If the most recent leak is to be believed (and there is good reason to believe it), we have an AI synthetic squadmate.

Part of me is actually hoping that squadmate isn't an AI, since we've had that with Legion and EDI, but instead is a Virtual Alien inside a platform.

We need an AI like that one movie where Scarlett Johanson did the voice.  She knows how to take care of a user.

Edi was worthless.

I support this. The virtual aliens were a relatively unique idea and it does 100% solve almost all problems associated with any "ark" voyage anywhere. If your passengers dont need to eat, sleep, are immortal and take up basically no space - then any voyage of any duration at any velocity becomes practical.

Five pages and nobody has posted the perfect AI to help run the ship?

Hal is just wrong. Holly is at least fun.

Exactly. Plus who better to bring in on the construction of an ark than a race that has already built one.

It makes me wonder - if it turns out that "effective" FTL (such as an Alcubierre drive or mastering wormholes) is scientifically impossible, and relativistic travel is energetically implausible, then the ONLY way that our species will ever colonize the stars is with either a generation ship (or cryo equivalent) or via some weird transhumanism mind-uploading crap like the virtual aliens of mass effect did.

nah, I think EDI was great but I worry a new AI would feel like EDI 2.0 even if it tried not to.

Instead I'd rather have an Andromeda Alien who is part of the ship like Pilot from Farscape, that would have the potential to be pretty awesome, I think.

Or, the protagonist could be a highly advanced synthetic who doesn't realize he is a synthetic and actually has cultivated a profound hatred for synthetics.

Then, halfway through the story, he has the grand realization that he is synthetic and in fact has become everything he hates.

Like that skit from the Chapelle show about the blind African American "white" supremacist lol.

"Eventually, Albert the AI accepted the fact that he is synthetic. He promptly uninstalled himself from the exploration ship and turned off their life-support. When asked why, after fifteen years of exploration, he replied 'because they're toaster-lovers."

Good night.

Regardless of whether or not they add an AI squadmate...

If the Mass Effect and Halo series have taught us anything, its that if there IS an AI squadmate she will have big robotic boobs. This is a universal constant.

I'm gonna burn it.  That's what I'm gonna do.  Only way is if it has some bad ass accent.  And if it hits on you, but it never finishes the job....like Edi.

Yeah, I am the boss....that's for sure.  It's just a thin line men walk.  There is a popular saying when it comes to women.  "You can be right, or you can be happy."  Every man must pick and choose his battles when it comes to females.  A fine balancing act.  I think both sexes know who is right.....just one of the two is going to make you pay for being right (although passive agressive and maybe even years and years down the road) :P  Can't live with em...and you damn sure can't live without em.

Not opposed to it... but it'll probably be another anthropomorphic snorefest.

While I don't mind AI being another avenue to explore human thought (since that's all it can really ever be when created by a human) - at least mask it harder and try to come up with some unique avenue of thought.
