How does one justify choosing Bhelen without metagaming?

My canon warden starts out helping harrowmont, then he visits the Lowtown, hears about how Casteless are treated by the so called highborn and most of the population, finds himself having to force a FATHER  to not renegate his daughter and her child just because of a mark and, in the end, how Bhelen has a different opinion than most..... well, he has a change of mind

My warden, human mage, actually becomes really REALLY sick with most underground dwarves after Orzammar, the only ones he actually goes away liking are the Casteless, most of the Legion's members and the warrior/smith caste (if nothing else because they are at least honest)

My canon Warden (elf mage) supported Harrowmont because Harrowmont didn't ask him to lie for him, but he was so sick of Orzammar by the time of the Assembly that he came away with a very similar POV to yours, Lezio.  It was only reinforced when he recruited Sigrun in Awakening.

When my first Grey Warden, a female elf mage first came to Orzammar she didn't get good impressions. The city was closed off entirely just while they chose a new King. Rediculous! She felt.

Then she sees two sets of nobles squabbling over who should be king which ends in blood being spilled so it paints the Dwarves as foolish. From those impressions Elizia Surana finds herself not caring one way or another and travels straight to the Assembly to get on with the task of gaining military support. The tour can wait 'til she's done her duty.

After the scene at the Assembly where that ******* forces a recess just as she needed to address the Assembly, she turns around and sees Bhelen's helper standing right there. She talks to him and finds she has to run an errand for him to even see the so-called Prince, (and since there's no way out of jumping through hoops like a circus monkey) she does the errand and that's pretty much how she ended up siding with Bhelen. It was just convenient she ran into his helper first.

When you talk to all NPCs in Orzammar, you get, that Bhelen is ruthless, but open for changes - and Harrowmond is fair, but conservative. And you get from some dialogues, that what Orzammar needs, is more open-mindness. Especially more people to fight the darkspawn and more contacts to the surface - which means more rights for castless and surface dwarves. Harrowmont makes it clear, that he will never allow that, while Bhelen has no problem with that idea. SO for me, Bhelen is the better choice - I don't need metagaming for that, you just have to talk to the people around and ask Bhelen and Harrowmond everything you can ask them - even if it seems unpolite.

My Dalish elf just arrived in Orzammar and after that display in the commons between Bhelen and Harrowmont, it made sense that my Warden would be inclined to choose the candidate that seemed the most able. My Warden just wanted the Dwarven support and was getting tired of being given the run around. The first meeting with Bhelen actually impressed me though, Bhelen seemed to have his head screwed on and he largely agreed with my Warden that the Darkspawn were the real threat. Knowing a thing or two about being persecuted, my elf was also inclined to support Bhelen's attempt to reform the system and allow the castelass an opportunity to make a life away from the slums.

Cliche as compared to Cousland?

Yes. Indeed - she's the hero that lives to die, pretty much.

Dwarf Noble: I roleplay him as being heavily involved in Orzammar politics and impressed with Bhelen's political maneuvering of him and Trian. I also roleplay him as wanting to keep the Orzammar throne with House Aeducan, so the Dwarven Noble Warden is fine with leaving Orzammar in his brother's hands while the Warden deals with the Blght.

Dwarf Commoner: Rica is in love with Bhelen and he can give her a better live. I also rolelay my DC as seeing Bhelen's ascension to the throne as the only way for things to improve for the other Castless Dwarves.

Non-Dwarfs: Depends on the mood really.

TBH my Aeducan picked Bhelen for one specific reason. To keep the throne in the Aeducan family for long enough that she can deal with the Blight and then have her brother assassinated, blame that on the darkspawn returning back to the Deep Roads and then take his throne.

Plus she finds it very funny that Bhelen is aware she's nowhere near as forgiving as she comes across so he'll be on tenterhooks the entire time.

And then she has her kingdom, her Paragon status and Bhelen's kid as a handy dandy heir to the throne. At least for the next decade-ish.

As a Dwarf Commoner, it was easy. He wants reforms and he raised my sister up to official mistress. And he doesn't treat me like garbage, unlike the rest or Orzammar.

My DN actually did kill Trian, so he didn't have a grudge against Bhelen. He also knew first-hand that Harrowmont was spineless, and Bhelen promises to clear his name, and the throne stays with the Aeducans despite the fratricide...so It was an easy choice.
