Okay, so I was nearing the end of my first Inquisition playthrough. You know when it makes you choose between Leliana, Cassandar, or even Vivienne, right?

Well, I think the game just went auto and chose Leliana FOR me, even when I chose NOT to support her.(Still love her tho, but damn making her Hardened is scary)

How do I avoid that? I'm starting a new save file with a Templar-leaning campaign, so maybe I could get Cassandra OR Vivienne in this. IDK.

The game picks one based on your choices throughout the game. Who you verbally support does affect the outcome, but apparently not that much. I've only had the Divine I wanted chosen once in all my playthroughs :/. Leliana has been the most elusive for me, never gotten her once.

You can look up which decisions affect the outcome on the wiki, there is a list. Certain decisions give points kind of like approval, we just never see a meter anywhere. A decision that affects the Divine a lot for example is who you sided with and what you did in the mage/templar war.

If you support the templars there is a higher chance you'll get Vivienne.

Seriously? Damn, mind exchanging playthroughs, because I still don't know how my denouncement still got Leliana on the throne

Dammit, I knew that mage/templar thing was going to bite me in the bit.

Well, my 2nd Hawke chose Templars, so maybe my dwarf Inquisitor choosing the Templars in the new save might change things. Thank you! QeQ)/

Don't kill the traitor in Haven when prompt to spare or kill the traitor, for starters. If you kill, you ruin your chances immediately. Stupid thing. Leliana can easily become divine at times, because there are times where she loses points, but she gains points towards divine instead as stated by the wiki. If you supported the more anti-chantry decisions, then Leliana comes closer to being divine. So, if you supported in not restoring the chantry or agreeing with Leliana's point of views about the chantry, then that supports her in becoming the divine. However, there are glitches where the wrong divine is chosen, but that has yet to happen to me.

The breakdown for how the Divine is elected can be found here:

If you go free mages, you will have one hell of a time getting Viv as Divine.  If you go free Templars, good luck getting Leliana as Divine.  Conscription on either front tilts you toward Cass since she is the moderate choice. If you are trying for a more moderate "conscripted" path the whole snake pit at the Winter Palace  and who you choose there makes a big difference as well.  Ugh.. WEWH.. Halamsharal is the worst.

Conscripting the Mages actually puts you pretty strongly towards Vivienne.

Conscripting the Templars is a moderate Cassandra/Vivienne choice
