Good morning! Feel free to redirect me to a different forum if need be.

I recently bought Inquisition, then realized it was the third game in a trilogy! Needless to say, I am picking up Origins today for my 360 and plan to play through the first two games.

As far as the most compelling/interesting story goes taking the three games together, any race/class suggestions for each game? I'll enjoy any class and will play as a male character.

Thanks in advance!

I recommend playing as a rogue in DAO. You have a glut of warriors in DAO and not so many mages and rogues, but you'll miss out a lot on a lot of early loot if you don't play as a rogue. If you do play a rogue, consider taking a rank in Stealth and Pick-Pocketing as it opens up a line of quests in Denerim.

Biggest recommendation: go to the quartermaster in Ostagar as soon as you get there and buy a backpack. Then, after you become a Grey Warden, go back to the quartermaster and buy another backpack. Backpack space is at a premium in Dragon Age and those are the cheapest backpacks in the game.

As for the Origin stories, I personally like City Elf, but that's up to you to decide. Everyone likes the different Origin stories for different reasons; I suggest even playing through a couple of them before you make a final decision. You always end up at Ostagar at the end of each of them.

DA2 takes a big shift and locks you into a particular character, though you still get to decide their gender, appearance and class. Personally, I prefer a Warrior or Rogue for DA2, because the story never really justifies why Hawke is allowed to live openly as an apostate.

Yay! Welcome to Dragon Age.

There's honestly no right or wrong. With Origins, there are several different starting zones based on your race, class, and background, so if I were you I would play through a few of those and see which one you like best. You'll find ardent fans of every possible permutation of the hero. (Personally, I recommend the Dwarf Commoner, the Dwarf Noble, or the City Elf, but that's just me. Mages, Dalish, and Human Nobles all have their enthusiasts.)

In Dragon Age 2, you can't go wrong with any class. I like mage Hawke's story the most.

In DAI, humans and elves are the most popular because of the presence of the human-dominated Chantry and all the elven lore you uncover, but I enjoyed my qunari and dwarf Inquisitors just as much.

FWIW, the human mage from DAO and the protagonist of the second game are cousins, if that means anything to you.

All of this ^
But I'd add - in DA2 you'll get a different family member depending on your class. Personally I much prefer Bethany who you get if you're a rogue or warrior, not a mage. I think she adds more to the story too.

Of all the DLCS, make sure you get Legacy for da2 (I'd recommend playing it after something emotional happens in Act 2) and Trespasser for DAI.

I agree with Gomez.  Welcome to DA!  You are going to love the series.

My recommendation?  For DA: O, I'd go with either a human noble or dwarf noble.  Human noble has the best story connections, in my opinion, but dwarf noble is the best written and most interesting origin.  I agree with those who say to go with rogue for your class.  Even though, from a story perspective, warrior makes more sense for both of those origins, from a gameplay perspective, rogue is better because you have less rogues in your party roster and there are several times when you'll be alone in your party and you'll have to leave doors/chests locked if you aren't a rogue yourself.

For DA2, I actually think that mage Hawke is the best.  Yes, there's a bit of nonsense where Hawke (the PC) is able to live as an apostate mage that isn't explained in the story.  But the story is better if the PC has a direct connection to the conflict, versus a tangential family connection.  Plus, I think the sibling that you get as a mage is far superior to the one that you get as a warrior/rogue.

See?  That's interesting.  I think the total opposite of you.  I think that Carver is a much more interesting and compelling character than Bethany.  She just seems boring and bland and plot device ("I have to protect my sister").  Carver has a much stronger personality and, while he's a little **** most of the time that you are with him, his relationship with his elder sibling is a really well written and realistic one, in my opinion.  Templar Carver FTW!

Since I'll be locked into a human character in 2, here's what I'm rolling with.

Origins: Dwarf Commoner 2H Warrior. I like the look of a heavily armored dwarf swinging huge chunks of metal. It'll also be interesting to see how my chip on his shoulder-never experienced any sort of significant world events dwarf will respond to the choices that arise in the campaign. Will try to role play the best I can.

DA2: Mage. The whole refugee mage becoming embroiled in the beginnings of the Templar-Mage war seems too good to pass up.

Inquisition: Elf, likely Sword and Shield. I like the look and for variety's sake want to see how an elf makes his way through the chaotic world happenings.

Should be fun!

I went through a run with Carver and thought he was an annoying little runt.

Then last run I had Bethany and a pro-templar Hawke.  There was tension between them and I was planning to do the worst to her at the end of the game, but then I did Legacy with her after you-know-what happens in Act 2 and it was really sweet.  I felt like they found a bond between the 2 of them and it changed my mind about the ending.

So yeah I'm a Bethany fan after all, but it took 3 runs to get there.

I completely agree about the Dwarf Noble origin.  I wasn't keen to do it but it's so so good.  Everyone should give it a try.

Good choice of characters. Which specializations are you planning to choose?

Eh. I'll keep my disdain of choosing a mage in DA2 to a minimum. Any decision that kills Bethany automatically earns my disgust.

Welcome :)

I wouldn't sweat it on what to choose for DAO, though rogues have more loot options early on. Mages have a lot of interesting combat options. I would recommend playing each origin at least once. Dwarven noble and casteless play into part of the plot later, mages too. Human noble has some additional options at the landsmeet and can possibly become queen or king. City elf has some relevance in Denerim. Dalish doesn't get much, but the events of the Origin come back in the Witch Hunt DLC.

The choice in class in DA2 really just comes down to your preference. Mages get Carver, Rogues/Warriors get Bethany. Although it's a little hard to believe the hardline Templars in the city don't notice you flaunting magic as a Mage, but ultimately I don't think that detracts from the experience too much.

As for DAI, elves and humans have the most plot relevance. Qunari and Dwarves kinda get left out in the cold. I would say that the best story involves a romance available only to female elves, but you say you only play as male, so whatever.

Holy Moly! My dwarf commoner Dyrk was not expecting to see the king slaughtered within the first few hours of gameplay. I'm in for more of a wild ride than I expected.

I'd avoid any topic that has Loghain in the title, or the Origins section entirely at present. The Loghain debates get pretty heated and are full of spoilers end-game.

Now, with that said, welcome to the Dragon Age community!

Thank you for not being one of those #$%^ who decides it's a good idea to jump into the third iteration of a series and then come whining to the forums that they don't know what's going on.

My suggestions are these

1. Do get a backpack in Ostagar and remember to get a second one  before you start the big battle. They are the least expensive in the game and you will need every ounce of space later on.

If you want to fight for the downtrodden, City Elf origin is your path.

If you want the best written beginning in the game with a big shocker (unless you've read spoilers) Dwarf Noble is your path.

If you want the best beginning with the most satisfactory ****** for tat moment later in the game, go with Human Noble.

Once you've made it through with one of the above, start a second game and be a mage, just for the fun of using Walking Bomb!

I love Origins. I've played it many times, and I still choke up at the end. It's just that good. Have fun and remember that the game came out in '09 so the combat is...slow.  Come back and tell us what you liked best about the story, and which major quest was your favorite.

P.S. DA:2 - You'll hear complaints about it, but trust me, the game grows on you over time, particularly if you get the DLC to go with it.

Sorry to disgust you, but my canon character in DA:2 is a mage. First of all, the rivalmance with Fenris is awesome, and while I thought my sister, Bethany, was sweet, I'd miss my little brother and his angst. So much more fun than miss sweetness and light.

I presumed Dyrk would be jaded and suspicious of magic as a Dwarf. Went to Redcliffe first. Try as he might, he couldn't pull the trigger to kill Connor, and blood magic was a no go from the start (though he wouldn't have minded being done with Issold), he feared not gaining the Arl's assistance if he woke up to a dead son or wife.

Off to the circle where he decided to save the mages for pragmatic reasons. He needed their magic to fight the blight and save Connor to secure the Arl's assistance.

Next stop: Return to Redcliffe.

Dyrk's smart mouth seems to be covering for an empathy for the abused, likely stemming from his own casteless upbringing. He carries no love for his homeland.

Updates to come.

Story wise and lore wise I recommend mages, due to prejudice and a unique view of the world and the Fade you get a lot of interesting dialogue and opinions regarding how you view magic, mages and how the world views you.

All Origins are pretty great in DAO, Dwarf noble, Human noble and Dalish probably most. I think Human Noble makes story most personal especially if you also have Dragon Age Awakenings (expansion of DAO). I liked most 2H warrior combat-wise as well, though I found mostly controlling mage of the part most beneficial in combats (heal spamming ^^; ).

In DA2 I found double dagger rogue most fun to play with combat-wise, but all of mage, rogue and warrior make sense to me. If you go with mage you get one different companion than in rogue and warrior gets so that might impact the choice: I liked both though. In DA2 there is difference to DAO dialogue-wise, it's much closer to DAI's system with dialogue wheel. In DA2 what answers you choose: pacifist/sarcastic/aggressive affect bit on your Hawke's personality and might open new choices in certain situations.

I haven't played DAI that many times as other two, but I think playing as Elf is best story-wise especially when considering DLC's.

For last advice, don't forget romance options unless you really don't want to romance anyone and try to get all companions join you- I missed quite many when I first played DAO- it's not always very clear who can be your companion.

Dyrk saved the Arl with the help of the mages, a bit unusual for a dwarf but, then again, he's casteless and couldn't care less for dwarven society. Pretty eager the dump them for new things. He accepted the Arl's offer to become a Champion (and Allisfair's to become a Templar). Overall, feeling pretty good about himself after slaying the dragon outside Andraste's temple and then Flemeth. He totally fell for Leliana's accent and went for her.

Dyrk's avoiding Orzammar like the plague, really not looking forward to confronting those who oppressed him for so long. Instead he went to the Bracillian forest. The darkspawn threat is weighing on him, as he didn't give the werewolves a chance to talk before wiping them out.

Now Orzammar beckons (along with the less attractive cry of several side quests...)
