Greetings all I have been looking around trying to find a answer to this question so I came here to hopefully get it answered. About me real fast I have DA 1 the complete version years ago and I beat the main story and loved it then when DA 2 was around I bought it but for some reason never played it, I got the complete version of DA 3 and I really want to play it but I want to beat DA 1 and DA 2 to catch up to what happened. Now I want to know since I didn't get a straight answer, do I need to play the DA 2 dlc for their story for DA3? I know DA2 isn't popular and I know you answer a quiz for what you did in 1 and 2 for 3, but I still like to know if I should get all of it.

Yes. Some characters and plot points in some DA2 DLC become VERY important in DAI.

EDIT: That said, you don't necessarily have to buy it or play it. If you want, you can just look up a walkthrough of Let's Play of them, or read a detailed synopsis of the story and characters. Because in the end, it's just good to know what happens in the DA2 DLCs so it'll have greater emotional impact when they come up again in DAI.

The Legacy dlc doesn't have to be completed, though I would suggest playing it. Its a good dlc and it helps understand some of the dialogue that is heard in DAI from Hawke and Varric.

Legacy is certainly significant to the plot of DAI, and in my opinion it's also the best part of DA2. So if you have a few spare dollars, I would certainly suggest playing it! Bring Varric and your surviving sibling.

Your DAI PC isn't supposed to know anything more about what happened in Legacy than he'll hear from other characters. So not playing Legacy before DAI isn't a big deal.

I'd say it's pretty important.

Actually, that's a really good point. Prerelease some jerk shared the information about the big bad, so the impact of the moment was lost. I think not playing Legacy would make Inquisitions villain a great deal more interesting.

Sebastian and Tallis are mentioned in war table missions. There are a few optional mentions through the game (like Varric retelling Duke Prosper's "fall from grace"), Legacy obviously has significant plot elements that carry over to DA:I.

If you don't have the money to spare, no problem. Just watch some Youtube Walkthroughs and you will get the gist of what happens. Then just say what you would do in the Keep and call it a day.

Sidenote: You can also opt to say that you did not do some DLC for strategic reasons. For example: if you really like Anders then maybe don't recruit Sebastien Vael.

Frankly, even though Legacy is important I believe that watching it on Youtube will suffice for your purposes.

As AlanC9 pointed out, the HoA wasn't anywhere near, much less involved with, the events of DAO or DA2.

Having played any of the predecessors (base games or DLC) enhances the DAI player's understanding of what's going on, and can add to the humour (mostly, occasionally sadness) of some of the dialogue... for that player  But it does nothing for the Inquisitor's story.  No need to even watch the "Let's Plays" or read spoilers, except for the metagame aspects.

In my opinion some of the story elements of DAI won't have the dramatic impact for you if you haven't played Legacy.  You'll understand a major character far better and it will make the DAI experience more meaningful.  There'll be more 'omg I totally get that' moments that would go over your head completely if you don't know Legacy well.

MoTA can be missed as can Sebastian Vael.  They're not essential.

Also, playing Legacy near the end of Act 2 of DA2 makes DA2 a much better game.  Take your sibling with you and you'll get great dialogue and it's a welcome new area to explore.  DA2 without Legacy would be a much lesser experience.

I have DA2, but not Legacy. I do feel as if I'm missing out by not having played the backstory myself.  I have read up on it and watched some video, but I plan on getting the DLC in the near future. I started a new DA2 last week but haven't gone back to it yet. I would prefer to wait until I've added the DLC.

Unless you are waiting for Sebastian, you don't really have a need to wait for the DLC until Act 3. While you can play the add-on DLCs in any Act, I personally feel they work best in Act 3. And not just because of the thinness of that Act, but who Hawke is at that point.

As a suggestion, I would recommend having the Grey Warden sibling for Legacy.

I would say it's important but youtubing it will suffice. It's better in fact, there's no way I'd want to give them more money to support THAT game!

Unless you're one of those unfathomable creatures that loved that game of course, in which case support away.
