I'm not giving up on this guy, but he's tuff to L2P.  Can anyone suggest how to deal with banshees and praetorians? The mines and arrows are useless. Trying to run backwards and drop mines in their path just gets me killed. They move too fast, and the mines rarely explode. And a tip for phantoms would help.

As for mines, spamming mines is just a loser, IMHO. They sometimes don't go off at all if I drop them too fast (lag? I rarely host); and unless I'm right there, by the time I get to the fourth mine, the spawn has dispersed too much. Trying to use mines on fast moving sub-bosses is useless. So I find defensive mines is the best way, for me at least. On the wall at choke points. Reliable, and 6 grenades is plenty, so I rarely need ammo boxes or an ammo pack and I can skip grenade capacity gear.

The AP arrows are great. With a melee build, melee mod, hydraulic joints and strength III, they hit hard, and will score hits across the map. It's like a quick shooting sniper kit. And they do serious damage (6,700 per shot) to ravagers, brutes, scions and atlases. But again, useless against banshees, praetorians and phantoms.

If I have to go gun against those bubble bosses, then I need disruptor or phasic ammo, which means a piercing mod on the pistol, and a lot of running away. Not very manly.

I'm not very good with the Talon Merc, so take my advice with a grain of salt, but if Cain Mines aren't killing things, I think you've probably done something wrong with the build.

One trick I know (shh don't tell anyone people 'round here don't like it much) is to spam the mines, because as soon as you launch four in a row, the first one goes off, and generally  by following up that way you can take out an entire spawn in seconds.

He's not the I-win button may claim. Cain mine spam is the only sure way to deal with the bosses .. IMO to counter the 3(?) second delay on cast for them, you need to spam more than 3 which will immediately trigger the first one, then the rest will follow.

I spec his powers to provide 10 base grenades (the amount a TCP will refill) then use Assault Loadout for the extra 3 TCPs and spam away.

Also weapon weight is irrelevant so equip good heavy weapons

Yep. There was some very descriptive text in LH's post.

I'll persevere. Here, have it in media format - a plat solo from hardcoresalmon . A Mmf.
http://youtu.be/WV7_A3nhYLM
Watch 18:10 handling bubble of phantom
Notice where his cursor is when when he throw those cains. Watch precedence- check out lineholders remarks on his build a few threads ago,

Powers are useless when bubbles is active. So you have find ways to get it turned off. For praetorians you closeness get them to drop to melee sync you. So that requires timing. When it's dropped Do not throw the cains at the enemies - throw in on the ground *** and look away *** ie Not in your crosshairs. To quote sinful : figuratively close your eyes.

In general, with Talon, you have to host. Otherwise, mines and arrows are very unreliable. It is a huge difference. Even reasonable lag like 50-100 milliseconds has very strong effect on this guy.

You also need a fix for thermal clips for PC.

With regard to bosses, it is easier to cain-nuke them at the spawn. Normally, they don't have time to bubble.

There is not much with regard to L2P IMO. He is quite one-dimensional and I have never touched him after doing 200 waves for the challenges.

Also, you have to use 4 mines to nuke a spawn. So, 6 grenades won't work and IIRC, I was usually out of thermal clips by wave 9 or 10. And it was on some good map like FB White or Jade or Goddess. But the games were blazing fast in most cases, certainly under 20 minutes.

I usually use the GPS with Disruptor or Phasic rounds.  That drops their barriers pretty quickly.  At that point, use AP arrows to take them down.  Praetorians are fine, you just need to get them to land so they don't bubble.  Banshees can be tough because your teammates can make them bring up their bubble, which makes your arrows basically useless.  At that point, I just start concentrating on other enemies and let my teammates worry about the Banshees.  Make sure you shoot them once in a while to keep their barriers down.  If they start teleporting again, you can drop them pretty quickly with your AP arrows as long as their barriers are still down.

With the GPS, Phantoms are trivialized.

Some kind of mine-spamming build like this would work pretty well. http://kalence.drupa...!34G52334!EEGB3

However, he is extremely squishy. Not a big deal usually on host. But you need to constantly dodge and frequently go to hard cover. Arrows actually worked better from hard cover for me.

Mine spamming just shows you're garbage and shouldn't be playing the character. If you wanna do that armored compartments V will do just fine for your scrub ass.

Seriously, though. It helps to invest in power damage and amount of arrows released for AP bow. Concussive bow is a great defensive tool as it goes through shields and barriers and ragdolls health targets. One of the best tools in the game for dealing with Phantoms. Tag spaws with Cain Mines and use something that primes for your ammo. Guns of preference for me are something with respectable damage output like:

Crusader

Wraith

GPS

Graal

Talon

Lancer

Kishok

Adas

BPP (with Barrage Upgrade)

Saber

TL:DR (if your attention span is that of a vegged out goldfish)

Keep AP bows handy for bosses and armoured targets.

Keep Concussive bows handy for health targets.

Cain spam should only be done when surrounded or preset for spawns.

Take a weapon that can do some damage.

Yes, he can  grab. Just hold the melee button when the situation arises.

I tried also the Robin Hood build without any mines. It is difficult to make it work on PC just because enemies have a habit of shooting at you and actually hitting. But I'm pretty sure some better player will have it all under control.

Mkay, not so much "good" to add here. It's the shittiest execution of a bad idea in the history of MEMP. His little "lol_Iwin" cain mines in the hands of someone with an IQ over 50 are just dumb beyond words, the fact that a scrub like me could do a platinum solo on the second attempt ever including that I had to rebind every key at the start of the match will give you a clue at how stupidly OP this kit is.

Talon Merc gets a lot of hate on this forum.  Some of it is because of the keybind glitch, which would be understandably enraging (if I used custom keybindings).  The rest seems to be based on mine spamming - as if that were the only way to play the class: "I hate cain mine spam, therefore I hate the Talon and the Talon is bad."

The arrows work fine.  Use them as your bread and butter.  OP already pointed out that AP arrows do excellent damage, Oni Changas pointed out the usefulness of concussive arrows.  A good gun never hurts - a Talon Talon works nicely - and he synergizes well with charge-up weapons like the Graal.  Host if possible, but he's still workable if the lag isn't too bad, similar to an off-host vanguard.

Edit:  Phantoms are weird.  Sometimes they'll bubble and the concussive arrows will plink off harmlessly, sometimes the arrows will ignore the bubble and send the phantom flying.  I still have no idea what causes it to happen one way or the other.

The good - you can use another character whenever you like

The bad - it exists

The worse - it's getting used a lot

Never managed it, ever, off-host. I think it's like hiding your Cobra going up a ladder - off-host it just doesn't work sometimes. Like Cain Mines, I guess. Just one of the reasons I don't like him and never play him. When I did play him, I had reasonable success with the Robin Hood build and Graal. I could never understand anyone skipping Concussive Arrows, because they generally destroy Phantoms, in a very fun way.

As for the BSN 'hate' - I absolutely get it, but I have to be honest and say I think I've witnessed Mine-spam maybe twice - the same as I've actually witnessed missile-glitching. It doesn't bother or worry me if I see one in the lobby - I'm just glad it's not me.

I did consult this page; it was a great help in developing my build. That and three respecs. What I got from it was that a melee build was best, although I went 6b in fitness. 625 health/shields is below my skill set. And I need power amp, melee mods and more grenades; so no shield boosters. And bigger guns; I go GPS/eagle.

So basically, I have a squishy gun slinger. It works pretty well, though I like mine traps more than spams. Still learning. However, mostly I don't host, and this guy really suffers from lag. Enemies walk through mines, spammed mines don't go off, arrows don't lock on, blown mines still show laser beam. It's a mess. He really burns through my medigels.

Burning through medi-gels initially is not totally unusual. It just shows you that the way u moves those hips is totally predictable. Iirc some member compared it akin to running away from the police whilst he was still with the EyeAreA. So it is very helpful skills that u can acquire by learning to play that character that will certainly help u on plat and solo's where u need every one of those.

There are really only so many things you can do with him...fact is..he is really flimsy ...you can put a cyclonic or power amp..doesnt really matter cuz how fast his shields get depleted ..This is the only character that I advocate a "fight for your life" borderlands style evolution tree in his powers.....what I did was..when a wave was nearing the end..i would pop cain mines on spawn points..and then improvise with them as the wave went o n..I always forget to hit the button for ap arrows....if you speced for  killing spree in the fitness tree...you dont really even need to fire your gun once you get that 1st kill with the bow vs mooks..you can become a mass murderer that way.....just use the map and cling to corners when you find a spawn using RHA.
