tesla21,My question would be how many men would admit they use female characters? Very few I know of. I would never use a female in a game of D&D where all the players lean toward the macho man character side.

Judging by by this thread and plenty of others I've seen, quite a few.

Why? Do what you want and don't worry about what other people think. You're not playing for them.

Begs the question what rounds you've been playing in the pen and paper times. We were a mixed group. Males and females and nobody played it in a machismo way.

I never understood it myself.

I'm a guy, so I sympathise with and understand a male characters emotions/point of view more -------- so I always play as a male, it helps me get into the story waaaay more.

This could be due to the fact that I always play rpgs as if I was the MC e.g. what would I do/choose/say in this situation so I naturally choose the gender that I am.

For me it's the polar opposite. I feel much more immersed when I play someone I ain't. I got bored with all the guys I had to play when RPGs and adventures were still monogender with fixed heroes and jumped at the opportunity to have a different challenge.

Vertigomez and Abaris ,Simply put back in the early 80s a male didn't play a female or as far as that goes a gay character.. It was  taboo and not as acceptable as it is today. Seldom did you see a female playing D&D in fact there was no women in our group nor (ahem) would we welcome them since we enjoy cutting wind, cussing and telling off color jokes..

A group of friends enter a friends basement and had a go at D&D. Some times we had CCR,The Eagles,The Beatles among other groups playing softly in the background.  A 36 hour marathon wasn't unusual.

Of course all good times must end and for me it was when I bought a SNE and Final Fantasy 1.

Well, we played it in the mid to late 80ies, so I most certainly don't subscribe to your view. Females and one gay guy were part of our group meeting weekly. And try as I might, I don't remember anyone playing the macho.

Did you just assume women don't do these things? :bandit:

Anyway, my point was that if you enjoy something, you should ignore the taboo because it's stupid.

Im a short brown guy with black hair and a trimmed beard - so I always end up playing a short brown guy with black hair and a trimmed beard  XD

unless I am playing an elf - but I can't stand playing as elf anymore, Bioware fucked them up - they look like twigs with hair.

I suppose it will depend on where one lived back then.. Even at the D&D meets the only women I saw was the counter workers at the food area or wives and sweeties watching the game.

It doesn't depend on where, it does depend on how your circle was made up. And who's to say, women take issue with cussing? I never made that kind of experience. Farting, well yes, many people take issue. Not because my tender feelings get hurt, but because I don't particularly appreciate smelling the contents of bowels.

No preference here... why should playing as a female if you're male or vice versa in a rpg have some deep meaning to it?

Folks do this in Tekken and other fighting games all the time, and nobody bats an eye.

Abaris, Where I was living was a rough and tumble way of life-the coal fields of W.Va even as a dump truck driver. A man even in the 80s was well behave toward women it was the nature of the beast.  Back then you disrespected a decent woman and more then likely you made a trip to fist city with her family or friends--all of them. The bar room rosies was as tough as the men.

That's more down to a paternalistic society than to the nature of women. If they're held on a short leash, they won't fly their true colors. Women can hold their own, as far as my own experience goes. Unless there are men keeping them down by being overprotective or the know thy place sort.

I think Bioware games were the first games I actually created a woman character in and with each Bioware game i play at least once as a woman character. In DA:I I have 2 female Inquisitor's that have finished the game and 4 male. I also have 3 more female Inquisitor's I plan to play and 2 or 3 more male inquisitor's. In DA:O the most powerful play through for me was with a female human romancing Alistair and he got all super awesome and noble at the end and just went and sacrificed himself. It was probably one of my favorite moments in gaming.

I definitely have to experience the voice acting performance from each actor as well.

Bioware makes their women characters just as awesome or more awesome than the men and it is really satisfying to play the story from so many different perspectives. Nobody does it like Bioware, not even close.

Dunno which 80's that was. My college PnP group often had males playing female characters. And there were several female players in my high school. I suppose it depends on where you were.

Oh, how bromantic! :P

Anyway, I'm "one of those guys" who often play female characters in these games. And I've never had any trouble playing as one in table-top RPG as well, if it suited the setting. It all comes down to how well written the role is, and Bioware has always delivered in that aspect.

Besides, if 68% of the inquisitors created are male, I think the OP assumption is just false, based on how I believe the general male - female player ratio is (a lot of assumptions, I know).

I like to play both genders and I'm female. That said, if I make a male inquisitor, I do delight in making him as hot as possible.

I'd say it's the opposite

People who play as characters of a different gender to themself are sane enough to recognise that they and the characters are not the same person and self assured enough of their gender and sexuality to not be afraid of catching "gayness" or a similar "disease" from playing a game.

I play as both genders and I'm a guy, though I've been leaning more towards making female characters over male characters.  It's mainly because I've played so many games where you can only play as a male character that, frankly, it feels tedious to play as a male when I have the option not to.

Doesn't hurt that female characters tend to have better quality romances (imo) in BW games.

I was just about to say that. Imagine somebody's masculinity being that fragile. That's so sad.

I understand having a preference. But not this condescending BS.

I think it's mostly up to how people want to play their games. Do they want to play with self-insert character who is just like them in IRL or do they want to make character who is not them. I always do latter with RPG's, I decide on backstory, personality and things like that before playing and try to stay with those, I find it most fun to play to me. And I'm girl myself, but I play pretty much 50/50 female and male characters. I don't find it harder to relate to my male than my female characters either.
