The stereotype of men playing as women so they don't have to stare at a man's butt for the entirety of the playthrough is actually way more common in MMOs than in singleplayer RPG games.

In MMO's it's all about eye-candy, so a lot of heterosexual (and bisexual??) men will pick female characters. In a singleplayer game, they're most likely going to have to identify as or with the character they're playing as, it's a lot less about eye-candy. Many people will also create a self-insert version of themselves, this obviously means that their in-game gender matches up with their IRL gender.

I'm not saying this is true for every single gamer out there - I'm not trying to generalize, keep that in mind.

As for me; I always prefer playing as a female character if I get the option. However I'm totally fine with playing as a male character as well and if possible I'll create multiple characters and eventually get a 50/50 even split.

I found this link that has some stats

Appreciate the link, interesting info. Still, it doesn't provide any info regarding the topic, which is male gamers playing female toons.

I've never understood the "nice ass" reason for playing the opposite sex. I don't stare at my character's ass a whole lot when I'm playing a game, there are usually other things on the screen that require my attention, like the environment or combat, etc.

I don't, all my characters in my main keep world are male.

I have some female characters in my other world states, but thats only to keep things varied when I realised "damn, every single hero I made is a guy so far!"

That's all well and good, and somewhat interesting, but like any statistics or metrics involving these games, it doesn't have ANY corollary information about the player making those choices, and also can't tell us the reason any given player makes a choice. This applies to all of the data collection that Bioware takes.

If anything, the 32% number would seem to suggest that a good chunk, or even most, of male players are NOT playing female, and that there are a decent amount of female players that are playing males.

Heh "men".

Anyway, I prefer female protagonists, to the point where I actively avoid the male option whenever possible, save for maybe one or two to get content not available otherwise or to make a disposable character to make the goofiest choices, like my murder elf in DAO or failShep, who I reserve strictly for Sheploo. I guess it's partly because male protags are everywhere as it is so I just do something different, but it's also because I prefer the overall aesthetic and have always had a thing for female main characters in adventure stories. Anyway, it doesn't matter, because I'm pretty sure the claim made in the OP is wrong.

Or very few women playing with DA.

Its a role playing game, therefore you play a role that isn't you. I generally don't play a human or male because that is what I am that is for an RPG that has non-human races.

I freely admit that I don't have stats to back this up, but I thought it was a well known thing that Dragon Age has a high female playerbase.

It always drives me nuts when those statistics come out, because they're like, "80% of players chose a male character. Therefore 80% of players are male!"

Noo~oooo, that's not how it works.

Yes, i know. I do not wanted to refute you. That's why it was strange for me the small number of female characters. Maybe I was not clear enough, sorry. Probably much more women playing with male characters than vice versa, as you said.

Why do you "guys" play mostly with a female character in dragon age ? Is it because we have beautiful butts where you can look at. Or is it because we women run more gracefully then man because the man look really ridiculous when they run in this game. Or is it something else ?

So why "guys" why do you play mostly with a female character ?

P.s. Maybe i am totally wrong about this but i just get the feeling and what i am reading here in this forum that i am not entirely wrong about what i am writing here.

If I were a guy, the implications of this question would get under my skin.

As it is, it is just seems silly. The actual statistics debunk everything your theory is built on. At least generally, way more players pick a male character. As for male players who do play as female...you can't possibly actually think there's an all encompassing explanation? The reasons aren't just going to change from player to player, they're going to change from game to game. A player might choose to create a character of a different gender than their own because they like the voice actor, the romance options involved, or even just exploring the different dialogue involved. That's usually why I get around to making male characters after I've played through as female.

In any case, thank the Maker for male players who do play female characters. The more it happens, the more likely rpg games are to keep developing female protagonists. In ten years, we might see that not only is providing a female option utterly routine in RPGs, but that you almost never see it treated as a primarily cosmetic distinction, wherein everyone still reacts to you as though you're male--such as in Dragon's Dogma.

I'd argue that anyone who likes playing female characters themselves should consider encouraging as many people as they can to do the same.

I have my doubts. What if you play several characters? Do they only count the first one? Do they count those five minutes into gameplay before you realize how uggo your PC is and start over? Is it based on your first complete playthrough?

Yeah, I find it a bit confusing in some ways, but understandable in others. When you're observing the scenery or tunnel-visioned in combat, it won't apply. But if you're jogging through familiar terrain for ages, it can be more noticeable for a few reasons:

1. It's in the middle of your screen

2. When they make the character's hips move so much their spine should break, your inner t-rex's movement-based vision activates :P

3. The pendulum-style swinging is hypnotic in some way, maybe?

Or very few women playing with DA.

That might be true, but my hunch is that that is largely because of casual players. I feel like most of the people who just randomly pick up Inquisition for the sake of a new game and don't really get into it are male, create a male character, and leave. The main reason I think this is because the percentage of female fans on active forums is pretty high. So it seems to me like the more passionate fans are more evenly split. Guesswork, of course.

This is why I'd be much more interested to see what percentage of Inquisitors who finished the game were male or female. Obviously, that wouldn't account for the fact that people play characters who don't match their gender (the topic of the thread), but if we assume the ratio for men making female characters is roughly even to the ratio of women making male characters, we would definitely get a more definitive answer, at any rate.

I'm not a guy, but most of the guys I know who play DA play male characters. I only know of one guy friend who prefers to play as women. Dwarf females in particular, IIRC.
