Getting a call from your parent barely being coherent and letting you know they might not be coming over to get their things because they just had to pick a fight with a cop. -_-

Oh I'm fine, I'm currently in that ice cold don't really care any more mode. Jail time might actually do them some good as horrible as that might be to say. I'm more worried about them having to go to the hospital again, but I don't tend to hear about that until weeks or months later anyway.

So yeah I'm fine currently in no Fs to give mode. Sorry for implying otherwise in that^^;

Miscellaneous thing... I really dislike slash pairings. No specifics, I just dislike them in a general sense, no matter who the pairing is.

If anyone here does, I don't begrudge them, it's just not for me.

I've seen the word used in different ways, so I have to ask - does slash apply to fan work of canon m/m pairings or not?

Edit: Forgot the m/m

I always thought that slash referred to m/m pairings but I've only seen that word used on youtube before so I'm probably off with what it actually means.

If you're referring to fanfic pairings I really dislike ones that are not in game canons or in game possibility pairings. Seeing straight characters paired or characters that obviously dislike one another to fit a F/F or M/M ship story yeah, I'm not gonna read that. I'm pretty picky when it comes to fanfics. :P

I didn't know there was more than a single usage? This applies to m/m, f/f, and m/f pairings.

I've understood slash pairings as "slashing together" two (or more, I suppose) people who are NOT canonically a couple -- Harry/Draco, Kirk/Spock, Anders/Fenris, Olivia Benson/Alexandra Cabot (L&O SVU), etc and so on -- or at least characters that haven't shown any attraction.

For the opposite, someone may like the Isabela/Fenris dynamic, or Dorian/Bull. Those are NOT slash pairings because they are established in the canon.

I'm sure there was quite a bit of Mulder/Scully fanfic before they actually became a couple on the show, but the show itself was highly suggestive and intentional with the "will they or won't they?" aspect of it. This is also not slash.

And for one more... I'll bet there is Leliana/Josephine stuff out there as well. Even though their relationship is currently more of a sister dynamic, I think the game leaves it ambiguous as to whether there was a bit more in the past.

A lot of the focus seems to be slashing for the same-sex pairings, but I'm sure the opposite exists as well for canonically gay characters. I'll wager this is especially egregious against lesbian characters being slashed with men, because of course whoever male is just so awesome they were able to turn them.

I just checked a few definitions to be sure, but I'm pretty certain slash refers to same sex pairings (sometimes for differentiation slash is used for m/m and femslash for f/f). https://en.wikipedia...i/Slash_fiction

Or
"Pairings can be het, slash or femslash. They may or may not be canon."

I don't think there's a word for non-canon ship/pairing, which as far as I understand, is the thing you're against. Right now I'm wondering if slash applies to canon gay couples or not, because "ship" does.

For me it's mixed. I dislike things like Fenris/Anders, Harry/Draco, or Dean/Sam. But there are situations, where (and I'm speaking about gay pairings, since that is my "home turf") there is a lot of teasing and nothing comes out of it. Of course YMMV as to what constitutes teasing, but shows like Teen Wolf heavily and evidently teased the viewers, and then showed them the middle finger. In that case I support people doing fan work of non-canon ships.

Aside from a few exceptions, movies, tv shows, and so on, are written for the enjoyment of their consumers. If someone finds enjoyment in creating derivative work from it, no matter how unlikely such scenarios would be (there is no way in hell Anders and Fenris would have anything remotely close to a romantic relationship), I don't see a problem with people doing that. I will scroll over most of such content, but hey, I'll also avoid Bull/Dorian stuff - a canon pairing, and that doesn't mean that someone else cannot find enjoyment in that content. I've fluctuated in my opinion on this, but lately my approach is just "live and let live." There are more important things to dislike about fan work than non-canon pairings (like romanticising domestic abuse [disgusted noise]).

^ Well using "ship" doesn't make sense for a canon pairing either, to be honest. A person "shipping" a pairing is throwing them together when they are not presented as such. Someone might say, "I ship Anders/Nathaniel."

I'm a bit on the fence when it comes to the queer baiting examples, like the one you cite for Teen Wolf. On the one hand, I do agree with you that it can be a way for the fans to work out that unfulfilled promise. On the other hand, the queer baiting itself is the issue, as if the show runners had no intention of ever pairing them off and in their own minds never saw them as a canon pairing. I think such things are a tremendous disservice to the characters, since the relationship development, or lack thereof, is being driven by forces outside of natural character development.

I don't really care what people do, either, but it can veer into the fetishization category, which seems unfortunately common. On the other hand, people do that with established couples as well, so... /shrug.

I think maybe "crack pairing" might describe what you're referring to, where there's not a single hint of romance (or even friendship) between the two characters, but for some reason the person really wants them together. Of course, what does and does not constitute a hint of romance may vary between characters, which is especially common when the characters are close friends (Sam/Frodo comes to mind).

Shipping I think can come into play even with canon romances if there are multiple candidates for the character's affection, even though one canonically wins out in the end. This is pretty common in harem anime or games with multiple romance options.

Yeah I'm also confused by "shipping," because why would you need to ship a pairing if it's canon. It kinda ships itself.

The Teen Wolf example is especially poignant, because unlike stuff like Supernatural, where from what I've heard, the actors were very against it, the TW actors were raving about how much they love that idea and there was that "We're on a ship, pun intended" video. For some reason at one point it changed to being disrespectful to the characters. The Mulder/Scully example is interesting, because if they went through with the idea, Derek/Stiles would be in the same situation. Based on the whims of the writer, something can be either great fan work of a canon shipping, or grasping at straws and seeing what other people don't.

And we're not even mentioning the fact that you could call games with multiple romances a sort of officially endorsed fan fiction. Romances will never be canon outside of your playthrough. The romance can include character growth, but it will never be mirrored in the canon. Of course BW has the Keep to keep the world consistent, but the fact that you can romance Isabela in 2 will not influence her character in the comics. Just like with some shows that do the "will they, won't they" schtick, the writers just leave it ambiguous enough, so you can fit a romance, if you want to.

And just as those Anders/Fenris fics can make me cringe, writers are also guilty of doing stupid crap. The love triangle in Jade Empire was terrible fan service that did not drive character development, and the Zevran/male Warden romance was one of the most crappy gay romances in fiction I've ever seen. There can be well written fan fiction that builds upon or even improves upon some piece of media, and terrible fan work that misreads characters and has nothing but fan service. Both writers and fans can create something good and something bad.

Of course fetishisation is a problem, but that is a whole different minefield.

(sorry for walltexting)

Edit: I do acknowledge that my point of view may be skewed, because queerbaiting exists and fan fiction can be about viewers not taking sh*t from the writers. I can't hold it against fans that they shape characters to their own wishes if sometimes even the writers cannot do those characters justice.

Trying to find a bust binder is more confusing than I thought it would be, trying to get a cosplay together that kind of requires one since I'll be dressing as a male but dang are some of the sizes confusing somewhat, though probably just me not really understanding it.

Huldra, you should google it, there are a lot of websites (mostly for FTM folks) that have tips about sizes and safety concerns. (Do NOT use bandages)

And who will you be cosplaying as, if I may ask?

You would be surprised how many times I've heard tape being suggested actually. Sports bras taped down is the most common one

I have been skimming around but mostly on the safety of it and trying to find something not too bulky so it'll fit under the clothes without looking odd. Currently looking at amazon for price and sizes just a little worried it might not work for a bigger bust like mine.

A webcomic character that goes by Parent. If I can get everything I want for it I plan to go the whole nine yards and make it black and white as well since that's the style of the comic.

Should be pretty easy to stop them in that strip they're the one who isn't a child.

EDIT: I would like to add also that a lot of people seem kind of split on the character, I may be wrong but I personally just take them to be a cross dresser. Just tossing that out since a lot of people seem split on what they see the character being.

I find bandages being okay if you don't happen to have anything better- have been mostly using that myself- but there is some possible dangers in that so not recommended option for sure. Duck tape is worse.. and plastic wrap worser since they don't move nor breathe. I have heard people using those too ^^; But proper binder is best of course.

I like the art of the comic. I think the thing that's throwing people is the parent's mustache. I mean, of course anyone can appreciate facial hair, others' as well as their own, and want to grow it, but that just doesn't seem like it would be typical of a transwoman.

And I really want to know now... Why shouldn't bandages be used? I'm assuming this is referring to ACE bandages and the like for sprained ankles and such.

I really enjoy the comic it's kind of slow with updates but given how much is in each strip that makes sense and its one of the few gory things I actually really enjoy. Nice style and imo pretty damn good characters.

There was and still kind of is a lot of controversy over the character in the first place, that link has the character reedited when before it was more of the character thinking he was the dead wife but the author changed that down the road.  The lack of the character using female pronouns for themself and the mustache kind of what lead me to believe the character is a cross dresser which is why I tend to use male pronouns sometimes for the character.

From what I read using bandages can cause tissue damage pretty easily, I haven't tried chest binding before and I've only read it on a few sites so I'm not sure, I'd just rather be safe than sorry.

I don't know much about that, but I've read that hacking your own solution is usually not recommended, because you can hurt yourself that way. Just look specifically for binders, when you find one, go to their website and check their sizes. For example I found something like this.

Anyway, good luck with the costume, it seems like an interesting idea :)

From the trans content I've seen, I heard about serious scarring, trouble with breathing, fluid build up in the lungs, and in some cases even broken ribs. Of course you could do it just right and be ok, but it's a risk.

Thanks I think pulling off the black and white thing will be the most difficult since I've only found that dress in red and white so far, I suppose o could dye the stripes but not 100% sure how to do that without it bleeding all over into the white part of the dress.
