I first got into Bioware games around late 2010, after my sister had borrowed Origins from a friend and lent it to me because she knew I was looking for something new to play. I got totally hooked, immediately went out and bought my own copy as well as ME1 and ME2, as well as DA2 when it came out. Since then I've been playing pretty much every game they've made.

That being said, I've had a hard time getting into BG due to being so out of practice with isometric games, so I've yet to complete the game. I've also got JE and NWN, but haven't gotten far into them, because DAI keeps distracting me.

(Any advice for how to play BG would be grand, I seriously want to love this game but I keep rage-quitting after I get my entire party killed for the millionth time)

It's been a while since I played it but I remember I found the BG games pretty hard at the time. If you're playing the Enhanced Edition there's also a few changes compared to the original version.

  • Character creation is a lot more important here than it is in DA. You should re-roll until you get as many points to spread out in the stats as possible (I'd say 80 at the very least when you add all the stats together). Regardless of the class I usually put lots of points in Charisma (affects quests and store prices) and a decent amount in Constitution (HP). Then depending on the class you chose you should max out (18 or 19 depending on the PC's race) their preferred attribute (Intelligence for mages, Strength for fighters etc.)
  • Party composition: at least one cleric for healing and one mage for offensive spells. IIRC archers are pretty good, so if you're not one yourself you should pick up Kivan pretty early. 1-2 strong front-line fighters and 1 thief to check for traps/pick locks.
  • BG has lots and lots of companions, but I usually stick with the people you find pretty early on: Khalid/Jaheira; Minsc/Dynaheir; Imoen, Edwin, Branwen, Kivan. Also, companions will leave you if your reputation gets too high/low for their alignment.
  • When it comes to THAC0 and AC the lower the better. All the experience you get is divided by the number of people in the party (max 6). Companions only gain XP if they're in the active party.
  • Consumables are really useful: potions of healing, potions of haste, scrolls, wands etc.
  • Magic Missile is one of a few lvl 1 mage spell that remains useful all the way. Dispel Magic and Haste at lvl 3 are also pretty good. Friendly fire is always on I think, so be careful with areas of effect spells. You get a limited amount of spells per 'day', sleeping renews them. Sleeping only gets 1HP so use all your healing spells beforehand. Best done in an inn because you can get attacked when sleeping outside. Sleeping in dungeons also makes enemies respawn iirc.

Dungeons and Dragons nerdgasm! ^_^

When I first played BG I started up the MP game and made six of my own characters, then copied the save into the SP save folder. It was a long time ago, so it may have been a little more fiddly than that to get it to work, but it wasn't until a much later second PT that I knew much of anything about the companions.

Baldurs Gate II. I don't really have a story about it, i think. Me and a friend found both Baldurs Gate II and Morrowind at a store and we bought them both. Spent the whole Easter vacation at my place just playing the games and talking about them. It was awesome, and since then i have been a slave to RPG's from Bioware and Bethesda.
