So in my extended noMP time, I've been playing through ME2 for the fifth time, on Hardcore, with an Engineer. I've beaten the game on Insanity but I'm just looking for a decent challenge when I'm bored, not CPU ultradeath mode.

I have previously said ME2 is my favorite SP game, and that stands, but the most glaring disadvantage ME2 has is the lack of a roll/dodge. Aside from that, I think taking on the various merc factions, Geth, and the lolcollecterz is overall more enjoyable than ME3's factions, despite the fact that ME3 has superior gameplay overall. I think the banter between the Eclipse mercs, for example, is far better than the GRABBING COVUR of Cerberus and makes for a more engrossing environment. Just fighting a variety of non-mutant Asari, Salarians, and especially Krogan (Krogan taunts put Harby's to shame) is a lot more interesting than playing dodge-the-banshee. And on Hardcore you do have to stick to cover or use teammates/drones to distract the enemy or get laid out very quickly.

Now I will fully admit that I got into Ragemissile mood on occasion, such as vs. the Eclipse crowd at the end of Miranda's loyalty mission and responded to getting shot in the back by Arc-projectoring all the things until I was the winner, but overall ME2 has been as fun as ever. It isn't as demanding or complex as ME3, especially because of the comparatively small arsenal, but it remains a great game as long as you don't let Timmy or Jacob annoy you too much.

I always considered ME2 to be a better SP experience than ME3, it has a darker atmosphere to it that I always liked more.

But I'd take ME3MP any day over ME2.

An excellent synopsis right there! However, you may find the Revenant OP in ME2 since you excel in using it already in ME3MP.

After hundreds of hours in ME3MP, I found myself officially unable to play ME2SP at all. Got too used to rolls.

No, Saikyo-san has truly unlocked Revenant Mastery, but only when Saikyo-san uses it.

This thread is eating all my likes.

ME2 is one of the best games I have ever played. It was one of the greatest video game experiences I have had. Before it, I could not stand any shooting games, my life was JRPGs. ME2 also lead me to Borderlands and Killing Floor, the only other shooting games I have really enjoyed. I have played ME2 on Insanity with every class. It was a brilliant game overall. And the over dramatized deaths are hilarious.

ME3 MP is good, but I'm not sure I would call it better. Just Different. It's like Killing Floor with magic, which is a good thing. It just doesn't have ME2's atmosphere. ME2's simplicity brings a purity to it that the complexity of ME3MP cannot compare with. ME3MP is basically he action game version for those with shorter attention spans (which I think we are all developing as time goes on).

ME3MP is like the quick fix, gameplay whenever you want, for short periods, that you can repeat as desired. ME2SP is an epic adventure that you embark upon to immerse yourself in the universe of Mass Effect.

ME3MP is the action movie version, ME2SP is the epic book series. Different strokes for different folks.

Though it would be fun to have the ME2-style "Mercenaries" faction in ME3MP. All those salarian screams! :D

Great post, I agree. ME2 has the best SP of the entire trilogy. As you said, comparing SP to MP isn't very relevant.

I too have been doing a mega playthrough ME1 -> ME2 -> ME3 to build up a bit of excitement for ME:A whenever that may be.

It was my first time playing ME1, although it's a bit dated now I found myself really enjoying this game. You can see how the mechanics were diluted down as the series continued. Love variety of ammo types and being able to pick it for everything, dislike how all the guns are approx the same.

The lack of a dodge in ME2 catches me out all the time - I tend to hover a bit behind soft cover (in the style of ME3 MP) and when damage is incoming (warp balls, rockets etc) you can't really do anything except try and push forward into hard cover. On that topic - hard cover is magical - enemies sometimes just stand infront of it blasting away doing you no damage whatsoever. Looks like running around cover is super secret tactic that they didn't put points in.

Other things about ME2 that ME3MP people will notice: charge does no damage and doesn't detonate anything, in fact nothing detonates apart from warp, cryo ammo is actually useful, combat drone always pulls aggro, barriers are not just purple shields (I like that they have different resistances).

Me too

On the other hand, the main pitch is pretty boring and linear compared to the other 2 : Assemble a team and kill the bad guys. It s even a death star stuff again

.

OT: having replayed the trilogy few month ago, me2 gameplay, as much as enjoyed it at the time, is quite boring now compared to ME3. But i agree fighting mercs was fun and more diversified

I have more than 15 characters full playthroughs in ME2, all with NG+, so ... ;)

It feels a bit more clunky than ME3, but I also find it delivering a bit more visceral experience. Plus, ME2 Insanity was somewhat difficult in places, while ME3 Insanity is a joke. Even ME3MP Platinum is relatively smooth with 3 semi-decent players.

The one thing I miss most from ME2 is the importance of gaining ground. In ME2 it was very rewarding, what with the cutting off of spawn points, while in ME3MP it is only about not getting surrounded and getting the least exposure. If you front-load enough damage, ME3MP can be very static.

In a way ME2 provides a better power trip than the fast food combat mechanics of ME3(MP).

For the most part, I preferred ME2's combat. However, ME3 combat felt more mobile and more expansive (with more combos, dodge, over-cover grab, etc.).

However, ME2 was much better in other aspects. Enemies in ME2 were a lot more interesting. Enemy engineers, vanguards, etc made it a lot more interesting. The banter was quite amusing too. And Harby's trash-talking  <3.

Another thing I absolutely dislike about ME3 is the way they treated barriers. In ME2, shields needed tech powers/disruptor ammo and barriers needed biotics/warp ammo and armor was susceptible to both. In ME3, they made shields and barriers virtually indifferent to tech powers but not biotics. Same thing with disruptor ammo priming on barriers and armor. Seriously, some of the stupidest designs IMO.

I also liked the 'certain weapons are more effective against certain protections' design of ME2. It would've been difficult to employ it in ME3 given the weight-cooldown relations and the slow weapon switching (esp. in MP).

In terms of SP, I prefer ME2 anyday. ME3 SP feels dull. It's kinda hard to compare ME2SP to ME3MP because they are different. ME3MP would probably win mainly because it has higher replay value and lot more options (playing as diff. races, more weapons, more powers, etc).

^ I noticed that you still have only the Me3 banner in your avatar, though. I completed Me1, Me2 and Me3 - but the me1 banner is also missing on my avatar. The only explanation I had for that, until now, is that I registered with bsn after me1 playthrough. Some "universal" glitch with most consoles. But now you destroyed my "bsn registration" theory...or?

OT : in my own mind, Me1,me2,me3, me3mp are all seperate experiences, each a jewel in its own, not to be compared or to be prioritised. In each there were stuff that I liked more or less, like those me1 minigames time-out caused by picture smoothing settings on the tv...

Just saying..mattock was really good..also RIP really good Locust..you will be missed..I loved it in ME2.

The mattock was a superb gun in ME2 and not the silly watered down version in ME3. Same with the locust and the collector assault rifle which were both fantastic in me2. You also get to use heavy weapons, specifically the CAIN nuke. The first time I used it, was in an elevator against a bunch of blue suns and I promptly killed myself and everyone else in the room. Glorious!

You also get to fight a thresher maw and bang heads with the krogan! There's also the fight with Tela Vasir in LOTSB where you get to fight a vanguard which is even better if you're a vanguard yourself and you're both biotic charging each other across the arena!

I like ME3 MP a lot but ME2 is rather special.

no idea why or when u get the banner.

I bought ME 1 and 2 at some point last year for the playtrough, never had the banners, struggled more than half a day to make ME1 work on my laptop without success, asked for refund ... (ME2 for PC doesnt even include DLC btw and they R more expensive each than the main game)

Funny thing is i got refund including a change comission i had allready been refund by my bank :D
