Blackwall can be made pretty unkillable from my experience.

Agreed. I can honestly say that I've never had Blackwall fall in battle more than a handful of times. Especially once he's got his specialisation.

Is Marshmallow Varric's nickname for Bull? It should be.

He's good against dragons. Other than that I prefer to have Cass or Blackwall in my team (unless I play my rogue Lavellan who romances him, then I just have to try to be patient and understanding)

You know, if Inquisition were turned into a live action movie or tv show, Terry Crews would make the perfect Iron Bull.

I've had good success with AI-controlled Blackwall, myself. IB not so much, unless I'm running a two-tank squad.

Do you mean as an AI-controlled 2-H warrior? That was what I meant re: the champion post. Not the specialization per se, but rather doing it as something other than an S&S warrior.

I use Bull virtually all the time on nightmare with even ground with generally high success using following strat. The trick is to maximize his guard generation.

1) Spec him down the left side of the Two Hander tree (MUST get Flawless Defense too), giving priority casting to Block & Slash.

2) In Vanguard take War Cry with Call to Arms, Untouchable Defense, Charging Bull with Gore and Trample, It'll Cost You, Cutting Words, Livid with Still Standing. Give priority to Livid and War Cry.

3) Take the LEFT side of the Reaver tree first (eventually you'll have all of them), and put skills in this only after you have his core guard generation from other trees. (Livid, War Cry, Untouchable, Block & Slash, ect) Ring of Pain and Dragon's Rage MUST stay disabled at all times.

4)- Give his weapon or armor guard per hit. (Doing both would be even better, - but I never did out of fear it would be too cheap so it isn't a requirement.)

5)- Amulet of Evasion is a wet dream if you can find one. Amulet of Death Syphon and Physical Immunity are too for obvious reasons.

6)- Ring of Life drain, barrier generation and ability enhancement for a skill he spams (like livid) are all very useful.

7)- A belt of guard, heal bonus, melee defense are all useful.

8)- He is NOT a tank, and you must still bring Cass or Blackwall if you aren't playing a tanky Inquis.

Hopefully this helps.

Vivienne is surprisingly a badass when it comes to dragons. She shined with the Highland Ravager especially.

Yeah. AI and 2H. His spec makes up somewhat for not having the S&S defenses. Adamant gives him a big advantage over Iron Bull. Still, he's getting a lot of his Guard from the new Horn of Valor toggle. I don't know how well this would have worked pre-Trespasser.

The passives from S&S still works with a 2-hander right? Those can boost his survivability a bit.

I tend to treat Bull like a rogue in that his best defence is a good offence, so high crit chance to take advantage of Flow Of Battle tends to be the order of the day for me.

Horn Of Valour and War Cry keep his guard up, Devour allows him to heal himself, Dragon Rage tears **** up and Block And Slash helps him defend himself.
I should point out that it took a very specific party for this set up work though (Artificer Inquisitor, Varric and a mage, usually Solas).

What I did:

1) Respec him to sword and shield instead of two handed.

2) Focus on abilities that build guard

3) Focus on Reaver abilities and upgrades that refenerate health.

They work, yes. You definitely want to pick up Bear Mauls the Wolves, at least, since a lot of the damage IB takes will come from flanking attacks. The hard part is throwing away the prereq point fir the useless activated ability.

This.

And I don't really believe in respeccing him into S&S since Reaver specialization is so much better for DPS. Cassandra's and Blackwall's specializations have much more tanking utility (especially Blackwall).
