Alrighty y'all my official vent for today is that last night at 1:30 in the morning a bug CRAWLED INTO MY EAR AND TRIED TO EAT MY BRAIN. IT WAS AGONY. DO NOT RECOMMEND.

Can you prove that it didn't and you're not some brainless Vertigomez puppet for a brain eating bug?

Speaking of annoying insects, my dog has been getting covered in fleas Everytime I take him out to walk. We've been spraying him and getting stuff for it, but there's just no end to them.

Minor vent: I've replaced my HDD in my laptop with an SSD. It's really made a difference (installing games from Origin used to lock the entire thing, now it's not even using 3%). That will probably help with those Inquisition load times.

But the vent is that I really dislike Windows 10. It installed by itself Candy Crush saga, twitter, Flipboard, and others. The privacy settings and the default apps keep resetting. OneDrive is just impossible to kill. Oh, and the translations (it's the "family laptop," so I can't just go with English) are just atrocious. For example, Insider Hub got translated as "The centre for non-disclosed application testing." Ugh. And my bluetooth got magically fixed, only to start cutting the connection with my mouse every 30 seconds. 0/10 would not recommend.

You can uninstall many of those pre-installed apps. The only things you can't uninstall totally are:

Alarms & Clock
Calculator
Camera
Groove Music
Mail and Calendar
Maps
Movies & TV
OneNote
People
Phone
Photos
Store
Voice Recorder
Weather
Xbox

All of that other stupid crap can be installed through the start menu. I just stopped OneDrive from starting with Windows. I also disable Cortana. Both of those are integrated into the OS, so you can't get rid of them completely.

Did you do a fresh installation after activating the upgrade?

You actually can get rid of them, either through a powershell command (just don't uninstall the store) or by using ccleaner's uninstaller. The only ones that really have to stay are feedback, help, and Edge. You can supposedly get rid of the onedrive icon from the explorer sidebar, but it always comes back for me.

Which doesn't change the fact that MS is installing 3rd party apps, and I'm really not ok with that. It's just annoying that a clean install makes me spend time removing software.

I installed 10, when it came out as an upgrade, did a fresh install a while ago, and now I installed in on the empty new drive.

Holy. ****. Skyhold loaded in under 10 seconds! It used to take at least 4 minutes. I think I've made a good choice

Do you have the urge to hijack the starship Reliant or assassinate James T. Kirk? If the answer to either of those questions is yes, then you might be under the influence of Ceti Eels.

Khaaaaaaaan! :pinched:

Windows has been always like that, installing stuff without consent. I got McAfee security trial for both laptop and PC for Windows 8- and it can't be even be fully uninstalled without downloading McAfee's own uninstaller. What's even worse was that it was eating all processing power of my laptop, CPU usage close to 100% all the time which made it run very poorly. I had so much problems when I got my new laptop and PC at last summer really, had to uninstall bunch of preinstalled stuff so they could work, had to install Avast cause Window's own security system doesn't work- problems with digital signature in both and laptop even has faulty software updates that makes touch mouse not work at all.

I just hate Windows and how broken it can be with stuff.

^That's more the OEMs that install it than Microsoft, but it's still a nuisance. It gets even better - Lenovo spoofed certificates at one point to direct every user through their ad servers, and they've made it super easy for a user to get hacked and have their, for example, bank login and data stolen. (You can check for some of the fake certificates here)

Usually a clean install with an ISO from MS solves everything (you have to hunt for the drivers yourself, but it's a small price for getting rid of the antivirus software), but some have software that survives even that (again, Lenovo).

I have an old iMac and macOS has been fantastic for both programming and everyday stuff. Because of crap like this, I never want to switch back (even though I have to use Windows every now and then). Now if Apple would bother updating their computers...

<pops in>

I have a rant and a cautionary tale for you guys. I finished up Saints Row 4 and the expac. I was in the mood for more of that gameplay and humor, so I rented Saints Row 3 on the PS4. For those that don't know, the PS4 has a streaming service for PS3 games. I do own it on the PS3, but it's dying. Let me put it this way: The last time I tried to fire up a game, it sounded like a hair dryer about 20 mins after I started playing. We can get a new one for ~$200 or so, but that's low on the list of priorities at the moment.

Anyway, it was $30 for 90 days. I figured why not and gave it a whirl. That was a mistake. It's smooth only about half the time. There is stuttering and such even with the best connection, and several times this week it's been out and outright unplayable. There is no downloading, just streaming. I have a damned good internet speed and everything is set up the way it should be. It's just a wonky piece of technology that's more or less in Beta still.

Edit: The service is called Playstation Now.

Stay away from that service if at all possible. Total waste of money, and you'd have an easier and cheaper time renting the console and/or buying the game and PS3.

Oh and screw the 4th of July. My terrier is in panic mode thanks to our neighbors. Fireworks are illegal here but that doesn't stop anyone from lighting off the big fireworks. She's getting doped up, but it's gonna be a long night. :P

Sorry @Nat having a scared puppy can make for a long night. Had the same thing happen with my previous puppy, he was scared to death of fireworks and storms. I'm thankful that the dogs I have now are oblivious to fireworks and storms. Of course now that I've said that they will probably want to prove me wrong. :)

Edit: for you @steelcam, they are illegal where I'm from also, St. Louis County but they are legal across the river in St. Charles and make their way back home. Although they are illegal the police don't enforce the law. When I was younger I may or may not have broken the law.

I know some places like Louisiana have them illegal for most of the year but they can be sold by licensed vendors for the 4th and New Years.

Here in some areas the houses are so close together it can be a bit dangerous, one year my parents next door neighbors house caught on fire from the fireworks.

Louisiana, good memories. When I was in school we went to Florida for spring break and we visited New Orleans on the way. Fun times for a group of college students. The hurricane's were going down a little too easily, massive headache in the morning but it didn't stop me from having another hurricane for the drive to Florida. Been to Shreveport for a bowl game also.

Oh crap, just triggered a memory from Florida, was minding my own business and one of the girls decided to take off her bathing suit top to show me her tan line. I did NOTHING to encourage it but still it didn't go over well with my girlfriend and future wife, it was a long night. Yikes! Crazy trip!

For maybe the second or third time in my history on this site, I hid one of my own topics. My three largest concerns thread. I knew it was risky starting a topic with a slightly more negative tone than I usually do, but the rate it degenerated into a debate about SJWs was staggering.

Aside from general safety, don't forget that some areas are prone to wildfires.

I don't understand why everything has to degenerate into a debate about SJWs. Out of curiosity, briefly, what were your three largest concerns?

There's an update in the old 'Gaider is leaving' thread with more ranting about feminazis. We need a version of Godwin's law, but with reductio ad feminazium instead of Nazism. With every single post, the probability of someone mentioning SJWs or feminists approaches 1.

With the general tone of the board, it was sadly inevitable.

Sadly, I can actually see the reasoning in the DG thread, since there are people who blame him for tainting DA with all that SJW nonsense, and that apparently if he hadn't been there we would never have any of that throat-shoving down of things like bi and gay people. Never mind the fact that David Gaider was not the sole arbiter of all of those decisions, neither did he have the final say, and that the general attitude of the EA parent company is one of inclusiveness.

Speaking of DG... only today did I realize that one of the criticisms concerning Dorian (being a sassy gay man) is made even more ridiculous when you consider that ALL of the major characters -- straight, gay, bi, male, female, non-gendered (Shale) -- written by DG have been, or at least been able to throw out a heavy dose of snark when called upon. The only exception is Cassandra, and she makes up for it by being grumpy, with her own brand of subtle sass thrown in. It's what the man does with characters.

I think in Dragon Age's case you can to a point plot a progressively more Social Justice Warrioriness in the series, and that possibly warrants criticism (as in critical discussion). Though referring to it as such is counter-productively ineloquent. It's also apparently the direction of the team as a whole.

(...) and that apparently if he hadn't been there we would never have any of that throat-shoving down of things like bi and gay people.

Heh heh heh.

There are two things that make me leave a discussion or just not take part of it at all, thats SJW and Mary Sue. If anyone mentions either of those two terms, nope! Though i would like to talk about Bioware and social justice, but with reasonable people.

I did suggest to some of those "SJW" topic starters to make one about Mass Effect Andromeda and PC culture, but they didn't do so, which is a shame.

So uh, it turns out that the creature that crawled into my ear and tried to possess me was a FLY and the reason I was in such brain-piercing, butt-numbing agony was because the little bastard was flouncing around ON MY EAR DRUM. Euughhhh. I do not know how, I do not know why. I really don't want to know.

The only thing I do know is that it cost me $680 to have it removed. 'Merica! :wizard:
