preferred Origins combat myself. DA2 combat always seemed a bit too cartoonish

I loved DA2 combat, I wish they kept it for that game after it.
