Greetings.

I have been wondering - How useful is Ice Armor on Nightmare with Trials if you play with a full team of 4 ?

I know that Ice Armor is essential for a Nightmare solo (with or without Trials) but if I have another 3 followers with my Mage Inquisitor, is it necessary or can my Inquisitor just rely on Fade Step, Barrier, healing masterwork enchantments and guard generating masterwork enchantments ?

I am asking because I find it a waste to go down the Winter Tree and invest a lot of points there. Most of the abilities with the exception of Fade Step and Winter's Grasp (Winter's Ruin upgrade) do not do enough damage. Furthermore, Ice Mine (Chilling Array upgrade) does not give you 100% armor reduction and Blizzard (Winter Winds upgrade) damage is too low to justify using it on Nightmare. Lastly, many enemies are strongly resistant to Cold.

I only use ice armor for my companions. With barrier fade step and healing enchantments I don't see a need for it, especially if you have a warrior doing aggro or a fellow Mage doing Crowd control or support barrier. It is a far way down the winter tree to get. I figured those points can go into passives.

My setup is usually either one of these :-

  • 2 caster mage, 1 warrior, 1 double dagger rogue
  • 1 caster mage, 1 archer rogue, 2 warriors
  • 1 caster mage, 1 knight enchanter, 1 archer rogue, 1 warrior
  • 1 archer rogue, 1 knight enchanter, 1 warrior, 1 double dagger rogue

That is why I was wondering if I even need Ice Armor if I am playing as a mage because there is always at least a warrior or a knight enchanter to tank.

What XP level?

When playing at low XP level, before Skyhold, I found Ice Armor and Chilling Array to be well worth the points, regardless of the composition of the rest of the party. Particularly if you are doing a no-crafting or limited crafting run.

On the other end of the spectrum, as a level-capped mage, if you have extra points you don't otherwise know what to do with, why not spend them in Winter? I ran a level-capped RM through Descent and Trespasser with Ice Armor + Chilling Array + Frost Step, and having 50% physical damage reduction was extremely useful against those otherwise one-shotting Hurlock Archers or Qunari Spearmen.

In between, from level 7 to level 16 or so, after Skyhold and specialization, I would agree it's not as efficient a use of points, though I still put it on a support mage when I have two in the party for a while. For example, in my current NM+Trials party of Archer Artificer, Blackwall, Dorian, Vivienne, I had Ice Armor + Chilling Array + Winter's Ruin + Mana Surge on Vivienne before her KE tree was filled out. Now that she's fully KE, with tons of Barrier, I can reassign those points to something else.

Here's a video of that setup when I could only spare a couple of points in KE. You have to admit, having that Venatori Harlequin step on an Ice Mine when she tried to flank Viv is pretty satisfying. Start at 2:40.

Does anyone else have a bug with ice armor just staying permanently on all the time?

It is a passive from the winter school for mages. It grants 50% damage reduction when you are stand near a frozen enemy or a cold spell.

And here i thought it was an actual piece of physical, wearable armor. Figures i wouldn't know what it was. I never play as a mage and stick to putting points into the  specialization and lighting tress for the mages.

I was recommended to use Ice Mine/Chilling Array for Vivienne as she was very squishy before doing so - and it's perfect. Combined with Ice Armor, it basically makes Vivienne untouchable. I wouldn't call Ice Armor essential, though, as she did fine w/o it as well. Plus it looks a bit silly.
