Glad to see you like your elf character. It's a reason why almost all my inquisitors are nonhuman

Bouncing around the Hinterlands, getting ready to pick up Iron Bull then head to RedCliff for the first visit. The party banter between Blackwall and Sera is great, particularly when he tells a joke and she snortles at it for five minutes. Complete side question: Is it worth it to pick up the shards? I've ignored them, but wondering if it would be worth peeling back for them. At least this time around I know to check Rift's levels prior to diving in and being slaughtered by a level 12 rage demon!

The shards unlock a temple in one area once you get all of them (Or rather, all of them are required to unlock every room). If you want to be a completionist and see as much content as you can, go for it, if only so you never have to do so again. The temple gives some resistance bonuses and a Pride Demon (Amongst lesser enemies) to fight, but that's it.

If you like crafting, it's also the best area to get a reliable and reasonably easily accessible supply of T2 metal before Skyhold.

The area maybe, but you don't need the shards for that. I never actually bothered to go to the area until I had all the shards though, so I didn't need them at that point.

You do need to pick up at least one shard to get the war table mission and unlock the area.

There is also a good two-handed sword called Verdict that you can pick up in a hidden spot on that map.  It's pretty powerful for an early game weapon.

I often try to get to the Oasis before hitting Skyhold.  You can unlock a couple of rooms with just the shards from the Hinterlands and Storm Coast, and who doesn't like permanent elemental resistance bonuses?

Also, I personally find it a beautiful map, if somewhat hard to navigate around.

You'll want around 12 shards to get anywhere in the temple.  But there are are 12 or 15 in the Oasis itself (though some are hidden in very difficult to reach places).  The ones in the Hinterlands are much easier to find, for the most part.

To locate Verdict (if you want it) consult the wiki or a YouTube guide.  It's in an out-of-the-way spot.  Not hard to get to, just a place you probably won't go unless you're looking for it.

Grabbed 12 shards and headed to the Oasis. Iron Bull was extremely pleased with his new sword. Thanks for the tip. I would have NEVER accidentally found that well. Even knowing where it was I almost didn't see it. Oasis is a bit of a nightmare to navigate, which I guess was intentional. Ellianora finally made her way into the temple and into the first flame room. Now she's a tiny bit more fire resistant, more wealthy, and carrying some sweet medium armor that's 4-5 levels too high, Ha! I finally realized Cassandra needed to be in the group to recruit horse master Dennett, so we picked him up then headed to RedCliff. Seeing the old windmill was still a cool moment, imagining the undead pouring into the village while my now dead Warden fought them off. Nice memory. I scouted the village a bit more this time and was awarded with several schematics I need to check out back at Haven and a conversation I missed with Wallace...Connor! I feel for him as he's carrying a load of guilt from his whole demon possession rampage thing. Saving him doesn't seem to have led to a life of happiness. Talked with Fiona. Even Ellianora, who sympathizes with the mages thinks they're idiots for becoming indentured to the magistrate. Show some spine people! Met Dorian and called it a night. Next up will be the mission to save the mages.

The oasis is frustrating, but once you get the hang of it (or memorize where everything is) it's not so bad.

Just a little tip. When you get Inquisition perks I would highly recommend spending them on the following perks: Arcane Knowledge, History Knowledge, Underworld Knowledge and Nobility Knowledge as they open up new dialog options throughout the game. Because if you'd had either the History Knowledge perk or the Underworld perk you would have been able to recruit Master Dennett yourself.  :D

And I agree with you about the mages.

Elianora is surprising me and may end up falling for Solas. It's the elven conversation, the knowledge he possesses of elven history that even her clan is unaware. They bicker as he makes snide remarks about the Daelish and she snaps back defensively, but then she tries to defend them and his tone softens to, "Of course, I cannot expect of them that which isn't possible." Even this early in the story their conversations are fascinating and much different than his with Wallace.

*fistpumps* ... Ahem. Excuse me. Sorry. >_>

Ellianora elected to tackle RedCliff. She'd prefer the mages to be allied with the Inquisition, and felt the threat a magister posed to be too much to ignore. (Turns out the story is better too!). She, Blackwall, Dorian and Solas headed out. (Much prefer Dorian's banter to Cole's. No contest.) Fiona was such a weak leader. I'm still irritated with her decision to submit to the Magister. The time warp aspect of the mission was well done and powerful. You don't often get to see the horror your failure would unleash upon the world. It added much more weight and desperation to Ellianora's plight. (Solas will definitely win the romance contest. Blackwall is great, but too much like a kicked puppy to fall for. Cullen's experience in the Circle Tower has jaded him too much against magic for he and a Daelish. I just don't see their romance growing naturally, though perhaps the story will change things.) What's with the red lyrium growing out of Fiona! Finding Leliana after a year of torture was rough. (Were they melting her face?!) I thought she'd strangle Dorian for his glibness. Ellianora racked up on loot, including an awesome sword for Blackwall, a huge dagger that I'm surprised she can hold with one hand, and a bunch of schematics I can't wait to sift through (crafting nerd), including a masterwork dagger. In the end we defeated Alexius. I'm looking forward to seeing that bastard (pardon the language) in front of the Inquisitor's judgement seat (Solas may have to be okay with a bit of retribution!). All in a day's work!

It's not Solas you have to be so worried about with the Alexius judgement.  It's Dorian.  Alexius was like a foster father to him at one point.  He won't take it well if you're harsh.  Although as a non-mage you can't go for the absolute worst judgement - Tranquility.  That's the one that as you can imagine, both Solas and Dorian think is horrific.

Forgot to mention the Allistair cameo. I always enjoy seeing him as king. He seems so exasperated and is likely still irritated at my Warden for shoving him into the role. Ha. Just wish Anora could have gotten over the whole "he executed my dad" thing. Oh well.

Finished "In Your Heart Shall Burn". I'm either more skilled or the Lucius battle was easier than the Fiona battle. I guess Ellianora is a level higher with much better equipment than Wallace had. We rolled that red Templar beast. It was great to see Ellianora being defiant to Coryphius. Not easily cowed this elf! The elven conversation options are great, particularly her discussion with Solas about the orb. "Great they are going to hate the elves for this now!" Ellianora is becoming a tad bit annoyed at this Herald of Andraste business. She tries to go along with it, but has moments of "I'm not a chosen holy one!" Vivienne seems to hate most things she says and does. We made it to the magnificent Skyhold and spoke with Hawke. He looks like my Hawke if I imagined he had the ever living snot beat out of him after Kirkwall and his nose never healed. Oh well. Level 10, time to head to Crestwood for my assassin quest!

Alright, I'm back to where I was with Wallace. I've drained Crestwood and sealed the rift. Glad I had the deft hands perk this time. Amulets of Power are great, first one for my Inquisitor! Finished the Assassin's quest and am excited to use Hidden Blades and Mark of Death. I sentenced Alexius to help the mages. Seemed merciful and helpful to me!

Great fun last night. I poked around Skyhold for a bit. The place is massive and I can easily lose an hour their. Tried to talk to a few of my companions. It's just not feasible to speak with all of them at once. Something unexpected happened. I accidentally clicked the "heart" dialogue option on Cullen and he ended with this smoldering stare that made Ellianora's knees weak. Solas has some competition my friends. Let the chase begin. I've begun just crafting for and outfitting the companions I'm taking out with me instead of everyone all at once. Much more manageable. We cleared out Crestwood and found Strom (sp?) with broken nose Hawke (I did an aweful job on his nose. Isabella will be ticked). Pretty messed up that Coryphius is basically leading the Wardens on a suicidal charge into the Blight. I'm going to need to stop that. Everything was clear in Crestwood, and then I noticed a dragon taunting me from across a valley, and Ellianora thought, "Screw you dragon." She, Blackwall, Sera, and Solas took that bad boy down and were pretty stoked with the plunder! Sera died perhaps 10 times, but oh well. Everyone felt like a BA back at Skyhold. Now I think we'll head back and clear our the Storm Coast and Hinterlands. On a side note, I still haven't successfully masterwork crafted anything (only have used bearclaws and the fancy bark material). Is it just chance?

Basically, yes, with things like bear claws and ironbark.  It's 20% chance, 30% chance, etc.  Sometimes you get lucky, sometimes you don't.  But I mainly use the fade-touched materials that give a specific bonus stat instead.  Those never fail.  The mastercrafted ones are nice on your really high end gear because they up the basic stats by a percentage - which works out to a bigger bonus on gear that's already better to start with.

And Yay for Dragonslaying!  You should go talk to Bull.  ;-)

Thanks for the tip. Ellianora got wasted with Bull. Cleared out the Hinterlanda and took out the dragon. There's only want quest left here I'm supposed to drop some tier 3 herb off by a tree on a hill (I've never run across said herb, will have to return later). Ellianora decided to toss Crestwood's Mayor into a Ferelden prison. She's not big on execution apparently. Crafted a sweet dagger with fade touched lambswool (looking forward to seeing how guard on hit works). Cleared out the first ice, spirit and fire rooms in the temple for the elemental resistance. Where should I head next? I've really only explored Crestwood and the Hinterlands, so the world is wide open!

If it's the herb I'm thinking of, you won't find it until late game areas.

You sound like you're at good level to clear out the Fallow Mire if you haven't already. There's also the Storm Coast. The Ferelden areas are generally lower level oriented than the areas in Orlais, so better to do them first, I've found.

Yep, that's pretty much what I was going to suggest as well.  Ferelden first, then Orlais.

One of my personal favorites in Orlais is the Western Approach.  That's coming up for you soon if you want to follow up on the Warden quest line.

Ellianora led the crew and cleaned out the Fallow Mire. They did really well with that area design (who am I kidding, they're all great). When the barbarian's dad showed up at Skyhold and tossed goats at the wall, Ellianora was ticked. She exiled them. They kidnapped her soldiers to try and kill her and now are angry that she killed them? We're working with a strict "no crazy" rule in the Inquisition, so they had to go. The moment came in a dream conversation with Solas when Ellianora had to kiss him or let him enter the friend zone. And...she couldn't do it. No spark there. He's like her nerdy older brother. She promptly skipped across Skyhold and had a moment with Cullen on the wall. I couldn't force the Solas thing, it just didn't seem natural. After that, she found a garden. Who knew? Planted Elfroot and another tier 3 herb (Dawn something?) then headed to the Storm Coast with Cassandra, Bull, and Big Bro Solas.

We cleared out the Storm Coast except for a few Red Lyrium deposits that I'm guessing we will have to come back later for. I didn't see the Dragon anywhere, but we will look again when we head back to smash the lyrium. The next stop has been the Western Approach where we've mainly cleared a few caves, conquered the Silent Ruins, and took over the keep. I think I accidentally sold my order "sad splinter". Anyway to find another to craft the weapon?
