That wouldn't have hurt, and for the most part I like her views on the Circle, but what really has me disappointed that I can't romance her is Indira Varma's voice.

Good lord....... But anyway when I first played DA:I and saw this beautiful black woman as a companion I was very excited to pursue her as a romance option, but I couldn't because she keeps pushing me away. I was very dissapointed that the writers wrote it that way for players to not to romance her because they don't want a black woman as a love interest, and it really bothers me that they do that. They claimed they all for diversity but having a black woman as a romantic interest is a no-no to them obviously. Sad really.....

I didn't have to deal with the constant pushing away. I got my disappointment out of the way before the game even came out, since I'd been reading up on the LIs.

I don't know if you're right that their reasoning was that they didn't want to make a black woman an LI. They made a pretty dark woman an LI in DA2. She wasn't black, but I'm nearly certain she doesn't count as white.

And for that matter The Iron Bull comes off as a bit Middle Eastern to me.

Isabella doesn't even count and some people say that she's a white woman at first in Origins and decide to make her dark to make her a "black character". But it is obvious that they don't want a real African woman as a romance option and she's the only playable female character that's not a LI.

Those people are wrong. I've seen her under different lighting due to an... adult mod. Her skin tone is only slightly darker in DA2.

Presumably because they'd already planned out her romance with Bastien by the time they lengthened the development cycle, which meant they didn't add her to the list along with Cullen and Solas.

Isabela uses the darkest skintone for DAO.

Even if you wouldn't call her black, she could be mistaken for a dark Indian/South Asian or something.

I think it's intentional to not have Vivienne as a LI. And Isabella isn't a black woman but either an Indian or Moorish Spaniard descent, and if she is her hair would be nappy with braids, afros, or dreadlocks and her facial features will have African features.

Well her writer said she was black afaik.. so she knows best.

I chalk it up to bad engine and not making the best effort at design.

If the writer is black then why didn't she write a romance with Vivienne to have players the opportunity to pursue her as a love interest? (Unless they say to the writer don't have no black woman as a romantic interest.) And the whole poor engine performance of creating black people us the lamest excuse I've ever heard from them.

I'm just stating the obvious and why she's the only playable female character who's not a romantic interest because the write it to be that way.

Mary Kirby is black? I have no idea if she is or not. She wrote Vivienne.

Sheryl Chee wrote Isabela.. she's not black. I thought she was Canadian and American Indian or something. If that means anything (it doesn't).

You gotta admit though. The DAO/DA2 engine sucks.

You are stating an accusatory interpretation of the obvious with little to back it.

And here I thought spammers were supposed to be refined.

Oh I thought you said that the writer was a black person! My mistake. She should've write it for her to be a romance option.

I liked Vivienne well enough.  Her viewpoints offer different roleplay opportunities depending on what type of Inquisitor you want to play.  She's interesting to me, challenges me.  My Dalish disliked her viewpoints and didn't get along with her, but my Circle loyal Andrastian Herald, pissed off at Fiona and other 'idiots who sought violence as a solution' who killed her mentor, had a sympatico relationship with Viv, ending with a Vivienne Divine.

She's certainly not my favorite character, but I like her.  I enjoy all the companions for what they bring to the table, a rare change from the previous installments of the game since some companions I actually hated.

As for the "Black romance denied us" argument, that's just downright silly.  Since there is appears to be (at this time) no cultural distinction between skin color in Thedas, she behaves in all respects like any other human mage with the same opportunities as any other human mage would have and faces the same prejudices because of her magic abilities, not the color of her skin.  She's a virtual character and written to be the way she is and she is in a relationship with an Orlesian noble.  By the time she loses him, the game is nearly over, too late to help her grieve and maybe offer an inkling of something more.  Nearly every other companion (and 2 of the advisors) is romanceable.  This isn't a dating sim and romance content is optional.  I would think, considering they haven't had one yet, or even a hint of one, dwarven romance fans have a bigger complaint.

If you wanted a black woman as a romance, you could always have used the toolset to alter Leliana or Morrigan, which would have been just as applicable as Vivienne being one since none of these women view skin as a distinctive marking feature.

The only thing I could think of is maybe they considered it at one point.. she was in many of their early promo material with Cass.

Then suddenly Solas popped up, extra races were added, and it morphed into a different game. Vivienne in general seemed to not be promoted as she was before. Even the whole Circle and Templar thing meant crap in the end.. so her role wasn't important to the story anymore.

Because of her boyfriend? Like I'd already pointed out to you?

I stopped recruiting  Vivi since I find her a royal pia and tied to the outdated Circles that didn't work. The Templars help doom the Circles with their brutality, rape and murder. In my games the Templars seal their fate in Val Royeaux.

There's a few I don't want to recruit, but I don't like my teams too pathetically small. So I keep her. I boot Iron Bull. She's more useful anyways.

How is it silly by saying that they don't want no black woman as a romance option? They have her in the game as a tease to tempt gamers to pursue her as a romance option but she ended up laughing at the protagonist's face and telling him no, and they set up the "Duke Bastienne dying" as an excuse for not to romance her from the start for not to be a LI from the start. They should've have Vivienne as a romance option @ Trespasser DLC at least to give players a chance to have a relationship with her, but they didn't and that's why I said they don't want a black woman as love interest. I don't want to alter Leliana or Morrigan to be black, I want to have a relationship an actual black woman.

I think you're reading too much into their intentions. And making them out to be literally malicious even.

But I will agree that she was a squandered character. And it's sad because she's a rare black character too. But I'd extend this complaint to the whole game in general. They stopped telling a story about mages and templars and reverted to another "save the world" story and grafted in random **** about elves. They squandered politics in general.
