For sword and shield, your warrior can have a long sword, a hand axe, or a mace.

For 2H, the great sword, the maul, or the battle axe.

Are there situations where a mace is better than a sword?  Or a maul better than a great sword, etc.?  Or should you be looking purely at the DPS stat?  I ask because I just got the "Masterwork Wave Blade" schematic and I find that the weapon produced has less DPS than the Tier 2 sword and shield axe schematic I previously purchased at Val Royeaux.

If it's all just a matter of DPS, than there are plenty of same tier schematics you'll end up ignoring since they have a smaller "damage" slot in the schematic.

not sure if its the case in DAI, but in previous versions hammer weapons (mauls, maces, etc) had a higher armor penetration and damage, but slower swing speeds. So they all ended up kinda even in the end.

In DAI the big advantage for 2h warriors is AOE damage, mauls only hit one target at a time so take that into consideration.

DPS is a slightly misleading stat in DAI unless you're going to auto-attack all the time. Ability damage is tied to base weapon damage, so that's the key stat to look at.

Early on on the game when you will be auto-attacking more due to having few abilities, you can animation-cancel by using the scan button, which negates the higher attack speed of mauls/maces, and means you should still go for whichever weapon has higher base damage.

For 2h warriors, in the vanilla game, I'd recommend the dragon hunters axe, to help maximise crit chsnce for flow of battle. If you have Trespasser DLC and a previous playthrough, you can get the chromatic greatsword or prismatic battleaxe schematics. While they don't have any upgrade slots, the extra elemental damage makes up for this. And is also applied to any abilities, not just auto-attacks! For a reaver, I'd recommend the chromatic GS, even though the auto-attack physical damage is capped at 50%, as a reaver you won't be auto-attacking much at all so the higher base damage wins. Also, it looks more awesome.

W&S or 2H weapon choice, assuming the same stats and attributes, only matters in these three small ways: 1) the animation for auto-attacks are different, 2) the selection of upgrades is different, 3) for auto-attacks only, the rate of hits and attack routines are different (related to #1).

Some auto-attack routine details are here (open the Autoattacks section):
http://forum.bioware...mbat-mechanics/

For the same tier/level limitation, axes tend to have the higher base damage over the other two W&S options and mauls have the higher base damage over the other 2H options.

For the rest, I agree with Gya. DPS is just an approximation and only applies to auto-attacks. I generally ignore it and look at base damage and other attributes. Base damage, Attack%, Utility that gives Attack% (like Strength for a Warrior), Rune, special effects and Crit Chance/Crit Damage are the most important contributors to ability damage. All else being equal, the more Utility and Attack slots the weapon has, the better.
