Honestly, don't worry about it (and technically, I was the one, who made a post about that thread first). I thought I'd care about my first warning point, but the only annoying thing is that it says "1 warning points," and OMG BW, it would take literally 3 short lines of code to fix it. I'm honestly hoping for a second one, so I won't be greeted by a grammatical error every time I post  :P

That is the only thing that I liked about getting my second warning point. Seeing the '1 warning points' bothered me so much.

Eewwww. Sounds muggy.

I'm moving to Antarctica. You all may call me the Penguin Queen, last of my kind.

I've always said I'm migrating south for the summer.

This is my fault guys, and I'm sorry. I know that there's a poster keeping a close eye on us and I still vented about them anyway.

I am not going to be this careless again.

Well I am. What's the point of venting if you can't be a bit careless here and there? ;)  Also, you're like 14th down on the list of people I'd blame for this.

Believing that isn't just about fantasy, though. People with ginormous egos like that don't confine the behavior to private fantasy. Those are the same ones who actually say to lesbians that they just haven't had the right man yet. Just... ugh.

It doesn't even seem to be a ginormous ego thing in this case. More of an awful-at-interpreting-social-cues thing. Because the given explanation in this case isn't "I think I/Commander Shepard would be able to attract this declared lesbian with my/his manly ways." It's "I think this declared lesbian is *actually* homoflexible and wants me to hit on her based on the fact that she completely ignored me as she hurried giddily over to a hot tub." It's like, nah dude, she just likes hot tubs.

I swear every thread devolves into a Sera hatefest sooner or later. I'm having flashbacks to the DA2 subforum circa 2011... s-so much Anders and Sebastian [word that rhymes with spank]! Mages, templars! RAAAUUGHH!

That's my p*** and moan for the day.

Well now I'm just feeling really thick-headed. I still don't get it.

******, crank, spank, yank... none of those also indicate whining.

[edit]
W**k is not a synonym for whining...

[edit2]
It occurs to me you might have written w**ker, but that is just basically a jerk (listed after the "person who masturbates" definition).  According to dictionary.com, anyway. But that does fit some of those people, and Sera would approve, so...

It can be when used in the phrase "w4nk off about." Although I guess it's more of a general "talk on and on about."

Wanker would be the Commonwealth equivalent of jerk-off.
Tosser is also an acceptable replacement.

Yeah, I was using it in the context of fan w@nk. So, maybe less whining and more like...... I don't even know. The kind of endless blurgh that happens when someone brings up a divisive character and the thread goes on for fifty pages.

Sorry for the confusion.

I think self indulgence is the concept in that case.

I got it after this post, but I'm glad I'm not the only one, who didn't guess it immediately

And I didn't know Vivienne's fandom grew so much  ;)

When I go to bars, I try so hard to seem relaxed that my smile looks like I'm in physical pain. WHY am I so socially awkward? I wish I had enough confidence (aka DGAFness) to go up and talk to random groups of people. Or dance.

I think self indulgence is the concept in that case.

Yeah, that works.

Indulge in the other services of the bar til you feel that you can go up and talk to them!

I give great advice

So, my beef with this isn't with showcasing a minority character--not in the slightest--but rather in the fact that this seems like a hollow effort at doing so.

This is taking an established character, who in most people's minds is still a rich white guy, and trying to drop a minority character into that slot. I think it's similar to what we were talking about in the "what I learned today," thread about Sulu. It would mean a hell of a lot more if they actually created a character with an individual image.

Generally speaking, I'm alright with the idea of making comic book icons into legacy characters. It's an established practice with characters like Green Lantern and The Flash and selling new ideas under a well-known name is a sensible publicity tactic. I mean, realistically, if they had made this a new character with a separate identity from Iron Man, I probably wouldn't have paid much thought to her.

The fact that Iron Man has long been established as the alias of Tony Stark isn't a problem for me either. Batman will always be Bruce Wayne first, but I'm perfectly okay with Terry McGinnis taking on that name as well. It was a passing of the torch that made sense in that story line and if the same holds true here, then we're good.

My main issue with this one is actually very shallow. The character is called Iron Man. I feel like a female superhero wouldn't appreciate constantly being referred to as a man. Imagine if Ms. Marvel's powers were given to some guy from Milwaulkee but he still called himself Ms. Marvel. It'd just seem like...why? It's not something people would do. Especially since this girl supposedly has as big an ego as Tony Stark. Seems to me that a character like that would want to establish their own identity rather than riding on someone else's coattails.

I'm more bothered by her age, honestly. Then again, I understand that there have been other teen heroes before. I don't care what kind of a genius she is, she is still a teenager with a teenager's malformed, immature brain that leads to certain thoughts and feelings. If I were a comics reader I wouldn't find it appealing on those grounds alone. Either they're going to put too much teen angst onto her, which will be a turnoff for readers that are used to Tony, or they will ignore that and make her too adult-like, which seems unrealistic.

I also wonder if they can resist the urge to sexualize her.

All the other issues aside, I think it's certainly easier to do these replacements with heroes that don't actually rely on some super power. Tony Stark built himself an Iron Man suit; he's also made similar suits for others. Bruce Wayne has all of his fancy rich boy toys. But many of the other ones have unique powers that can't be passed down, like the Hulk, or those of the Fantastic Four, so I'm less okay with it in that regard.

What also annoys me is that, if these new comics don't do well, they will put it down to it being a female, or a black female, or just a young person, when in the majority of cases people just want to see Tony Stark as Iron Man, the one they've been reading and getting to know for however long.

It also seems shallow in that, most of the time, these are temporary replacements. One of the more common refrains I heard for the new female Thor was, "Don't worry. Dude Thor will eventually be worthy again and Mjolnir will chose him again, as has happened in the past; we've been here before." Thor was apparently also a frog at one point. However, I will say that I thought the passing of the torch to the new Spider-Man was done pretty well, and that seems permanent (in those comics, anyway).

I saw someone suggest Iron Maiden, which I thought sounded GREAT. Unfortunately, it also makes me think (and I'm sure would many others) of that torture device, so... that's probably a no-go.

Tony Stark already kinda has the attitude of a teenager though. He's selfish, rash, impulsive, arrogant, he doesn't listen to people, and he thinks he's invincible. Throw in the hypersexuality and unresolved parental issues and he's basically every sophomore in high school.

They probably will go the more mature route with her though.

Huh, Marvel talk.

Actually passing on titles is tactic that Marvel has used before. Miles Morales becoming Spider-man alongside Peter worked well, same as Kamala taking Ms Marvel's title now that it's free (Carol took over Captain Marvel's title). Also Kate taking Hawkeye's title, Jane Foster Thor's, Amadeus Cho Hulks, Sam Wilson Captain America's..

Sometimes it sticks and works, sometimes not. They are now trying it with Iron Man.

And not only with Riri Williams, although it's spoken about lot less, Doctor Doom is also taking over Iron Man's title at same time. So there is going to be two Iron Man's around in the future of comics, neither of them Tony.

Now personally I see Tony Stark as Iron Man and him stepping down does make me concerned. I hope they don't kill him off or anything, though even if they do that I'm sure he would be back quite soon as Iron Man anyways. There is theory of him dying and becoming Artificial Intelligence as well. But I do like Tony and want to see him around even if he's stepping down from the title.

In the new Iron Man's, I'm more interested of Doom cause he's one of my favs and way more established character than Riri (being most iconiq villain Marvel has). Riri can be great too, but there is not really lot of information about her at the moment.

Eh. I like Iron Man for Robert Downy Jr, not Tony Stark. Black!Female!IronMan is something I could go along with as a passing-of-the-torch storyline, but put her in a movie and I'd probably wait for reviews first. Make her a stereotype and I'll just pass. But since I don't buy comics anyway, they won't exactly notice my lack of money.

On the meta level, one of the more annoying things about progressive reboots of characters is when they change things like race/gender, but then a meta argument in support of them is 'why do you care? Race/gender isn't important.' If that was true, it wouldn't be an implicit selling point in changing the characters, would it?

But- but!- that mostly goes away in cases like this, when they're making a new character rather than refabricating an old one. The next generation of a character is different. I enjoy that there are multiple green lanterns, and an entire corps of them. Batman Beyond and Terry McGinis work for me because the handover is a large part of the story. It's not like some people who, say, insist that Captain America is suddenly now and always has been gay for Bucky/Tony/yaoi lust of the moment.

So is black female Iron Man weird? Yeah, I guess- more for the 'Man' than the idea of a new girl in a suit. I'd go with 'Iron Maiden' myself, even if the comic itself kept the title. Maybe the story will be good- maybe not. But I kinda doubt it's going to be about billionair philanthropist playboy of the military-industrial complex, which was kind of Tony's entire thing. He was supposed to be the sort of guy the hippies would hate to love.

Will this new girl be that? Probably not. Will she be bad? Dunno. Not particularly invested to find out, though.
