We should be able to have kids.

As long as it was optional, and not mandatory for any romance. My husband and I took ourselves out of the gene pool years ago. I love my niece and my nephews, but I don't want kids in reality. I really don't want to RP a parent in the ME series. Plus, as someone pointed out, BW doesn't exactly have the best track record of kid NPCs, and I'm not just talking about the Kid In The Vent.

Ha OP is fueling my HM kick by making me want to go back to AWL where the whole point was having a child, f your dreams and own goals you only want to make babies and raise 'em till you're dead in the ground.
That aside despite having my immersion stretched for that kind of thing already thanks to Harvest Moon and Rune Factory I'm not sure I'd be able to buy and swallow my character fighting baddies and carrying a baby to term safely.

I hate children and the introduction of prevalent children will sour Bioware in my eyes.

What would be the logic of bringing a little girl/boy on a warship when you have the big Ark ship or a colony for civilians?
Seems reckless and unnecessary.
It also hits all of my Wesley Crusher triggers.

Knowing Arishok, he is definitely trolling big time with this thread!
But I could be wrong of course... although his absence speaks otherwise xD

Asari love interest would also work. No?
Definitely. The spawn is just blue then.

Had to google this, never really watched ST... But yeah, there are many potential problems annoyances and cliches connected to this concept.

Its probably along the lines of there needing to be a point to it besides just sticking a baby item in the inventory, or a toddler npc on the ship if in more modern form.

You know, I've thought about it and...BioWare has developed a very odd habit over the years with DA and ME. Kids usually aren't involved unless they are in (at times) ridiculous amounts of danger and/or otherwise rather broken.
ME1: Tabitha, from the Colonist quest. Granted, she was a young teenager, but I think it still counts.
ME3: Vent Kid/Catalyst
DA:O: Connor. He gets possessed and the player can keep him that way in exchange for gaining access to the blood mage tree.
DA2: The kid from Act II that was a young smuggler. He's been set up and Hawke has to make sure he isn't killed.
Same game: Cricket and whatever his brother's name was. Sorry, it's been a bit. That's the quest when "Cricket", who has a very deep voice for an 11-12 year old, reveals that his guardian had gone insane. Yeah...that turned out to be a mage that lost it and became an abomination.
That's another reason why I am against the PC having kids. You know that the poor kid wouldn't have a ton of screentime, but you can bet your bippy that there would be a long and unneeded sub plot around the kid being in danger somehow. Kidnapped, or a hostage or brainwashed somehow. Nothing personal, but I will pass on that.

People in this forum are just mean and anti-social and don't like(/know about) wider sets of emotions beyond love/hate. Why do they hate kids so much?

It's just sad to see people opposed to healthy family life in this me:a forum.
Having kids in a video game has nothing to do with that.

Really? Okay. I'm bored and sore, so I'll bite.

Echoing this sentiment. I've never had any desire to be a parent, and my boyfriend and I are both firmly child-free. I get inundated with enough "but you have to have kids!" sentiments in real life--I don't need a reminder of that irritation in my escapism.
I think with Mass Effect (and Dragon Age) the family-building elements of roleplay are better suited to fan creations rather than something officially built in-game.

When I was a teenager I never wanted kids and people often said "you'll change you're mind when you get older"
... I'll be 40 this year and it ain't happened yet.

Now there are some things that I don't want in real life that I'm OK with in video games... getting my face eaten by a Xenomorph for instance, but having kids? ... in a video game ... that sounds really, really dull.
And for games, being dull is the worst offence. That's why I always take the god-bothering space racist and leave Kaiden to babysit the bomb.
At least with The Sims you could burn the house down with everyone in it when you got bored (cheap cooker and zero cooking skill).

I have a 3 year old and she is the cutest mccuterson sweetheart pain in the butt ever.
However, I don't think us having kids in a video game is consistent with the feel in Mass Effect. As a "Pathfinder" your'e leaving all you know behind, high up military most likely, on special missions that last years, high chance of death, I see little time for a family there.

Something meaningful should come from romances aside from just sex scenes. We should raise our spawn. You can play football with them and gear them towards being a soldier or do puzzles with them and gear them towards being an engineer. In future titles the things we do with our spawn will directly "effect" their stats and profession for what will become the main character in a future game.
We should have to sleep and eat in the game and during these times there can be minigames to max stats and guide their levels. You also shouldn't be able to perform all tasks needed. Time management is vital as you need to rest 8 hours a day and you can quickly fall behind on tasks.
Obviously having an Asari would be good too and open more doors.
Play The Sims.

Another thought:
a clone or "genetic twin" much younger than your character. Like Miranda and Oriana.

Sounds rather weird and specific, what would be the hook? The role for the clone / sibling?
Same as a child? Someone that depends on the PC?
