I like the Internet-era April Fools where companies come up with silly things just to be silly (and promote themselves). Blizzard's various jokes are always great, especially if you're a long-time player of their games. The McDonald's Mmmbox, Burger King France's Single Fries, Quilted Northern's Artisanal Toilet Paper, various ThinkGeek products, and so on.

One year, ThinkGeek came up with Canned Unicorn Meat and it was so popular that they made it a real product, and have done that with several products over the years.

Not a fan of actual pranks, though.

Plz, no blitzball.

I could never play it again. Running up and down that stupid mountain to get enough cash to buy that weapon for Yuna was exhausting. And if I have to sit through that scene again, I will cringe out of this planet. You know which scene. HA.HA.HA.HA.

I think I'm one of the very few FFX fans that liked that scene. The voice acting was grating, but that was the entire point. When someone is laughing that sarcastically, it sounds forced and fake. Given what Tidus just learned at that point in the game, it makes sense. I'm not defending it, because it is grating and annoying. I enjoyed it in a weird sort of way, but I totally understand why folks got the point but hated the VA deliveries.

Besides, I've heard the Japanese voice dub because I had read it was even worse. ...Tidus sounded like a crow cawing. It was absolutely dreadful.

Also, if you do ever play again, don't bother grinding on the mountain for cash after Yunalesca is dead. Omega Ruins or just capturing monsters nets a higher profit. I made tons just from trying to get certain weapons to drop in the Monster Arena. ;)

To get back this away from FF, my main problem with April Fool's Day is that many times people will take this stuff at face value. Then get offended when they are told that it was just a joke. It was never pretty, but it has gotten so much worse since the internet became ubiquitous in the mid 90s.

Eh people just need to learn to laugh at themselves. I fell for the Bonsai Kitten thing, and even forwarded it to other people! I find it amusing to recall how gullible I was about something that was so absurd.

But yeah, I know that people do react in the way you describe, so I can see how it would be grating for that reason.

This might be the first time I've heard anyone say that. Anyhow, it's not only this scene, there were many instances where either the acting or the writing just didn't work. John DiMaggio was for me one of the few saving graces.

I don't remember the situation, but I was stuck and had to grind in one place, because I couldn't backtrack and a boss fight was coming up. That weapon made the difference between loosing spectacularly and breezing through it. Also, with my backlog being already quite big, I doubt I'll be playing that again.

Getting rather annoyed very quickly of being constantly reminded I need to save up for a car every time I mention something I would like to purchase. I'm aware I need to get a car I'm not going to forget, I don't need to be reminded of it every single time I mention wanting something other than a car. I know it's with good intentions but starting to grate on my nerves a bit. Suggesting that I could get an air mattress if I can't sleep well on my couch doesn't mean that I'll forget that I need to buy a car as well or spend all my money on air mattresses.

Oh look, old MEA footage leaked and BSN, being the bastion of rational thought, has found plenty evidence in it that the game will be garbage. I can practically feel the positive energy. It's like lying in the sun. Or getting radiation poisoning. One or the other.

I know not everyone has to be excited for the game, but I keep seeing the same faces, and spending day after day trying to convince everyone how terrible the game will be must be exhausting.

I misread it as one mattress and through 'that would be one hell of an air mattress.' :P

I only sleep on the most high quality of air, it costs a lot to import you know! I mean if Kanye air goes for 60,000$ (or was it 6,000$?) Just imagine how much lovely Mount Everest air puts you out of pocket.

Sweet maker, I did not know about that. $60,000!

Well you clearly have superior taste and should definitely not settle for lung air to support your sleep! ;)

Good luck with the car. I've sold mine that I got from my grandfather since, well, it was just rust on four wheels :/

In general, I think the thread focuses too much on negativity, even from those on the pro side, which is why I hardly go there. I'd prefer to see more of "I want this," and not, "I want this, and am tired of that, which sucks and is bad."

Sorry to dig this up, but after today, I agree even more with this. Especially since people end up criticising something in a character they don't like and praising the same thing in one they do like :/

I just looked in that thread and it got me wondering: what gay stereotypes does Dorian supposedly embody?

Well there are some things that are popular for gay characters. Stylish, sarcastic, and the whole story with his father. Depending on who you ask, these are small things, or according to some, it ruined his character. But contrary to what some people are writing in that thread, there's no consensus on that.

Plus there is Steve, whom I liked, but some say he's a stereotype.

Glad I've stayed away. Some people act like Dorian is the gayest gay whoever gayed. It's absurd.

Sigh... I really don't understand why that thread must come to that subject again and again. Dorian is not sassy and sarcastic ALL the time. In fact, I'd say that most of his cinematic dialogue is fairly neutral in that regard, even with a non-romanced Inquisitor. And there is a ton of it. His conversational banter, yes, he is in top form for a lot of that, but even then it's not with everything; he does have serious conversations with people, even in the banter.

It's almost as if people and characters can have multiple dimensions and behave differently depending on the situation and according to whomever they are conversing with! Whoda thunk?

And really, as far as being stylish goes, I'd say that is more of a product of his upbringing than anything else, like his appreciation for fine wine and liquor and candied dates.

Sort of related, but not really... I quite wish they would work out the kinks with characters wearing jewelry, like in Skyrim. It would have been fun to see Dorian wearing some like in his romance tarot card, or even his amulet if you help him get it back. I understand that Bull wears his dragon necklace if you give him that, but I think it's only on his Skyhold/unequipped model. Given Dorian's armor, it makes sense for him to wear it underneath his collared shirt, but the rings would have been fun. ;3

People are going to find stereotypes if they're determined to find them, whether or not a character actually is a walking stereotype. There is also a thread about Vivienne being written with racial stereotypes. Dorian and Vivienne are problematic? I mean, seriously?! If I look hard enough I'm sure I could find a similar complaint about Sera. Maybe Blackwall is a poor representation of the bearded community.

Here's my vent: I'd love to jettison both GamerGaters and these whiny wildmill-tilting Tumblrinas into the same gaping maw of a black hole.

The same problem is with Steve. Everyone's acting like there is his dead husband and nothing else. His story makes sense in a world at war, but apparently it's bad, and the gayest gay story ever. Just like with Dorian it doesn't matter that there's a lot more to them. Dorian is the sassy gay with family drama, and Steve is the gay guy with the dead husband. Nothing else...

And apparently no one likes Fenris, Anders, or Dorian. Since you know, Solas is better and all that. TIL!

Concerning armour, do rings and amulets show up on characters? I don't remember. Really would like it to.

(I must remind that I have not played the ME games.) I don't really see how Steve having a dead husband is a gay trope, unless it's meant to be an extension of the "bury your gays" trope. But he is a LI right? So if you romance him then he's not forever alone. I've read that some players feel uncomfortable with the way the romance plays out because of the dead husband, but I don't see how that would be different if it were a woman with a dead husband, or if he were bi and had a dead wife.

Would that have actually been better? For him to have been bi with a dead wife? I know it's set in the future and everything, but I'd have thought that the fact that a gay male character was married to another man, even if he's now dead, would be pretty great progress-wise.

But keep in mind that you have players who say Alistair is "obsessed with cheese" when he only mentions it two or so times, and that Fenris is "an alcoholic" even though we only see him drinking twice and the alcohol is consumed over a period of three years.

Nuance and observation don't seem to be a strong suit of many players. Or, you know, they like to be purposely obtuse just so they can be judgemental dicks.

Rings and amulets have never shown in any of the DA games. The only game I've ever played where that has been the case was Skyrim. I was pretty impressed when I saw that for the first time. (I'm easily impressed...)

And if Solas actually were gay...Whew. If the character seems contentious now, I can just imagine how "problematic" a sly trickster god being gay or bi would be perceived by some of the more aggressively outraged in the fanbase.

I agree, ho boy, BSN would explode. But the person I was arguing with said it would not be a problem, and BW acted wrong and slightly homophobic by not making him bi. Which is a stupid argument...

Well, when it comes to stuff like this I can understand that to a small degree. Imagine if there were no Dorian and the sole m/m gay LI was Solas. I can see that some players would be upset that the gay LI turned out to be a sly trickster god who lies to you for much of the game and will be heavily involved in upcoming conflicts. So it would be, "Can't we just have a nice, normal guy?" And this would be on top of the bi Bull romance and those various issues.

Of course, I consider Dorian to be a nice, normal guy for the most part. He's got issues, most of which are helped tremendously by a (trusting, caring) friendship with the Inquisitor, but he's not deranged or anything.

snip

Apparently people felt there was nothing more to Steve. He is a LI, and I think the whole husband situation was handled respectfully. The fact that he will get better after his husband's death only to (in some cases) start grieving after Shep might not be ok with some players, but then again, this applies to all of the romances (Kaidan and mShep get together only in the last game, and then he might die, that is also uncomfortable).

Steve's marriage was treated very matter of fact and it was an awesome thing, but some people are trying to argue over everything. It was a shame he got introduced so late, but he's a great character. He dislikes clubbing, loves ships and knows everything about them, is a great engineer, is calm and quiet, but also kind. But all of that is not enough, because some other character has different personality traits, and that makes Steve boring...

Yep, purposely obtuse.

Damn, I hope they add it in, it's a nice detail, but adds to the customisation.

Bah minor annoyance with a game I bought, terrible bug where I can't use anything in my inventory, the wiki page on it is pretty bare and the page I found on steam doesn't seem to say anything about this bug either. I've played it too long to return it either so slightly annoying that.

Okay I feel slightly bad now, turns out the game was made by one person and they did put a post up yesterday saying they were still working on it. Still seems like a rather game breaking bug that would be hard to miss but I know nothing about making a game let alone how hard it must be by yourself.

I only played it as a friend but I quite liked Steve's story arc. Ongoing grief of a dead loved one seemed like something a commander might actually have to deal with on a ship in a time of galactic war, and I felt it was played in as relatively understated way.

My main issue with it was the dead husband being from Horizon, because it seems like the entire galaxy spins around that place now.
