Because it's a role playing game. They do it to play a role
I think it is something else

Half my playthroughs in DAO was as a male the other halfas a female
DA2 all playthroughs were as female. Like Jo Wyatt's voice. I tried a playthrough as male Hawke, but after a short time I stopped. Didn't like the voice
DAI. I like femquisitor because of AWR. I like her voice. I did one playthrough using the other female voice. It wasn't bad. I did one playthrough as a male, but that was to romance Cassandra

I haven't noticed an 'unusual' number of guys rolling lady characters.

I can't play my Warden as a woman. I prefer playing that game with a male character.
It's not really fair to assume they play it as a female because "dat ass". For the vast majority, it's so they can role play. I've never met any guy who does it because "women are sexy" or "LESBIANS". And none of my friends or family would hide that fact if they did feel that way.

I'm not sure if they "mostly" play with female characters. I mean, is there any statistic on that sort of thing?
As for playing with female characters, my friends' explanations tend to vary from
- if I'm staring at a character's butt for several hours, it'd better be a pretty one,
- girls are overall cuter,
- playing a guy is boring,
- it's a roleplaying game and I like roleplaying different characters/something other than myself,
- it's a different and new perspective and/or I generally find female characters more interesting,
- I want to try playing through this game with all kinds of classes, choices and decisions, and that includes playing a female character,
- I prefer the voice acting (or some other aspect of the game),
- I dunno, I just do,
in no particular order.
Some of my friends prefer playing female characters, others decide on a whim, some don't really feel quite comfortable with it. I'm not sure we can make such a generalising statement in the first place. Not without any data to back it up.

Because Dat Ass. When you are going to spend your time looking at a pixel person, might as make them as our eye-candy.

Why do you "guys" play mostly with a female character in dragon age ? Is it because we have beautiful butts where you can look at. Or is it because we women run more gracefully then man because the man look really ridiculous when they run in this game. Or is it something else ?
Not only in Dragon Age. I mostly play females because I like to play what I'm not. I like to consider what my player would decide, who she would romance.

Do they? I got the impression most guys preferred to be guys. ![]()
I'm female and I admit I'll always play a girl if I can, but if I'm after a certain romance then I'm happy to switch it up. Surely most of us will choose our sex determined on who's pants we wanna get into right?
Before ME I really disliked being a guy, but my male Sheps have taught me that I can be just as invested in the story and still enjoy it, so really it's not a big deal. After all I was a guy in Deus Ex 1 + 3, Bioshock 1, 2 + 3 etc, and I still enjoyed them. Surely lots of men have played Tomb Raider and had a great time, so it really shouldn't matter at all.
However if I could be a girl and romance Cassandra, that would SO be happening right now.

The main reason for me is to get a more complete outlook on the game.
For example in Origins, it was interesting to see the different dialogue changes due to the gender difference.
Sometimes it's the voice acting like in Dragon Age 2, I personally prefer Jo Wyatt voice as Hawke.
Or it something to do when you want to do a completely opposite to your first fun. Normally my first playthrough is "what would I do in this situation?" and the second playthrough is a chance to do a completely opposite run with a female character.
At no point, have I created a female protagonist just to stare at her behind
.
an attractive male character maybe ![]()

What about women who play male characters, OP?
I think the results are going to be a bit skewed in this case because of the historical lack of options. The same thing would apply to gay players who make a character of the opposite gender so they can romance the NPC of their preferred gender -- a gay guy playing a woman to romance a man -- because they don't have a choice otherwise. I've seen many female players say that they play women because it's not always an option for them, whereas that is not a problem for the male player. I've also seen female players say that they play as men because that is what they have always played as since they started playing games. An individual player's personal history with the gaming medium is just as important a consideration as their PC gender preference.
For myself, it's primarily about aesthetics and what I can relate to. I was never able to create a decent looking guy that I could relate to in DAO, so I stuck with female characters. While my canon character for DA2 is the femHawke, I did create a maleHawke that I liked quite a bit and played a couple of times; the voice acting and appearance of both Hawkes made all the difference for me. For DAI, I started out with my typical canon play, a female human mage. I'm not that crazy about their female voice options, I don't think they're bad, just not to my auditory taste. Then I met Dorian and made a guy just to romance him. But even though I made the character for that purpose, I really fell in love with the PC I created, the British VA's voice work, the way I made him look, the personality and backstory I developed for him, and so on, and have never looked back. My male human SnS Inquisitor is my canon, which came as a complete surprise to me as it was such a departure from my typical canon.
On other, non-RP games, like World of Warcraft, it is ALL about aesthetics for me. I really dislike the way all of the male models look across all of the different races (13 total!), so I just go with female for everything.

I play both but will play more male characters. It gives me a chance to experience a different perspective from the one I have in real life (female). I also play non-human characters the majority of the time when given the choice.

Oh, of course. I guess I was just working on the assumption that we were talking about Bioware RPGs where choosing your PC's sex has always (I think the results are going to be a bit skewed in this case because of the historical lack of options. Same. I mostly base my decision on 1) which voice I prefer, 2) what romance options are available, and 3) the character concept I want to play and whether that would be affected by their gender.
