^ Oh... so I looked over the point the person is making, and I can understand it to a degree. They are referring to an explicit sex scene, which rather makes sense, particularly in an RPG. If a full-on sex scene is shown, the player has no agency, they are forced to watch as their character does whatever, even if they don't feel that is accurate to their role-play.

This is the reason I'm happy that the sex references with Dorian are vague, particularly with the absurd focus on tops/bottoms that some people have  . This leaves the player free to interpret scenes and lines in any way they wish and head-canon the sex however they want. If you reference a specific line for that romance that supposedly proves he is one way or another, I will argue against it.

And you know, how people approach sex is also a part of their personality and reflective of the relationship (if there is one). The only game scenario that I fully wrote out in my fanfic writing was a "fill in the blank" for the Inquisitor x Dorian sex scene. While writing the sex was fun, the more important parts for me were the thoughts and feelings behind the scene, particularly since the post-sex dialogue is rather intense and emotional.

So, because the player has no agency, I can see how someone might feel like watching a sex scene is voyeuristic. I prefer the DAI method. It's obvious they just had sex, I really don't think we need to see it and remind everyone of the supreme awkwardness of the DAO sex scenes -- we saw our Warden's O face! I also didn't mind DA2's method, but I think DAI was a good balance between the two.

I was very happy to have romances in DAI that did not all have sex scenes, but had scenes or dialogue that the player could interpret that, hey, your inquisitor had sex. Solas romance is one of those where the dialogue and cut scenes are left up to the player to decide if they did or did not.

Back to your regularly scheduled ranting.

I'm not a fan of the romance arcs where it is left ambiguous whether or not characters who are romantically involved are also physically intimate. With Josephine's arc in DA:I for example, I'd much rather the writers either had her declare that she was waiting until marriage, or gave her a romance scene with the Inquisitor that left no room for ambiguity.

Ambiguity is fine with some book or film characters, but it just doesn't work with a video game protagonist that the player controls.

Yeah i'm really not a fan of ambiguity in this area either.

A+ for spoiler avoidance, but I'll have to be a bit more explicit with my reply. xD

The above are the ONLY objective facts about this issue.

I am of two minds regarding this. I don't mind a certain kind of ambiguity, as I stated in my post, but I DO want to know whether they did in fact have sex.

I also thought that the option to refuse and still continue the romance, unique to Dorian's romance, was a fantastic addition, particularly in how each scene plays out differently and adds a different flavor to the romance. There is a tremendous amount of role-play variation there, with multiple paths, and I think they need to do more of this for all of the romance arcs.

Random question for those who have seen Deadpool...

David Gaider tweeted: "Today is International Women's Day. Having seen Deadpool, this summons mental images it certainly did not last year."

I probably won't be seeing the movie anytime soon, if I see it at all (this whole extended MCU movie thing is irksome and I feel like I have to watch ALL THE THINGS to know wtf is going on, so I gave up). But I'd like to know the reference, particularly since various people responded that they got it.

Of course :)

I guess all we can do is wait and see. I just hope they say something about the protagonist, when they announce DA4 (I suspect somewhere after September?), because all of those threads about the IQ are on their way to become equally annoying as those about the HoF.

It's about last thing in your spoiler. Deadpool is not MCU movie actually- 20th century fox owns of bunch of Marvel characters DP included so he's part of X-men universe. His movie is not connected to older X-men movies either so you can watch it without having any knowledge of MCU nor X-men movies.

well I had dinner plans with a friend and they fell through and we both got snappy with each other and had a short fight that is only quasi-resolved.

So that was a fun way to spend the day.

I hate it when little things become big sources of tension like that.

I really hate the name "Hero of Ferelden". As a title it makes no sense and in world we have the much better Warden Commander. I cringe a little bit every time I hear it.

The title is because the warden PC primarily saved Ferelden, as the game states that Ferelden was the only nation impacted by the Blight, which had barely begun by the time the Archdemon was killed. Also, not every warden PC became the Warden Commander; those who died. It also serves to distinguish the warden PC from other wardens of note.

The problem is that I can only see that title as being used in your list of titles, not as a stand in for your name on most occasions. Warden Commander Tabris, Arl of Amaranthine, Hero of Ferelden, Savior of that city I've forgotten the name of, so on.

My preference would be Warden / Warden Commander (Surname) as all that could be gleaned from plot flags easily. Warden Commander (or The Warden) I guess would be the shorthand. There's actually not that many times it comes up in dialogue so I feel they could splash for the divergence given the significance and all.

It depends on context obviously but what I'm getting at is there are more names you can knowingly voice and are fitting that what they went with.

I second that 'Hero of Ferelden' sounds silly, and it especially makes no sense if Alistair or Loghain died killing the Archdemon. I get that you were the leader and so you get the credit, but it still irks me. Even 'Champion of Kirkwall' is only mildly better. I think I prefer more formal titles, like Warden(-Commander) or Inquisitor.

Makes you wonder what they'll go for in the next game?

My Aunt is really frustrating sometimes.

She comes down and stays with me in Napa often, sometimes with as little as a one day warning, and then she'll leave in an indeterminate length of time.

I tell her almost a month in advance that I'm hoping to come stay with her in San Francisco for about a week in mid march, and she assures me that it's great, that she'll be happy to see me. Then she completely forgets and offers her place for her friends to stay overnight. When I text with the details of the exact day and time I'm coming over about a week ahead of time, it's, "You didn't give it to me in writing, or give me the details so that I can plan my life."

Okay, I just did, but alright. I'm sorry this I didn't follow this new schedule visits in writing rule we just established--which I'm confident will be repealed the next time you want to come stay with me.

So, she insists on getting me a hotel room for that night, which is very kind of her, but then she makes resentful remarks off and on depending on her mood. One of the most generous people I know one minute, and the most likely to hold it against you for years the next.

She's one of those people that you sometimes have to walk on eggshells with, and be very careful of her current temperament. She might be cheerful one moment, and tempestuous the next. Her own feelings are tremendously sensitive, but she usually seems completely unaware that feelings are a thing other people even have.

And her friends drank my wine.

Yikes well at least it'll hardly get boring? Dealing with people like that can be pretty touch (heck that's pretty much my entire father's side of the family)  Sorry you're going through that Lady A. Hopefully things will smooth out soon? At least it sounds like you're keeping rather calm about it, I'd be taking blood by then in your shoes.

Your aunt sounds like my boss, especially the 'walking on eggshells' bit, but excepting the wine-drinking, because she doesn't drink maybe she should

I'm sorry about your aunt, Lady A. :( No offense intended, but she sounds a bit two-faced... and that's not fun to deal with. After all, you never know who you're dealing with!

In other news, it's my birthday and I'm drunk! Does that count as venting?

Happy birthday Gomez!
Always enjoyed your posts.

@Arty: your aunt reminds me of various family members I have. There's actually this genetic on my mother's side, where for example, they will offer to do something kind and then turn around and throw it in your face to guilt trip you  not sure if it's the same thing, but thats what your vent reminded me of.

That's exactly what it's like.

Growing up, she was always the cool aunt from the city who gave me the most chic and expensive presents. Which is great, absolutely nothing to complain about. But she's also prone to resentment, and she's very particular about the gifts we give her...If she's dissatisfied, she'll hold it against you forever.

It doesn't help that our family dynamic is complicated to begin with. I was raised by my grandmother, her mother (we call her Gigi). Gigi was an irresponsible parent, and a drug user through my aunt's childhood, but she got it together and quit the drugs by the time she started raising me. She had a bad childhood and I had a good one, even though we were raised by the same person. She's understandably resentful, but she also builds up the reality of the situation as different from what the evidence suggests.

For example, my Grandfather had no regular job throughout her childhood and by everyone else's account was more neglectful than Gigi was, but Teisha blames it all on Gigi. She'd probably canonize Grandpa as a saint if she could, but the guy I know was an eccentric, extreme hoarder with no reliability at all who managed to thoroughly alienate his other children into estrangement.

It's just all so messy sometimes, and I wish it were simpler.

edit: Sorry for the info dump. That was a bit much.

And never worry about 'oversharing', Lady A. If you can't vent here, where can you vent? Families are complicated. And messy. And... eugh, let me just say that I understand you completely, and I'd be far more articulate were I sober! But I feel you, amigo.

Seems to me like it's a psychological issue.

We're all shaped by our environments, how we're raised, how we're treated, etc.

And don't sweat it :) I like you, so I don't mind if you wanna discuss personal issues.
