Has anybody here given Unity a try? Their asset store has a number of free models, but you can only open them in Unity. Some appear to be at least superficially of decent quality, although I think they are all FBX format. (Blender can't open FBX files that are ASCII format.) For example: Medieval Barrows and Wagons, Medieval Fence Pack, Medieval Props, and Hand Painted Cart. I didn't see any use license on there, so perhaps that appears when you download?

Just curious what the experience is like.

I have played a bit with Unity during the almost dead game Jagged Alliance Flashback beta phase. The game was released much too early because of an exhausted budget. Though not that bad, it got very negative critics. The development studio blowed up.

I was able to build a couple of maps using the provided assets and Unity free version during the beta phase. The Unity editor is powerful, however I hadn't  a chance to experiment scripts, spawning, conversations ... Pillar of Eternity and Wasteland 2 are samples of Unity made games.

If I remember correctly you need Unity Pro to add new assets to a project package. If they are free you can use them in a Unity project. As I know zylch about 3D modeling, I can't give you info about the assets formats and all that stuff. I can't tell either if free Unity assets can be used out of Unity.

Yes, I use Unity, but I won't be at my main computer for a couple of days to check.  Which experience are you asking about?  Just downloading assets for it from the store?  When you do it, it happens from directly inside Unity, and you can import the assets into a project, at which point they appear in a folder where you save the project.  I haven't looked into any export functions that it may have.

Claudius: I don't use Unity Pro, but I can import assets into my project packages.

Okay thanks. It sounds like one could potentially export the assets for use in NWN2, but it is unclear whether the license allows that.

@Tchos : good to know. The JA Flashback devs talked about a limitation of the free version regarding the assets, but I dont remember exactly what.

As of Unity 5.. you can import now regardless if you use pro or not.

Apparently there's a way to export Unity assets as OBJ files, which would mean they could be imported into NWN2. (Assuming the textures can also be exported.)
