Oh, of course. I guess I was just working on the assumption that we were talking about Bioware RPGs where choosing your PC's sex has always (except Planescape: Torment? not biowhar) been an option. So, not talking about female players who are running around as Geralt because they have no choice, but female players who prefer Femquisitor/Inquisidude for whatever reason.

By that I meant that "Because I can't play as my own [female] gender in most games, I will play as it when I have the opportunity." That opportunity crops up in the DA games. So in that case, the overall lack of gender selection in most games is having an influence on gender choice in Dragon Age.

I feel I must add that I'm just going on what other female players have said. I play very few games, so I'm not very familiar with the various options, or lack thereof, in all of the games out there.

I get it. I've seen that sentiment expressed too, and it's certainly justified.

I just can't relate to it 'cause I'm Bioware trash and have always been able to choose.

For what it's worth, across the whole series I've got a 50/50 split, but I've got more male Wardens and more female Hawkes and Inquisitors.

(Before DA2 came out, I had six world states and an even split. Then it turned out that I prefer Jo Wyatt's take on Hawke and female Inquisitors get more romance options, so when I made my extra world states I went with male Warden then female Hawkes and/or Inquisitors.)

Do they?   I got the impression most guys preferred to be guys.

I'm female and I admit I'll always play a girl if I can, but if I'm after a certain romance then I'm happy to switch it up.  Surely most of us will choose our sex determined on who's pants we wanna get into right?

Before ME I really disliked being a guy, but my male Sheps have taught me that I can be just as invested in the story and still enjoy it, so really it's not a big deal.  After all I was a guy in Deus Ex 1 + 3, Bioshock 1, 2 + 3 etc, and I still enjoyed them.  Surely lots of men have played Tomb Raider and had a great time, so it really shouldn't matter at all.

However if I could be a girl and romance Cassandra, that would SO be happening right now.

Well according to the statistics it is the other way around.    ;)

Me to if i can i play as a female to.

Yes true in lots of games you cannot choose who you want to be in those games you play as a man.

Me to.

I used to think that the majority of male gamers stick to playing as guys. But if they're playing as girls, then there are probably a lot of reasons for why. And this is excluding them doing so for what OP suggests.

I see no reason to think most men do play as female inquisitors

That's me. I've played games since I was little and I've played so many where I had no choice (or no decent choice), so now I'm super clingy to actually having that sort of option. It's funny because I never play my female characters as myself. Yet I always subconsciously prioritise it in a way that I don't even think about it and head right for the female option first when I can like it's the most given thing ever. And I have a great time with it in BW games.

I don't know if that's the experience for everybody else, but I can confirm your theory in my particular case.

All that said, I play and roleplay male characters and enjoy it, as well. It's just nice not having to in some games. BW makes me pretty happy in that regard.

What about women who play male characters, OP?

Well in a lot of games we don't have a choice who we want to be. We then play as a man what ArcadiaGrey said in her thread and another one The Witcher in those games we cannot choose a female character. Because if that was an option i would most definitely choose a female character.

Well i do it to get a different perspective and the voice acting tends to be better, but that is just my preference. It is Interesting to play something i am not in real life. Whether that be a woman, Dwarf, Elf, Qunari etc. Also some romances can sway me to play the opposite sex. I don't project myself onto the character, i am playing a character.

EDIT - Forgot the best reason to play female in DA:I - Sera romance!

Hmm, I thought about this and I don't really care about which gender I play.

I mostly just look who I want to romance and/or what chara I want to play.

I have two DAO PTs so far, one female, one male. I have planned 5 more DAO PTs. Out of those 5 planned Wardens, one is female, and four are male.

One for each Origin, with two for the Cousland origin, so I can marry Alistair.

In DA2 I have two fem!Hawke's so far and I'll probably stay with fem!Hawke. Not because I wouldn't play male!Hawke, but because they reused the german VA of DAO!Zevran for male!Hawke. And while he uses a different tone in his voice as male!Hawke, it just feels weird to hear Zevran's voice.

As for DAI, I just go with who I want to romance:

fem!Adaar romanced Josie

male!Lavellan romanced Cassandra

fem!Lavellan romanced Solas

male!Cadash for a fast runthrough to get two Achievements

male!Trevelyan romances Dorian

planned:

fem!Lavellan will romance Cullen

fem!Lavellan will romance Sera

fem!Trevelyan will romance Blackwall

After I romanced everyone (sans Bull) I'll just play who I'm in the mood in.

I'm sort of female (my gender is a long vocab lesson) and I agree with what you're saying. I've been gaming since I was a kid so I've spent a lot of time playing as men and not being able to choose. So if that choice is there I'm sure as hell gonna take it.

Here comes the paradox reply.

Since most of "Inquisition's" relationships are alternative, I get a normal hetrosexual experience by playing a lesbian female. I know. I know. I can see the irony behind my playing style. When it comes to other RPGs, I choose a mix bag of gender types. "Dragon Age" used to have a nice pallet of hetrosexual choices. Since there are not enough choices, I see myself moving onto another franchise. While I do support the gay and lesbian movement, I prefer to playing strong male characters.

On the flip side, I play every gender type from a male perspective. Even though I may play a female character, I automatically chase after the babe in the room.

Finally, I don't take video game romances seriously. I don't invest allot of effort into building fake relationships. "Dragon Age: Origins" hit the right notes, for its romance stories settled into the background. When people take artificial relationships too seriously, I think that is a sign of an unhealthy lifestyle. BioWare should push the romances into the background, so they can develop a stronger world story. "Dragon Age" is becoming too much of a drama. I want to get back to mythological and dark-fantasy storytelling. BioWare's push for realism and drama has made the franchise boring. In order to get to where we are now, BioWare ended up ditching a mess of mythology.

I play both but will play more male characters. It gives me a chance to experience a different perspective from the one I have in real life (female). I also play non-human characters the majority of the time when given the choice.

Nah, sorry but in my case you're...

;)  Anyway, like some of the others up there I roleplay and some stories work better with a female lead others with a male. :D

I don't think we do play mostly with female characters. Perhaps we play a female character as a secondary or third or fourth character just to test out other things, but I think us guys mostly play as male characters.

My Hero is male, but I have two female characters as alts.

My Inquisitor is male, and I recreated two of my male Heroes in Inquisition, and I created a female Levellan. I also made a young Cassandra.

The only canon female I have is the default Hawke. This is because Hawke isn't our character. She is BioWare's, and I believe that a rogue female archer Hawke fits the DA2 storyline best. A female Hawke is easier to sympathize with, I think. And she's just more endearing. Male Hawke just comes off as a loser to me.

I think it's nice that people can get themselves to play as the opposite sex. Me personally, I can't get myself to it because I see my character somewhat as myself and it feels weird playing as a guy. Games like The Witcher and Assassin's Creed I love playing even though they're the opposite sex but I don't see them as quite the role playing game as bioware games are, so maybe that's why I don't mind xD

People play the game as they want to play it. Just because you feel that something is rewarding that doesn't mean other players will as well. If someone wants to make a perfect amalgamation of themselves so they can imagine themselves casting magic, fighting dragons, having a sappy/angsty/torrid/sexy romance with some NPC, and saving the world, most of which we cannot do in the real world, then that is their prerogative to enjoy the game in that way. The different options are there if they want to take them. That is what is rewarding for those people.

I tend to play the same character, usually with the same choices, over and over again because that is what I like to do and have no interest in trying something different. If I am going to devote 150 hours to a play, it damn well better be something I know I will enjoy. I know the choices are there for me if I want to experience them, and that is enough.

The one question that I've been prompted to ask by my experiences on BSN more than any other is: Why do people care so much about others playing a game differently than they do?

Geek culture used to be about exploring what was in a game, playing it how you like, and seeing if you could collectively find all the little details the developers added. Nowadays, it's more about judging people for not playing the game "the correct way that I play."

I don't see the point of including choices and then making an issue out of people actually making those choices.

Well, my husband definitely prefers to play as a female if given a choice. And doesn't hide that the reason is exactly "if I have to stare at a character for many hours it'd better be a pretty girl".))

I myself tend to play both genders, in some games I prefer male characters more, in some - females. I prefer female Warden and Hawke, male Bhaalspawn and Hero of Neverwinter and my Inquisitors are split 50/50. Reasons are different: voice actor, ability to create nice looking character, specific romance or just overall feel that this gender fit my idea of that particular hero better. I never do self-inserts.

I agree completely.

That said, the other end of that are people who actually think that there is an objectively "best" option, even with something as subjective as an RPG. There are several threads in the back pages of this forum from players asking what the "best" class, race, romance, or such-and-such choice is, and there is never any shortage of players willing to throw their 2 copper out there for what they consider to be the best.

I always wonder about this. How much of oneself has to carry over for it to be a self-insert? For example, I can never bring myself to make evil choices, or a-hole choices, and most of my characters have a similar value and moral system as I do in real life. I will base their decisions around role-play and a particular backstory, but there are still those personal elements.
