Yeah, once you get to Skyhold the game really opens up. Too much so, for some people. What level are you and what difficulty are you playing?
Depending on that, you will probably want to avoid Hissing Wastes and Emprise du Lion until you get to a fairly high level (at least 17 or 18) as the enemies there are tough from the get-go. I usually don't even go there until I'm close to level 20.
Crestwood and Western Approach are mid-level areas that you shouldn't have much problem with right away.
Exalted Plains is probably a step up from there but easier than the first two I mentioned (hint: bring fire
).
Emerald Graves is kind of split as far as difficulty goes. The zone is divided by a river: the side you start on is about the same difficulty as the Plains, but the other side is toward the higher end of the scale.
You can also finish up anything left in the Hinterlands and other pre-Skyhold areas if you haven't already.
Do you have all/any of the DLC? If so, another possibility is Descent, at least the first part of it since the enemies do get harder the farther you progress. I'd wait until at least level 17 before starting it though. Warning: the loot is good but not much of it useable until you reach level 19+ so you might want to wait anyway. ![]()

I'm level 10 (nearly 11) and playing on Normal.
Haven't looked into any of the DLCs at this point.
Anyone have a good guide for crafting/runes/masterworks? It's a tad bit overhwelming, and I'm not sure if I'm spending too much/not enough time with it.
Thanks in advance.

For crafting, everything is leveled according to "Tiers." So a Tier 2 schematic is better than a Tier 1 schematic, and a Tier 3 material is better than a Tier 2 material. What you want to do is get enough of your best Tier material to build the core of the schematic (of the highest tier you have). It's great if you can get higher tier materials for the stat/bonus slots as well, but the main thing is the primary slot. There are only 4 Tiers, and the 4th Tier you won't get until later in the game - in the base game only High Dragons drop Tier 4 materials, and I think the only Tier 4 schematics are from DLC. Within a Tier, the "masterwork" schematics use slightly more materials than regular ones in that tier, and are therefore more powerful.
Then the question is, what kind of build do you want to make? Do you want to focus on critical hits? Then go for crit chance & crit damage. Basic damage output is your attack stat, which is general-purpose useful for anyone. For a dual-wield rogue, a defense stat like "guard on hit" is a HUGE advantage, since you can't build guard through talents/abilities. Or if you use stealth a lot, the faster movement in stealth fade-touched materials can be helpful. For mages I like to give them the fade-touched materials that reduce mana costs of abilities. If you find yourself getting banged up a lot, the fade-touched materials that regenerate health are worth equipping. Of course, since you can't buy fade-touched materials, you have to rely on luck to supply you with what you want. You may never get a fade-touched Obsidian to give you that guard-on-hit. So you'll have to craft with what fate and the RNG gives you!
Runes are a little different. Each rune uses a unique material, so a basic fire rune uses different materials than a master fire rune. Eventually you'll get plenty but rune materials can be scarce early on.
As to whether you are spending too much time on it... well, that depends on if you find it fun or not. It's perfectly possible to play the game without crafting anything, so only do it if you enjoy it. If you like customizing your builds, customizing your look, and crafting stuff that is more powerful than any loot that drops in the base game, crafting is for you. If you prefer to just get out there and explore and talk to people and fight the bad guys, there's nothing wrong with that either. You'll find adequate gear as loot. Play the game in the way you enjoy, and don't worry about whether you're doing it the "right" way. There's more than one right way!

Yup. Master a spec and you'll be a powerhouse, and assassin is one of the best damage dealers in the game.
Sounds like you are getting the perfect build for Wallace.

The Fallow Mire is probably the easiest zone to do everything in/clear out everything. Although, the "boss fight" can be pretty rough. Be careful with that'un. And make sure you speak to Skywatcher afterwards. (I mean don't just go World Map and warp back to Skyhold afterwards.)

That's an interesting one. I usually try to clear it before arriving at Skyhold these days. Give myself one less area to clear once the map opens up.

Me too. I would only go back for dawn lotus seeds, but now with the Golden Nug I don't have to. ![]()

It's amazing how even at level 11 with a rogue I'm enjoying (Wallace is toning down the super pro-Chantry bit as he goes. I think he's looking to shape the future of Thedas himself a bit more) I still am hit with temptations to re-roll characters! A saucy female Daelish who breaks stereotypes, possibly a warrior as that would be the most unusual class for her. Or a rift Mage just sounds cool. I don't think I could bring myself to romance Solace though...too smarmy (struggling for the right word here). Sticking with Wallace, but there's a female elf begging to be played!
Dwarven Inquisitors can use some love too, especially with the Descent DLC.

I think I'm going to re-roll as a Female Daelish tonight, sticking with DW as it is awesome. I'm just not connecting with my current Inquisitor.

Well color me surprised! From your previous posts it sounded like you had really connected with Wallace. Too bad you're giving up on the Cassandra romance... that's a good one!
But I have to admit I did the same thing you're doing! My first half playthrough was a Chantry supporting human mage. I switched half way through to a Dalish elf. Eventually I went back and finished the original playthrough, though.
Also, the Solas romance is the most powerful in the game, I think. It's tragic and heartbreaking and yet hopeful. If you're going to do a Dalish female, I have to recommend it. Though Cullen's is super sweet. I romance Cullen for sweetness and happily-ever-after (though you could go for Sera if you prefer, she gets her happily-ever-after, too), but I go for Solas for emotional gravitas.

I realize that I loved the DW rogue play style, but RPing Wallace was less than satisfying. I there was never any surprise to how he reacted, too high road all the time. I've always enjoyed my characters being a bit more eager to say what's on their mind.

I can't fault you at all for that. I have two characters right now that I'm running through - a full-on Chantry believing human guy who fully believes he's the Herald, and a Dalish elf rogue who kinda sorta believes in the Creators but doesn't really give a fig about religion in general. I enjoy the elf more. The human guy... meh. The Cassandra romance is the part that makes him worth playing. And he's a mage, which is always good fun. But the elf is just more fun to roleplay. I do find humans kind of boring, I guess! I also prefer more drama. Defying everyone by being an atheist is SO MUCH FUN!

That's a criticism that many have made of the Inquisitor. (S)he doesn't get to be quite as aggressive or sarcastic as Hawke, and seems more restrained in general. There are a couple of instances in the Trespasser DLC where that changes a bit, though...I realize that I loved the DW rogue play style, but RPing Wallace was less than satisfying. The Inquisitor is not as expressive as Hawke, its true for whichever race you pick or change to. They are always a much more reserved character and I think its a fair criticism by those who dislike this (myself included, really). The Inquisitor does have their moments where they do shine... I hope you feel better with your next creation!
Personally I have never had a problem roleplaying or finishing playthroughs, usually because I came prepared with a back-story and roleplaying ideas which motivated me to continue. Its a common thing you see on these forums though, a lot of players do not connect with their first choice Inquisitor especially and end up restarting, so you are not alone ![]()

My DW Daelish Inquisitor, Elianora is awesome (and a bombshell if I may brag on my character creation a bit). The rogue armor looks awesome on her, and I am getting a hang of crafting better. The voice acting for her is great. I'm more into her character. She had a reason to be at the Conclave, just to keep an eye on things, but she's not sure what to make of the Inquisition. Definitely not Andrastian. She even threw an early flirt at Solas. I'll be interested to see whether she goes Mage or Templar. She's already had a disagreement with Cassandra over the mages.
Maybe you should try out the mages since you already did Templars. Trust me, the Mage mission is more interesting than you think

No screencaps to show her off?
Also, I'd agree with superdark that since you've already experienced the Templar route (and can go back and finish it later if Wallace can lure you back) you should give the mages a try. I have a hard time seeing Dalish go for Templars, anyway. Templars are a danger to Dalish clans. They sometimes hunt them down because their Keepers are apostates. So I always figure my Dalish chars are very skittish around Templars.

That was my thought as well. We'll see how Ellianora responds to the initial encounters when they occur, but I can't imagine she'll be eager to pursue the Templars. My main interest is seeing whether she joins the mages as a partnership or claims their allegiance. I'll have to see how the situation plays out. She loves and is partial to her Daelish heritage, but is not a radical elf. She's not one who'd attack a stranger simply for venturing too close to her clan. She holds no hatred for the other races, though views their societal constructs (Chantry, etc) with a hearty amount of cynicism.
I've done it both ways, and it works out either way, but the story takes on a different flavor. If you really want to be iconoclastic, alliance is the way to go. Let's put it this way: very conservative Vivienne highly approves of conscription; independence-minded Solas favors alliance. Also Leliana (idealistic) will be very upset if you conscript, but Cassandra (practicality) will approve.

Elianora is surprising me and may end up falling for Solas. It's the elven conversation, the knowledge he possesses of elven history that even her clan is unaware. They bicker as he makes snide remarks about the Daelish and she snaps back defensively, but then she tries to defend them and his tone softens to, "Of course, I cannot expect of them that which isn't possible." Even this early in the story their conversations are fascinating and much different than his with Wallace. The elven flare to random world conversations is refreshing, even down to the prejudiced comments that Ellianora can't seem to let slide. She's torn. She's a lover of her clan and her people, leading her to be defensive, though she is enjoying her time away from them experiencing the outside world. She waffles on questions concerning religion, sometimes professing the elven gods while at others simply saying "I do not know." She does not believe herself to be anything of Andraste, and would lean away from believing Andraste being devine. She's nearly cleared out the level appropriate content in the Hinterlands. Her background fits my OCD herb/stone/gem gathering. She was trained to survive, of course she gathers everything she sees. Her view of mages is different than others, living in a clan where an apostate leads and there is no circle. She recognizes its dangers, and has lost approval with Solas by stating that blood magic is evil, but is not afraid of it enough to see the Templars as anything other than power hungry killers, a view jaded by stories (true or not) of their hunting elves. She was very turned off by Lord Seeker Lucius and plans to meet the mages in Redcliffe village, after recruiting Blackwall and Iron Bull, of course, Sera and Vivienne are already in the fold. Ellianora is sitting at level 7 currently.
