After moving to Skyhold, you get the chance to grow some of the needed plants. But what do you have to do to get the seeds to plant them? I would assume you would've gotten the seeds the first time you picked up a plant. But I'm finding there are numerous plants which I've picked before which I still can't plant. Any tricks to this?
Dumb question - gathering seed for garden?

You get seeds from herbs after arriving to Skyhold. You don't get them before that.

Ummmm... No. The speed with which they grow and the fact that you can only have max. 6 pots make those seeds pretty useless. Better to just go gather needed herbs outside Skyhold.
But they look pretty if you plant right herb.

I grow blood lotus pretty much all game long since I always need it for grenades, and make the garden my first stop every time I return to Skyhold. Never take the Chantry garden option for your upgrade - it leaves you with only 2 pots for growing, and the stupid Chanters never shut up. I did it once and boy, was I sorry.
Good news though....once you have access to the Golden Nug, you get seeds as part of the syncing process so you never have to gather them again.

I like to grow the rarer plants in those pots since you have to go to particular locations to find them whereas elf root is everywhere. I'm big into trying to improve all the potions to the max even though some I never use.

^This. I use grenades and upgraded regen potion a lot. So having an easy way (thanks, Golden Nug) to have the 2 or 3 Amrita Vein or Prophet's Laurel needed to upgrade, without haven't to go near the Hissing Wasters or Emerald Graves, is a great time saver.
Oh, to answer the OP:

After Skyhold, there is a random chance to get a seed when you harvest an herb. It's a little more likely to happen than a Fade-Touched material, but it's the same idea. So get to picking those Felandaris and Dawn Lotus so you can sync the seeds to the Golden Nug and never had to do that again!
