I only played it as a friend but I quite liked Steve's story arc. Ongoing grief of a dead loved one seemed like something a commander might actually have to deal with on a ship in a time of galactic war, and I felt it was played in as relatively understated way.

My main issue with it was the dead husband being from Horizon, because it seems like the entire galaxy spins around that place now.

Well said.

The other issue with Horizon, besides too many characters having some kind of link to a small colony world, was that it didn't make much sense for Steve to have a loved on there. He's serving in the Alliance after all, and Horizon was an independent world outside the Alliance's borders. It turned a married couple into not only people living in a long-distance relationship, but one where each half lived in different 'nations.'

I think they used it because it played such a prominent role in ME2

Having Steve's husband killed at Eden Prime instead would have been better, since it was a major Alliance colony, but would have had the same problem of so many characters having a prior connection to it. (Ashley, Jacob, Legion, Javik)

The same problem is with Steve. Everyone's acting like there is his dead husband and nothing else. His story makes sense in a world at war, but apparently it's bad, and the gayest gay story ever. Just like with Dorian it doesn't matter that there's a lot more to them. Dorian is the sassy gay with family drama, and Steve is the gay guy with the dead husband. Nothing else...

I must admit, I didn't like the Steve romance even though I love his character, because it felt like Shepard was taking advantage of someone still clearly grieving for his love one, who'd been gone for less than a year.

Spoiler

This is part of why the friendship path between the two characters in comparison feels far more solid to me, because Shepard is there for him, but doesn't overstep any boundaries.

(Tagged for size, because I have way too many thoughts on the subject it seems)

I agree that it would have been better to have Steve from day one. ME3 had a tight timeline, so all of the characters introduced there (Steve, Samantha, Vega) felt like their arc was rushed (and they lacked interaction with rest of the crew, but that's a different problem). Although it is acknowledged (in the vanilla game at least) that Steve is not yet ready for a full relationship, since we get 'I love yous' in other romances, but not with him.

But I felt in both the romance with Kaidan and Steve that it just had started and it was unfair to leave them with a dead lover. It's not popular, but I like to imagine Kaidan and Steve ending up together after the war, they are pretty compatible. Especially since I prefer synthesis, so Shep is out of the picture.

Anyway, the whole rushed aspect of the m/m romances in 3 has less to do with actual story, and more with the fact that the ME team was so staunchly opposed to a gay romance. Which is a shame, because Steve's romance arc would feel much more satisfying if it was stretched to 2 or 3 games. I said that already, but I'm glad ME is in new hands, after all the BS during ME1 and 2, and because of the cut content for Kaidan and the endless checks for Steve's romance. I'm optimistic that the gay romances in Andromeda will progress far more naturally and I won't have to listen to the project director say how reluctant he was to do it.

I read maybe three posts in the negativity thread and had to NOPE right out of there. I'm like tissue paper.

Ugh, why did I opt back into a 'discussion' that I know full well is not worth it?

Heh, I didn't even finish reading the OP. It would be fine if it was going to be THE negativity thread, but we know it's not. So what's the point?

"Purple hairy manchild Garrett Hawke is the worst Hawke and I hate no PC more than him. 10/10 would toss him to the Nightmare again and again."

Aaand that's enough of that thread. And I thought the entire BSN was a collection of negativity (and character hate) threads, so no need for another one  :P

I loved the OP's attempt at convincing us of their heroic deeds, thinking that the community would condense all of their bitching and hatred into one place. Impossible.
This place thrives off of toxicity.

Pretty much, the MEA board would be empty without it.

More amusing is the fact that the OP thought people here usually keep their negativity to themselves.

I actually ship Steve and Kaidan as well. I could imagine easily those two being friends and forming a relationship during the events of ME3 if unromanced. Seems to me like those two would gravitate to each other, since they have very similar hobbies and personality types.

I also imagine Shepard is probably one of the last to find out, since both are rather private guys and I can't see them as broadcasting it to the rest of the ship. Vega and Garrus would have figured it out way before anyone else though... Vega because he's good friends with Steve, while Garrus' time in C-Sec gave him good detective skills.

Yes! I'm not the only one :P I'm surprised the pairing isn't more popular, they would really be good together. They'd probably bond over tech knowledge, while working on weapon maintenance, and it would go from there.

Shepard of course would be the last to know, all "Steve and Kaidan have been smiling a lot more lately, probably because of the new gear I ordered, yep that's it." Vega would threaten Kaidan, then pull him in a bear hug and start daydreaming about being the best man. Edi would be a total enabler, closing doors and dimming the lights. Ah, shame they didn't do it in the game.

I  tell myself to leave it alone, really I do, but it's just so typical around here. Whenever some people don't like a character, it's like they're desperate to make it appear more than opinion. There must be something objectively wrong with the portrayal, like a stereotype or a dead horse trope.

I'm not saying that accusation can never be made earnestly, but it's still the go to for the dissatisfied anti-fan.

"Oh, my gosh, they're so careful about their __ type of characters, but the __ ones are such a copout." vice versa, etc. Rinse and repeat.

I even hate Vivienne, but ignoring facts about her character just to fit the argument is ridiculous.

I think we might have read the exact same thing, tbh.

It irked me.
