Is this it? Is this what the rest of the game is like?

Storm Coast is a double-edged sword. Yeah, you need to unlock it anyway for recruiting characters, but it's probably one of the worst zones in the game at filling the area with interesting quests. So I guess it comes down to whether or not you feel you need the power.

Yeah, it's kind of like the Forbidden Oasis in that both zones are more about mastering difficult terrain than about narrative per se. Though I do like that one of the two main quest lines in the area is a bust -- I think PCs should fail at more stuff.

It costs 8 Power to access the Fallow Mire. You can get 1 Power from setting a camp (which is on the way) , 2 Power from completing Beacons in the Dark (which is on the way), 2 Power from Beneath the Mire (which is on the way), 2 Power from closing the Rift watched over by Amund (which is on the way), 3 Power from Lost Souls (which is the entire point of entering the Mire) and another Power point from recruiting Amund.

Opening the region basically pays for itself even without doing any significant exploration. And then there's the gains in Influence and equipment.

I just started a new playthrough the other day. I just dealt with the templars and mages in the Hinterlands, and I'm just now securing horses for the Inquisition. I've established 5 of 6 camps, closed several rifts, and completed the side quests that were on my way (including the ram meat). I have way more Power than I need to advance, but it just seems hard to justify heading to Val Royeaux to argue that Inquisition's case if I've left the Hinterlands in disarray. And obviously we need horses.

I'll head to Val Royeaux as soon as I have horses, and there's still a lot left to do in the Hinterlands, but I'll leave Val Royeaux with at least 10 Power in my pocket.

As an avid MMORPG player I may have a twisted view as the are not pure rpg's but I love the way that in DAI how I can take the time to develop my main character and companions. Finding recipes and crafting and generally just running around punching people in the head early is like in in training for a big fight!

Big, sprawling RPGs will never really get rid of this problem, I'd wager. Unless you craft a story that justifies that the villains spend all their lives sitting here waiting for you to come kill them, like in Dark Souls. But then your story lacks urgency and I'm much less interested in it, the stakes simply seem less high.

Actually, Morrowind was pretty good in that regard. The story happening was about long-terms changes that would take decades and were unstoppable (unless hero of course), so despite there being a very real threat to the whole region, it was perfectly acceptable, logical and even openly recommanded that the PC takes his time to do what was needed.

Oblivion on the other hand...

Yeah just finished my 6th playthrough of the game about 2 days ago. I do plan on doing more but need to build up a history for my next one first
