I'm amused with how big a decision this feels. I'm only halfway through DA2, but I'll be sitting at work, and all of the sudden I'm somewhat stressed about the character selection for my Inquisitor! Elf for the lore? But they are a bit puny (and the arm thing is weird...)! Human? It may be fun to play a Han Solo personality rogue, or perhaps sympathize with the Templars. Am I sold on rogue? Choices!

Please tell me others experience this as well I've still a whole adventure with Hawke to finish.

You're not alone! ;) I'd suggest trying something different since your Warden was a dwarf and Hawke's obviously human, but you can't go wrong either way.

For what it's worth, Inquisition is the only Dragon Age game that gives me pause when it comes to siding with mages versus templars... both story arcs are really enjoyable and there are significant differences depending on your choice, so if you like the game be sure to play it twice to see both avenues!

You are definitely not alone. Before DAI came out, I spent ages agonizing about whether my Inquistior should be a dwarf rogue or a qunari mage.

(I settled the dilemma by deciding that my protagonist for DA4 would be a qunari mage, even though the game doesn't exist yet and isn't even officially in production.)

My personal favorites are mages (any race) and archers, either human or elven.  It's a question of, do you want to try something different, or something you already know you like?  If you're having a lot of fun with your mage Hawke, and want to stick with it, mages of any race are a lot of fun in DA:I.  None of the dialog is nearly as snarky as Hawke at his/her best, but you can be humorous and witty.  I like my "what the &*%@ am I even doing here?" elven archer guy a lot.  He does look kind of scrawny, but having played female elves first, I'm used to that!  The lady elf Inqui looks like any reasonably strong enemy should be able to snap her in two like a twig.  This actually makes me love her more.  She looks fragile but is bada$$.  It makes me smile.

I agree with vertigomez that if you like the game, you should do at least two playthroughs, just to see all the content.

At this point I'm leaning toward a human rogue, still trying to decide between archer and DW. I've never played a rogue type character, so either would be a change. I'm playing ranged as a mage Hawke, so some close combat may be nice. My Hawke is very pro-mage, but after seeing the danger mages can pose, I feel my Inquisitor may side with the Templars (which also makes me lean human as I'm having trouble seeing an elf siding with the Templars).

Finished the Aveline quest. Somehow I managed to gain rivalry points while still having her end up with her crush. Just shows how different she and Wylds Hawke are. I also finished the Anders quest (unexpectedly hard battle at the end). I'm all for Anders and the mages, but geez did Justice go nuts there. I was not expecting him to kill the mage girl after the battle. More to come there I'm sure. I just agreed to help Merril with her quest. Wondering if her mirror ties into the one from Witch Hunt. It feels as if there are lots of little seeds being planted to all heck to break loose in Kirkwall. I'm not sure what the Qunari are up to, the Deep Roads idol is still out there, and I haven't even met the head Templar yet.

I hope this isn't too spoilery, but I'll just point out that in Inquisition, you can recruit a faction (either mages or templars) and yet not exactly "agree" with them.  You can conscript either, and force them to join the Inquisition because you believe that they are too dangerous to manage their own affairs.  If you like mages, but think they've gone off the deep end in DAII, you might consider playing the mage quest line and conscripting them.

Just when I thought we'd left the creepiness behind in the Deep Roads of Origins, some demented Mage goes Dr Frankenstein on Hawke's mother...I'll have the heeby jeebies for a week...Wylds Hawke gave Merril her elven tool for the mirror. She's like a little puppy, hard to say no to her. Wylds then took down the Templar trying to frame the Qunari. The Arishok ticks me off, but those guys were nuts. Pull of the Abyss and a bit of lightening did the trick. Now off to help my gal Isabella with her relic problem, whatever that is. Left Aveline in a huff that I wouldn't help her with her fugitives. Ah well, one hates me, one doesn't, easy decision!

You made the right choice. Aveline's fugitives can wait.

Incidentally, da ****'s about to hit the fan.

It is my opinion that archers are super-fun in DAI and DW are just OK. Which is funny because it's the opposite in DA2 with DW being super-fun. Mages are still my favorite class although I think I may have a equal number of DAI archers as mages by now and I didn't even try it out until my fourth play though, which should tell you how much I love playing an archer in DAI.

Also a tip for DAI: once you get access to crafting masterwork stuff, add the one that is +5 or +3 to gaurd on hit, even if you are a rouge or a mage you will still get gaurd every time you do basic attack. This helps immensely with rouges and mages being more squishy. I like to put it on armor but you can add it to weapons too. However if you put it on both make sure one is +3 and the other is +5 otherwise it won't stack. This is true for accessories too (a ring of 5% staggering and a belt of 5% staggering will only give you 5% but a ring of 5% and a belt of 10% will give you 15%). I recently found a ring that gave +5 gaurd ( I was playing jaws of hakon so might not be in base game) and since my armor was +5 I gave the ring to Sera.

Bare in mind that rogues can only DW daggers in DA2 and DAI. That put me off playing a DW rogue after I had so much fun with my sword-dagger combo in Origins...

Have fun with the climax of Act 2, it might just be the highlight of the game. Are you doing DLC and when?

I still find melee less than satisfactory in Inquisition, and much prefer archers.  In melee you have to manually follow the enemies or they get out of range, and you're swinging at air.  Unlike in Origins, there's no "automatically close on enemies if you've targeted them" and I don't find it fun.  Archers have one up on mages, and that's their ability to strafe.  Strafing rules!  But magic, is well, MAGIC!  What's not to love about raining fire and brimstone on your enemies?

I think I mentioned this before, but unlike other DA games, you can reassign ability points and rebuild your character anytime during the game.  So you're not locked into either DW or archer.  You could try one for a while, switch, try that for a while, then switch back.  I've even done that sometimes because I want to include different party members for a time (since you only need so many archers or dw rogues in the party at once).  It costs a little gold but if you don't do it more than a few times, it's pocket change really.

Quick question while I discover Isabella is the reason the Qunari are in Kirkwall, Ha! (That'll make choices on what to do with them more interesting). Was that Sten from Origins that I just killed?

Nope, Qunari have titles rather than names. Sten is a rank in the army, a captain of some sort, so there are many Sten.

Already did it, during Act 2, before Hawke's mother was murdered. I sided with the Warden, not keen on allowing Darkspawn to live (didn't want the Architect to live in awakening either, would have felt like making a deal with the devil, never turns out well). I was a bit surprised to learn Malcom Hawke was a blood mage.

Thanks, I thought it would have been a bit dull of a way for that character to die.

not really but then I've got lots of time on my side with not having a job and all that goes with it so I have the time to experience the game any which way I want. I wlil say though that rogues and mages are the best and most fun to play in DAI imo. Of those 2 I'd say mage is the easiest to play but rogues aren't that hard to master either although that does kind of depend on the style of rogue you are as of course your aware that you have archer rogues like Varric or DW rogues like Isabella as a DW you will need to chase down enemies on occasion whereas as an archer like with a mage you can just shoot them from where your standing.

Yeah that's kind of how I'm feeling about my Topal atm.

Actually based on what he said in that DLC he did it as a one off he never made a habit of it because he had kids and didn't want them affected by what he'd done, And kind of like the Inquisitor in DAI does it because he has no other choice.

Act 2. Done. Enter Knight Commander Meredith and the still annoying Carver. Felt like I ran around the pillars for an hour shooting spells at Arishok before he died. Obviously I wasn't going to let him take Isabella. Then I thought I'd do one more "quick" mission before bedtime so I trudged back to the Bone Pit...what felt like an hour later the High Dragon died and I had my champion robes (though honestly they don't quite seem to fit with my Wylds Hawke's tone, maybe they'll grow on me). I'm going to ride this Mage over Templar wave for all it's worth and see where it takes me. A few hours to beat Act 3 I'm guessing?

Planning to do Mark of the Assassin?

Also, fun fact, Sten from Origins becomes the new Arishok of the Qunari after DA2.

Watched a play through of Mark of the Assassin. Couldn't bring myself to buy it. Just killed Denarius for Fenris and then kept him from killing his sister. Poor guy hates me. Now to help Anders get some poop crystals for his "get crazy Justice out of me" potion.

Helped Anders make his potion and sneak into the Chantry. Now he's gone Johnny Cash and changed into a back robe while trying to give parting gifts to everyone (the scene with Varric and his mother's pillow, ha!). I also finished Isabella's quest. Went against her wishes and killed the slaver. Now she's finally confessed her love. Good for her. She's grown. Wylds helped some anti-Meredith nobles with their anti-Templar shenanigans. Felt good. Also feels good arguing with Meredith as an apostate. Glad she finally mentioned that the only reason I hadn't been arrested was because I was protecting Kirkwall. Nice filling of that story gap. Tracked down the first of the escapee circle mages, the blood Mage elf. My favorite line from Wylds Hawke "I just want to go ONE week without running into a demented Mage." He's pro-Mage to the bone, but a seed of doubt is growing in my mind. It feels like 1/10 of the mages I meet goes or is already crazy. My Warden was a dwarf who did not give a rip about the Mage/Templar conflict. He just wanted to end the blight. It's hard to ignore in this game. I think that dynamic will affect the personality of my Human Noble from the Free Marches in Inquisition. Perhaps I'll throw in some back story of him being in Kirkwall for a time. Great game, thought the repetitive maps have gotten stale. That's perhaps my only gripe of the game, that and enemies constantly jumping down behind my back. I'm barreling toward the finish! Hoping to finish this week and start Inquisition! (Hard to believe this whole adventure started after I inadvertently bought part three of a trilogy).
