I'm sometimes really proud of myself for foregoing the finish, "you condescending nitwit," in a few of my response posts. Today was one of those days.

I really wanted to reply to that "gut feeling" post with something like, "Perhaps you need some probiotics," but I dislike being snarky, as I think it's not productive.

Eh, might as well vent here. I dated someone that was transgendered, M to F. At the time, "David" called himself by a male pronoun and male name, but he was just starting the process. Despite the lack of surgery (which he was getting started on) and despite him (and me) going by a male pronoun, he was still a woman. I'm hoping I can find "Desiree" (the name she became when she finished transitioning,) on facebook soon. I didn't see a transgendered person, I saw a person I wanted to date. It didn't last long, since he went to Texas to continue his transition. I wished him well and I hope life's treating her well. If I seem a little loose with my pronouns, it's because he still called himself by a male name and a male pronoun when he still lived in my town, but she's completed her transition since then.

You actually wrote it quite well, and I was able to follow along with your intention regarding the pronouns for before and after. :D

The folks that are making such comments have probably never met a transgendered person in their life. DA is fantasy, ME is science-fantasy. A transgendered LI is too far apparently. Either it won't matter in the future since everyone can "pass," or it didn't exist. The latter makes me sadly chuckle, because surgery and modern medicine didn't create transgendered folks. Give me a break.

Here's the thing with this... Not counting the internet, I have met very few gay folks (that I'm aware of) in my life, had a gay friend in HS, and only encountered one trans person that I'm aware of (they're a checkout person at my local Walgreens). But I don't need to have known these people to not be an a-hole about their very existence.

I find the attitude of certain majority folks, that of, "I'm tolerant as long as I don't have to encounter these people," which is what you see in many of these threads, to be almost worst than open bigotry because those people like to pretend that they're not and pat themselves on the back for it.

And only somewhat related, I've found that many of these people have a really narrow view of what it means to be a heterosexual, and more particularly the types of sex that they get up to, and anything deviating from that is not heterosexual. It's lame, idiotic, and all sorts of various adjectives.

Been reading that ME:A thread on realistic female body types or some **** like that.

It's led me to believe that many people on this site have never done anything remotely athletic in their lives.

I narrowly avoided it myself, but probably made it clear in the subtext.

Why did I venture into that thread? *sighs* :?

^ That's not what I'm saying. I am referring to the irrational fear that she will replace a female LI for straight men. That is absurd.

Doesn't that depend on perspective? Sidestepping philosophical discussions about what counts as a female LI for straight men, there's only so many romances in a game and if she's one then that's a hypothetical romance slot that could have been used elsewhere.

What I find silly is the expectation that romance options are appealing, after everything has been done to provide a broad set of options.

Some people seem to have a funny idea of what qualifies as anorexic as well.

Anorexic, realistic, muscular, someone with skinny arms being capable of winning a fist fight.

Honestly, some people just seem to have funny ideas on bodies in general.

^ Perhaps those are people with a only a very vague understanding of physical fitness, themselves.

I just don't get the extremes people adopt so easily. When I was saying that not all members of military are "ripped," I was repeatedly interpreted as saying they're out of shape. When I was acknowledging that they're mostly athletic, I was actually accused of assuming they're all Hollywood hyper muscular, which was an assumption I had been arguing against the entire time.

Come on now, let's not pretend that those players aren't referring to a cis woman, with XX chromosomes, who was born a woman, presents as a woman, and has the genitals of a woman. As I said several times in that thread, there is NO reason whatsoever to think that Bioware will not present those players with, at the very least, the same two options that they have had in every single game. Fearing anything else, or that one of those options will be taken away, is nothing beyond paranoia.

Also, the idea that Bioware would do that just to "send a message" -- an idea suggested in that thread -- is akin to attributing a malicious slant to their stance of inclusivity.

Yepper. I used to live in Miami, which is the base for SOUTHCOM. Because of the nice weather, we would occasionally see the guys running, shirtless, in shorts... *_*... Erm, anyway, my point is that none of the guys I saw were ever like Wolverine or anything like that; very fit and muscular, of course, but nothing so very extreme. I'm sure there are military guys who spend the extra time to get so very ripped, because they're into that for themselves, but that does take time and specific training outside of the normal military physical training to achieve. That some people think these guys and gals don't have anything else to do is somewhat laughable.

I actually thought that the human male form in DAI was pretty good and do like it as a baseline for the warrior body, which my guy is. In comparison, the overly sculpted form in DAO seemed a bit silly, then again, so too was the female form with her shelf-boobs. Sadly, I can't make a human (my preference) male mage because they're just too muscular. Dorian looks great and everything, and that's fine for him, but I prefer a bit leaner aesthetic for my own mage. Also, the armor choice adds or detracts from the musculature. While Dorian looks well proportioned in his armor, the human male mage Inquisitor still looks like he lifts while studying runes or something and that is because of the armor design. The left arm bulge on the male Hawke mage Champion armor was ridiculous.

It's interesting to see how physical standards of muscularity, particularly for actors, have changed over the years. One of the better examples is Kirk Douglas in Spartacus. No one of the day would have looked at him in that film and thought his form was unrealistic for a gladiator slave, but they would today.

I agree with your post, but it would be unlike me not to disagree on this :P

Even the sleeveless jackets gave Hawke and Carver huge arms. I just accepted fanon ideas (they did a lot of farm work, he helped Carver practice sword fighting), and enjoyed the view ;)

Or as mentioned here, Hawke looked more husky (and his arms were more matching) in Inquisition, because Varric exaggerated his appearance in 2 for the Tale of the Champion.

Between embellishing Bethany's chest-size in the fake prologue and having male Mage Hawke selling tickets to the gun show, I kind of wonder if Carver's appearance was also exaggerated in the book or he really does have a Matt Smith-esque lantern jaw?

Attempting to adjust my sleep schedule in one day, so far I've needed several cups of coffee and an energy drink and still have about an hour to go to make it to the time my new shift would end. As much  of a night owl I am, I don't think I'm going to do that well on the graveyard shift. Maybe I should of applied for something other than late night clean up.

Haha maybe! The first thing I thought when I saw his face was "that's so angular"  :D

And now I can't stop thinking about Hawke actually selling tickets to the gun show. Maybe they need money for the clinic or guard and he's saying all giddy "I have an idea!"

My male mage Hawke definitely did push-ups every morning with Fenris sitting on his back. Also, totally headcanoned that Fenris was reading books while he sat on Hawke's back.

Mine bench pressed templars. Cullen ignored that he's a mage, so Hawke would leave, before he got an idea to bench press him too.

Edit:

My 1000th post is, of course, about Hawke.

Spoiler

"Relax, I've brought the Inquisitor... (and the gun show!)"

After being told by Seneschal Bran to cover up because his rippling biceps were distracting visiting dignitaries and Chantry leaders... the Male Mage Hawke responded by ripping one sleeve off, pointing out that technically he wasn't showing off his biceps anymore, since there was only one on display. True Story.

He was then seen going to the clinic.

H: Anders! I need a doctor!

A: What happened, Ha-

H: Because these pythons are sick! *flexes*

A: ...

H: ^o^

He's banned from the chantry for corrupting the faithful with his displays (and because Elthina couldn't stand the puns).

Yeah, that was something that I wasn't expecting after not much sleep. I spent over two hours today doing yardwork and woke up to a hailstorm. I like some of the people here obviously, but I see derails like the one in that thread and I remember why I don't post as much as I used to. I do like some of your posts though.
