Even, if we were supposed to "atone" for the stupid crap our ancestors did (of course we're not), the notion that 100% of white people were slave owning colonists is just logistically impossible. I come from a country that never had colonies, great grands from my mother's side are from another country with no colonies (neither for lack of trying, mind you). And judging by my surname and my father's looks, his side originated from India (he enjoyed his share of "random" airport checks, especially when he had a beard). But as far as I can tell, no slavery.

That's not to say that my 15x great grandfather never thought darker skin tone is bad, or that my 10x great grandmother never threw holy water at some men she caught kissing. But who cares? The only thing they could have passed down to me are some predispositions for illnesses. Their actions have not influenced the way I see the world in any way. People who think genetic memory is a real thing need to be reminded that Assassin's Creed is not a scientific source of knowledge.

I'm responsible for who I am, not some farmer from the 14. century.

It's not?!

Also somewhat related, I think they sort of missed the point with the upcoming AC movie in having Michael Fassbender play both parts. To me, one of the more interesting things about the series is that you are a completely different person in each timeline.

How grand it would be - "Children, turn to page 78, today we're going to learn about that time Ezio punched a pope in the face." :D

The first AC also had some similar errors - they gave Altair an American accent... They tried to give Desmond some similarities to Altair and Ezio with the lip scar, but the movie took it too far.

And that might not be the biggest problem of the film. The first AC was fun because of the Animus parts, not the modern day scenes. The movie is said to have the vast majority of scenes take part in the present day.

Reminds me of that Spike quote from Buffy;

"You won, alright. You came in and you killed them and you took their land. That's what conquering nations do. It's what Caesar did. And he didn't go around saying, 'I came, I saw... I felt really bad about it'".

It's a somewhat callous look at history, but it's fundamentally true.

No-one should feel guilt over something our ancestors may or may not have done in the past, since we have no say or influence over what their actions were, good or bad. It'd be as ludicrous as apologising for something that our potential descendants might do, because how does that have anything to do with us here in the present?

That is not to say that no-one should pretend that history was perfect and people didn't kill each other over stupid, petty and for downright awful reasons. But as long as we acknowledge (and never deny) the mistakes of the past and try to avoid repeating them both in the present and in the future, then we shouldn't feel the burden of shame for what other people far removed from us in time did.

I swear I keep getting signs to quit this job, second day car wreck then missing two days after that. First day back and my old surgery wound decides to reopen despite being closed for about a month now. So that's going to be fun to handle on Thursday, working and wound dressing without raising suspicion of security or the head EMT I annoyed last time by mistake.

Yeah it's a minor wound it's just in an area that gets a lot of movement so the bandages need to be changed regularly. As soon as I get a new doctor (mine suddenly quit) I'll ask them about it. It does hurt but imo it's just more annoying than anything. Mostly just drained from all this stuff happening in a row. I think I'll be fine though thank you :)

I'm from England so... where would I even begin if I had to "atone" for any misdeeds of my ancestors individually or those conducted by my nation or countrymen over the past thousand years?

I think the most we can offer is to acknowledge and accept we engaged in a lot of conduct unbecoming during the height of the British Empire, as well as offer sincere apologies towards those in the world whom endured such caddish, rakish and all around abysmal behaviour.

Besides, for those who even care about "atonement", doesn't English being forever known as the default accent for most bad guys in movies qualify as penance enough?

Happy Hurricane Season! And yes, I did say this when I still lived in Miami, and I lived through two hurricanes and some tropical storms.

Anyone here live in potential danger zones?

For hurricanes, not really. Depending on the path of the storm I'll get rain and a bunch of clouds.

nah, I might have an alt :bandit: but Byne used to be pretty active here on the forums, he helped start up the IT stuff after ME3, and I spend as much time in the chatbox for his forum as I do here

I'm sorry about the rant yesterday. I'm actually pretty embarrassed by that and I hope I didn't offend anyone. I'd hide it, except it's already been quoted more than once.

I double checked and no one has quoted it. It's hidden now. I think that came off in poor taste.

Edit: I think I need to step back from the forums before I lodge my foot any further down my throat.

It's just been an off week. Last week, we got a notice from the city because our weeds were too high. We've had a lot of rain in the last couple of weeks and it makes it hard to do yard work. We've got most of that knocked out. However, my husband decided to cut down a dead olive tree in our backyard. Not a problem...except he didn't think about how to dispose of it. We've got a tree guy coming out tomorrow, but it's still stressful.

We've got some black mold, thanks to a flood in the bathroom by the previous tenant. So we've got mold mitgation to do. Plus, our house was built in the late 1970s and the electricty isn't up to code. That's even more money and while we can afford it, those two things have to get done in the next week or two. Spring can't end soon enough.

As a good friend pointed out, I'm probably overthinking things. I think my own stress colored my perception of my post. I'll think I'll chill for a bit. Play FFX-2 (still playing it for the bonus content) and fire up some TOR with my husband this weekend. E3 is 13 days away. By then, maybe the forums won't be such a god awful echo chamber.

So, apparently marriage kills men and "old" (40+) women are like spoiled milk... Andraste's dirty socks, EA play can't come soon enough. I cannot count how many times these last few days I've seen people claim to be omniscient (or rather clairvoyant). Yes, now I will describe this thing I have never experienced, but know everything about!

In related news, I've finally added some people to the ignore list.
