Damn, time to replay DA:O.

This never happened in my game, is it because of 2 specializations? Anyway shame I didn't come across it, because it is seriously amazing.

that situation was removed before the game was released because it could have prevented players from finishing the required main quests. To get it in game you must use specific mods that bring it back.

What gameplay was this? The fetch quests?

Everything we do in the game is gameplay. I was referring to the exploration and travel, but everything from crafting to inventory management counts as gameplay.

The nature of the conversations is that we can only follow where the writers lead, so I'd rather have more gameplay that doesn't involve talking to people.

But it does no credit to the world that our protagonist can do absolutely everything, especially when the world doesn't react accordingly.

That the world can't react appropriately is the problem. That we can do everything is a symptom of that problem.

We should be able to do any thing, but a reactive world would generally prevent us from doing every thing.

Why?

Because it's the defining characteristic of the group. Otherwise, there's no reason for the label to exist.

Unless you play tabletop RPGs alone, then the experience is as much about playing one's character as it is enjoying your friend's characters and experiencing the DM's story. Some degree of passivity is perfectly acceptable in tabletop games.

I completely disagree. Every moment involves the player determining how those events affect his character. Do they change the character's opinion on an NPC? Do they weaken the character's resolve to complete his quest?

Maintaining a coherent mental state is an ongoing activity.

Videogames are the only media that can provide the visual immersion of a movie with the reactivity and engagement of a tabletop RPG. Attempting to achieve both does not make them a worse product.

Not necessarily.

But Mass Effect isn't a driving game. It's not even just an RPG, it's a shooter as well. In this case stripping away the RPG features (or vice versa) leaves us with a perfectly playable game. Of course, it would be a lesser experience: one would be a half-decent Gears clone and the other a half-decent Telltale clone, but still enjoyable nonetheless.

Eother it's in the category or it's not. There's no middle ground.

There's no reason Mass Effect can't be both an RPG and a shooter, as long as it satisfies 100% of the requirements of both groups.

Your comparison is especially incorrect when we consider the fact that no RPG inherently requires the player to roleplay. That rule must be imposed by either the DM or yourself. Many still find it quite fun to just play themselves wearing different skin or just play erratically to see what happens.

I didn't require that. The game needs to permit roleplaying, not force it. You can play a racing game without racing. You can play a roleplaying game without roleplaying. But roleplaying absolutely needs to be possible.

Also if you're not wearing any armor, then your [squadmates]  should comment on it

Jack: "Hey Shepard, you dumb ass. Forget your helmet again!?!"

Liara: "By the goddess! Keep that helmet off here and you will embrace eternity."

Zaeed: "Last time I went without a helmet around this neck of the woods, I nearly lost my foot."

Wrex: "No helmet, Shepard? This ain't no rite of passage test! Heh heh heh."

Grunt: "Shepard, why don't you wear my tank on your head! Heh heh heh."

Tali: "Shepard, you Boshtet! If you don't put a helmet on, I'll make you wear mine."

Miranda: "If I'd had my way, we'd have cloned a second head for you - with an implant."

Gosh, I hate this missed opportunity with Javik.

I would love to see him react on us wearing collector armor, it would have been best thing ever, if they did it in fact we would forgive them for horribad endings we got.

Knowing Javik, he would probably wear that armor himself without too many reservations, I doubt he feels anything but scorn and hatred towards the Collectors.

You don't know Javik well then lol

He hates things by name 'Collectors' because they are wearing face of his people and he finds that mockery, so what makes you think he would be happy to see a primitive do the same thing

And the greatest mockery he can offer back is to wear that armor...

-Remember playing DA:I and remember Iron Bull telling how he loves readheads, how he goes ~hng~ each time he sees one....and he never comments on your character's red hair.

addtext_com_MDAwMzUyNzk3Nzk_zpswjwru9gp.

I thought the same thing. When I did my first playthrough I noticed that Iron Bull said this, so I wondered if when I did my female character playthrough (my female characters are always redheads) if he would notice or not. Alas, I was disappointed that he did not comment on it.

Fable 2 had something like that. Putting things into Will made you all glowy, Skill made you taller and Strength made you buffer. Though Instead of looking buff your character just ended up looking weirdly chunky.  Not that I recall anyone actually reacting to it though then again it's been ages since I played that game.

All the three Fable games had that feature where allocating points to stats changed the appearance. They also had the somewhat unfortunate feature in that good people are beautiful and bad people are ugly, which was not problematic in the least.

Although in Fable 3, the highest good morality appearance was unintentionally kind of horrific.

Probably nobody knows game but i really liked how in faery legends of avalon you skills affect you appearance. You can buy tail cat tail give you evade chance, scorpion tail give you poison attack, different type of wings. And some other stuff. Selection is small but still it was nice.

I can see something similar done with Cybernetics in ME. (wishful thinking, but hey... who knows)

That was pretty nice I've played a few times to check out the power customization affecting the looks tend to go with dragonfly wings a lot myself. Sucks how the game ended though.

In DA:I companions of the same class as you do have a reaction when you pick you specialization, so there is some recognition there.

It wasn't enough though.

I'd like recognition for more than just class choice. Recognition for decisions as well. More than just a single line or complete apathy. Same can be said about your background.

Unless I had a bug in a few of my runs I can say that didn't apply to all of them, the rogues most so from what I noticed. Again I could of been bugged but from my experience only Assassin was noticed or mentioned and then only by Leliana.

So if something like that were to happen again it would need quite a bit of improvement imo.

Cassandra also reacts to the Inquisitor becoming a Reaver, warning against consuming too much dragon blood and the rather nasty side effects it can have.

Iron Bull also comments on you becoming a Champion.

In DA:I I was disappoint of people not commenting on Varric's chest-hair all the time.

I mean before even saying Varric they should have mentioned his glorious chest-hair...his CHEST-HAIR needed to be recognized more then anything else in game. Also Varric should have just talked about his chest-hair 24/7, 'tis bad that only Cassandra mentioned glory of Varric's chest-hair only once, not good not good at all. That damn chest-hair has books about it, even Divine ~oh my~ wanted to see that chest-hair herself and in game Cassandara is only one recognizing 'tis amazing chest-hair and only once?  The chest-hair people the chest-hair...

Needed to be every-day topic about Varric in game damnit!

Would have been way better then whole "Let's make Bianca alive so we have excuse why we didn't give him as romance" case.
