I think it's mostly up to how people want to play their games. Do they want to play with self-insert character who is just like them in IRL or do they want to make character who is not them. I always do latter with RPG's, I decide on backstory, personality and things like that before playing and try to stay with those, I find it most fun to play to me. And I'm girl myself, but I play pretty much 50/50 female and male characters. I don't find it harder to relate to my male than my female characters either.

Im the opposite, I always play as myself in games, I find it so much more fun lol.

Depending on the romance - or the personal history.

In DA Origins I played a female urban elf since the personal story was fantastic; a downtrodden patronised elvish lass witnessing her best friend being outraged by an arrogant human noble.

In DA 2 I preferred to play a man since you could romance Anders and Isabela,

In DAI my two preferrred romances are with Solas (and you need a female dalish character) or with Dorian (in which case you need a male character).

i play a male inquisitor, i don't play game to look butts, and a female character does not move more gracefully than a male character

P.s. Maybe i am totally wrong about this.

Thanks. Interesting to compare this to ME statistics. There are a lot more male Shepards.

I think it's because the whole ''badass soldier'' role that Shepard inevitably plays is more closely associated with men. Even today men outnumber women in any armed forces by a very significant margin.

Whereas Dragon Age allows for a wider variety of roles and archetypes, including those that are more ''friendly'' to women such as rogues or mages. I find that fantasy in general is more partial to female fighters than SF or modern stories.

I find that odd, myself, since one of the main stereotypical reasons for women not being "suited" to combat is strength, and yet, strength is less important now (and especially in scifi) that it would be in fantasy, generally speaking.

As for men outnumbering women in the armed forces, I wouldn't really say "even today" like it means much :P Women are just starting to be allowed in all categories of militaries. I'd be interested to see the numbers in 50 years, 100... It's possible it won't even out, of course, but we'll see.

For me its all down to the voice actor/Setting and Story and head canon. The only female i have so far in the Dragon Age universe is Hawke. Her Sarcastic voice hit it for me, It also seemed more of a story fitted thing for a female character and having had a male in Origins, my head canon needed a female lead.

Why do you "guys" play mostly with a female character in dragon age ? Is it because we have beautiful butts where you can look at. Or is it because we women run more gracefully then man because the man look really ridiculous when they run in this game. Or is it something else ?

So why "guys" why do you play mostly with a female character ?

P.s. Maybe i am totally wrong about this but i just get the feeling and what i am reading here in this forum that i am not entirely wrong about what i am writing here.

interesting topic. i play as a female quite often but not as many times as male.
In many games if i have the choice i may play only as a female, like bloodborne.
Its quite interesting to play and gives me another perspective.
When i go female i do not consider same sex romance at all. I really enjoyed Garrus and Cullen romance!

If you play a mage or a rogue, strength isn't the problem. I always tend to play one of those two classes, since fighters are often boring in fantasy games, as far as gameplay is concerned.

Also I would like to see the statistics for ME. I guess it's not an official poll but some data based on multiplayer or players offering their opinion on the web. I never played ME online, since horde modes, which this game offers, are mostly filled with people I wouldn't want to meet IRL. But going by the abundance of Femshep threads on the web, playing females doesn't seem to be unpopular.

These were the stats Bioware published after ME3: http://www.pcgamer.c...3-infographic/. As you can see, those femshep lovers (and that includes me :)) were more vocal than numerous, it seems ;).

But how would they know, other than going by their multiplayer server records or information the players offered them at some web poll?

I don't doubt there are more brosheps, since the game is basically a shooter with roleplaying elements, but it doesn't seem to be conclusive data.

Because of the voice acting. I tried all 4 and the one that stuck was the elf with Alix Wilton Regan's voice. The others didn't quite do it for me although I can acknowledge they did a competent, professional job. It's a shame because initially I wanted a male human noble to romance Cassandra.  When you create a character, even if in theory the character is what you wanted, once you see it you may feel like hmm this isn't really working.

I'd say the sex factor is incidental and a good match between the character and the voice work is what makes the difference.

The stats are based on all players that were connected to the HQ while playing I believe, so it's fairly accurate. Not just those actually doing MP.

Let's see, to date for me for DAI: HF (canon), EM, EF, HF, QM, DF

HF = Human Female, EM = Elf Male, etc.

For me, it's mostly about content. If the only way to get the Solas romance content is to play an elf female, that's what I do. The second HF was an exception, I needed a KE quickly to do a Dragon's Bane achievement run and the default female looked better to me than the default male, so that's what I went with.

I'll probably do a run as QF for the Sera romance, since I've heard that has slightly altered dialog that's worth experiencing.

I'd say it's the opposite
People who play as characters of a different gender to themself are sane enough to recognise that they and the characters are not the same person and self assured enough of their gender and sexuality to not be afraid of catching "gayness" or a similar "disease" from playing a game.

You may have a point there. My husband always plays as a female when he plays fantasy RPGs (TES, DA), whereas in non-fantasy settings, or darker settings, he will always play as a male (Fallout, ME, Bloodborne etc.).

Of course, each person will probably have his own reason for choosing to play as whichever gender, but archetypes probably have a lot to do with it.

The romance didn’t feel right because of her hair?? Are you kidding?
So straight women should have long hair and leave the short styles for the lesbians I suppose?  <_<

I am with you on the whole "women can have whatever hairstyle and hair length that they want" thing, but from my observation and my experience, women always look better with longer hair as opposed to having a shorter hair.

What I mean is that the same woman, say Woman X, will always look better with her hair long than her hair short. To this day, I have never met a woman whose short hair looked better than her long hair. Even the actresses and the supermodels look better with long hair compared to having short hair. Sure, some women can rock the short hair look but I guarantee you that they will look better with long hair. At least that's my take on it.

Having said that, I get why women would want to have a short hair. I live in Malaysia and its hot so having short hair is nice and the maintenance is far lower as well.

As for characters, I know I joked about playing female characters because of how they look in an older post in this topic but my main characters in all games are human male, if I have the choice (Tomb Raider for example, is an exception). They are easier to identify with since I am a human male myself. I do play female characters but they are not my canon.

I'm forever disappointed in the lack of the proper accent for the elf though. I can understand why it was limited to just the two, but still.

Speak for yourself. It's your observation based on your preferences. It's certainly not an experience, other than a subjective one.

Well, this is evidence that Bayonet Hipshot prefers longer hair on women.

I don't see what else it's evidence for.

I almost always play as a male. It's easier for me to relate to my own gender, even if the man in question is, for example, a krogan. Very difficult for me to play as a female in a custom character RPG where you make your own choices. But if it's a set protagonist like Lara Croft of Tomb Raider or Jill Valentine of Resident Evil which has a premade female, it's different.

That said, I do have a FemShep and a couple of female Hawkes.

Okay abaris and AlanC9, find me a a woman who looks better with short hair than long hair.  A few photographs if you will.

Go ahead, I can wait.

I can wait all day because even if you show me a cute woman with a really nice pixie bob hair, she will look better with longer hair.

There is even an evolutionary and biological reason for why majority of men prefer long haired women over short haired women :- http://www.sciencedi...022103100914501

So yes, by all means, keep deluding yourselves with claims of preferences.

So you cite a study about preferences and say this isn't about preferences? That makes zero sense.
