Upgrading Skyhold: What's the point?

So I gather all the materials to upgrade the Courtyard.  When you first arrive at Skyhold, it's filled with wounded just lying around with a non-mage surgeon caring for them.  You have the option of setting up a training ring for soldiers to joust or a hospital.  So I set up a hospital and -- surprise, surprise -- the bodies are still in the Courtyard.  In the hospital, the bed are empty but the surgeon is wandering around saying she's just too busy to talk to you!  What the heck?  And more importantly, what's the point?  Was it too much to ask that the wounded be moved to the hospital?

And then there's the mage or Templar tower upgrade.  Visually okay, but why not add a shop to the tower when you upgrade?  A mage tower could have a "Wonders of Thedas" type shop.  A Templar tower could have a shop catering to mages and warriors.

At least with the garden upgrade, you have the option of growing the harder to find plants.

I think the upgrades count towards your Divine vote. Also, if you upgrade the tower, it gives an extra place for Lord Trifles to appear.

They do? That's interesting. I usually make a herb garden, Templar tower if I side with them....which I mostly do, and the infirmary. Must be partly why, no matter what I do, I always get Leliana as divine.
But who's Lord Trifles?

Personally I NEED the sparring ring so that Skyhold would look more lively. :c

Really? Hmnm... I don't think they count...

But who's Lord Trifles?

This guy.

OP. I asked myself this question a few times. I never found satisfying answer (at least not satisfying for me).

Skyhold's upgrades have nothing to do with who becomes Divine. The choices are purely cosmetic.

IMO: Skyhold and the upgrades were poorly implemented.  Three DA years later the walls still have holes in them.

Oh that guy. Out of 50 or so playthroughs I saw him a grand total of......ONE. He was stood between Blackwalls stable and the wall.

They're disappointing.  First time I did one I wanted the sparring ring or whatever it's called.  I went to go find the quarries and other bits and bobs, but when I chose it all I got was a picket fence.

How does that take all those materials?  I was expecting a new floor and other cosmetic stuff.  Sheesh it's underwhelming.

I'm assuming they ran out of time and were going to make them more impressive.  I think they add to your influence/power but aren't really worth it for anything other than roleplay.

The one exception I found is being able to plant more herbs in the herb garden, that's great for getting the rare ones you need to complete certain alchemy upgrades.

So yeah, don't break your neck trying to do them.  If you have the materials, great.  If not, meh. *shrugs shoulders*

I enjoyed seeing the first couple of iterations of Skyhold as they made repairs in the beginning.  It made the world feel more dynamic and fluid.

To then see it all grind to a halt and remain permanently 'not quite finished' sucks.  I wish they'd put the effort into making one last version, it would've been great.  :(

Plus my IQ got sick of freezing her butt off on the way to the war table.

I'm not basing my conclusion on hard data, just anecdotal observation.

It gave you something to do, i guess. The only change i ever noticed was the medical care place. I would've loved it to have more effect. I mean, someone could've shot the Inquisitor with a stray arrow every time they went to the war room.

I wonder if we will see the differences more in DA4, if we ever see or hear of Skyhold again

My poor Inquisitor had a rough romantic night with Cullen.

The cold air coming from the gaping hole in the roof caused my Inquisitor to be uncomfortable from her hard nips. Then Cullen could not <coughs> "Stand at attention." It was pretty much a disaster.

And to make matters worse the only source of heat was from cuddling up together under a thin sheet.  They still froze their butts off.

Ah yes, the greatest threat to the success of the Inquisition.

If you're a Faithful Inquisitor, and you build the Chantry garden, you unlock a few unique war table missions.

I always build the clinic (or whatever it's called) because at least with that you're repairing that one small part of Skyhold.

Yeah, upgrades are kinda pointless and badly done, which is a shame because I would buy an entire game built around the concept of upgrading a fortress in various ways to build an army. That's been the game I've wanted to play for over fifteen years now - I'm close to just making it myself at this point...

I usually go with the sparring ring, the chantry garden and the mage tower, simply based off role-playing choices.

Those holes are there since the time of Arlathan when Solas was the master of the castle

Unless there's a way to cheat up the materials via console, I'm not updating anything. It takes too much time to grind for what it does.

They do?

They don't.

The Chantry Gardens gives you a War Table oporation (yay?) but I think the others are purely cosmetic as far as I have noticed..

I still think the Quizquisition was a mistake when they could've just done the InQuizition.

Anyway, back on topic:

While it serves no gameplay purpose, from time to time I still do it on certain playthroughs to add to the roleplay factor. Like I'll give devout Andrastian characters a Chantry garden.

Cantina is writing fan fiction in this tread.

Surely they could have made a few beds for the infirmary, with all the lumber I found.

Heck, I'd be glad to give them my big living quarters to make a nicer infirmary.

Grind? Won't you literally end up walking right past a bunch of quarries and logging stands during ordinary gameplay? OK, you might have to walk your Quizzy five or six steps to the side, but I wouldn't call that grinding.

Good point, but it would have been lost on too many people not using subtitles.

Hey, maybe it's for the best. No walls + no soundproofing = one awkward guard rotation down below :P
